OTTO LOUIS SCHASTEY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO JOHN W. I AITKEN, OF SAME PLACE.
SEWING- MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 351,939, dated November 2, 1886. Application filed November 11, 1885. Serial No. 182,457. (No modeLi -T all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OTTO LOUIS SonAsrEY,
of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sewing-Machines, of which the following is a full, clear, andexact descrip tion. I
This invention relates to improvements in that class of sewingmachines sewing with a single thread and used for making a cross or binding stitch.
The object of my invention is to provide certain new and useful improvements in the sewing-machines for which United States Letters Patent No. 328,816 were issued to me on the th day of October 1885.
The invention consists in a machine of the above-described kind having its throat-plate made movable with the other parts, as will be described and set forth hereinafter, and
then pointed outin the claims,
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, formingpart of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure 1 is a sectional plan view of my improved sewing-machine. Fig. 2 is a front view of part of the same By means of cog-wheels or other suitable power-transmitting devices the sleeve I is revolved from the main shaft A,which sleeve is held loosely on the shaft B,held on the bracket 0 on the base of the machine, and the said sleeve is provided with the cam D, which acts on the sliding collar E, mounted on the main shaftito slide, and which is connected indirectly with the lower end of the lever F,having its other end connected with the needlebar guide pivoted to swing laterally,as shown in the Patent No. 328,816. The looper B is also mounted-on the end of the sliding rod J in the tubular 1113111 shaft, as set forth in the Patent No. 328,816, and which rod is also operated from the collar E.
D, and .means In the said Patent No. 328,816 I have provided athroat-plate having two slots for the needle, which throat-plate is fixed. I now provide a throat-plate, M, which is movable and provided with a single needle-slot,N-. Said throatplate,M is below the sewing-plate 0, over which the cloth is passed, and is secured to and projects from one end of the rod P, havingits other end in the socket Q, projecting from the ring R, surrounding the collar E on the main shaft, whereby the said throat-plate is reciprocated so that its position will at all times correspond with that of the needle and looper.
Having thus described I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a sewing machine, the combination, with the main shaft and the stitch forming mechanism provided with a loose collar and means for sliding said collar, of a rod connected to the said collar and a slotted throatplate on the said rod, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. In a sewing-machine, the combination, with the main shaft A and the stitch-forming mechanism provided with the sliding collar E and ring B,surrounding the collar, the shaft B, provided with the sleeve I, having the cam for operating the shaft B from the shaft A, of the rod P, connectedto the ring. R, and the throat-plate M. secured to the said rod and provided with the slot N, substantially as herein shown and described.
3. In a sewing-machine, the combination, with a stationary sewing-plate, a movable needle-bar,and a looper,0f a reciprocating rod, a throat-plate secured to said rod, and means for operating the said looper and reciprocating rod, substantially as herein shown and described.
