MILTON W. CODDINGTON, OF RUTHERFORD, NEW JERSEY.
CAR-COUPLING.
$PECIEICA'IION forming part of Letters Patent No. 351,964, dated November 2, 1886.
Application filed August 7, 1886.
To allwhom it may concern:
Be itknown that I, MILTON W. CODDINGTON,
of Rutherford, in the county of Bergen and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Oar-Coupler, of which the following is a full, clear, and eXact description.
My invention relates to an automatic carcoupler wherein a star-cam isused for retaining the connectinglink; and the invention consists of the construction, arrangement, and combination of parts, all as hereinafter described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in'which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of my new and improved car-coupler, showing a part of the connecting-link held in the coupler; and
Fig 2 is a front elevation of the coupler.
A represents the draw-head, formed with cavitya, and throat b, for the connecting-link B,
and formed with upwardly-projecting arm A. In the cavity a is journaled upon the pin a the star-cam O. This is formed with four arms, the rear edge of each of which is slightly curved and rounded to fit the link, while the front edge is rounded, as shown at 0 In the upwardly-projecting arm A is formed a cavity, d, in which is held the vertically-sliding pin or block D. The pin or block D is held in place in the cavity by the flanges d. The cavity d communicates with the rear portion of the cavity a, so that the lower endof the pin D reaches down into the cavity a' back of the star-cam O. A lug, d, is formed at the Serial No. 210.202. (No model.)
upper end of the pin D, for lifting the same for uncoupling the cars.
In operation the pin Dis permitted to drop into the draw-head as far as the lug d will allow. Then the cars to be coupled have simply to be backed together, whereupon the connecting-link B, entering the draw-head, will strike one of the arms of the star-cam and turn the cam one quarter, or t-hereabout, of a complete revolution. This will bring the arm above into the connecting-link, and the arm in front will have lifted the pin D and passed it, so the pin will have dropped justback of the arm that lifted it, where it occupies a position between said. arm and the backi of the draw-head, so that no matter how much out ward strain is brought upon the link Bthe cam and pin D will retain it. To uncouple the cars, the pin D has simpl to be lifted in the cavity of the projection A,
whichwill release the cam 0, so the link B can
