Be it known that 1, JOHN GRIME, a citizen of the. United States, residing at Minneapolis, in the county of Hennepin and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful My improvements are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a driving-wheel and a portion of a locomotive provided with my improvements. Fig.
2 is a side view in detail of the parts connected to the boiler and driver-axle for supporting and operating the valve-rods. Fig. 3 is a front view of the same. Figs. 4-to-9, inclusive, are de tails of parts of the. same, which will be hereinafter more fully described; and Fig. 10 illustrates my improvements in connection with a horizontal engine made to operate automatically by means of a governor and eccentric.

The brackets prevent lateral movement of the rock-shaft and parts connected to it, while permitting them to follow the up-and-down movements of the driver-axle occasioned by unevenness of the road-bed.

0 is the roller-wheel, having one end of its axle in a bearing, h, in the guide 0, and the other in abearing, i, in a casting,'k. The casting or piece K (shown in detail in Figs. 7 and 8) is secured by screws through holes k in its upper portion to the upper portion of the guide 0, and it has a central opening, k through which the rock-shaft passes.
It will be obvious that when the rock-shaft is partially rotated by shifting the usual lever in the locomotive-cab the rock-shaft and the guide c, which it carries, will be slightly ele 'vated or depressed, depending on the curvature of the way w, in which the roller ois thus made to travel, and that the changed inclination of the guide a will slightly affect the throw of the valves. If the guidec is held. on a fixed axis and its inclination is changed by turning that axis, the effect is to vary the valve-throw and make a slight inequality in the cut-ofi' and exhaust of the respective strokes; but by suitably raising or lowering the guide 0, as its inclination is changed the inequality of valvemovement referred to may be obviated. So,by providing the way w, of suitably-curved form relatively to the operations and proportions of other parts of thevalve-gear, the guide a will be raised orlowered sufficiently to compensate for any irregularity in the valve-movements which would otherwise be occasioned by a uniform cut-off and exhaust are secured for The upper surface of the change of "the guide inclination, and thus a both forward and backward throws of the valves.
In Fig. 10 is illustrated a stationary engine provided with my improvements above described, and in which the rock-shaft is operated by means of an eccentric and a governor, to render the engine automatic.

To the sliding sleeve n on the governor-spindle is connected an arm, 1), whose opposite end is attached to the face of the eccentric s, by means 7 of which the eccentric is partially rotated as the sleeve is raised or lowered by the action of the governor. To the strap t of the eccentric is attached a rod, '0, which is connected to the lever av for operating the rock-shaft.
The other parts of the mechanism are substantially the same in construction and operation as the corresponding part-s heretofore described.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
1. In combination, in a valvegear, a rockshaft, a guide and slide-block carried thereby, a shaft, an eccentric thereon connected to said slide-bloek, a standard boxed 011 said shaft, a curved way provided in said standard, and a roller-wheel in said way for raising or lowering said rockshaft, substantially as set forth.
2. In combination,in a valve-gear, a rockshaft, a guide and slide-block carried thereon, a shaft, a standard boxed thereon and provided with asliding bearing forsa-id roelcshaft, a curved way fora roller provided on said standard, and roller therein having one of its hearings in said guide and the other in a cast ing attached thereto, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. In a valve-gear, the combinatiomwith a rock-shaft carrying a guide and slide-block, of a standard boxed on the main axle, a curved way therein, and a rollerin said way operated by said rock-shaft, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
4. In a valve-gear, the combination, with a guide carried by a rock-shaft and a slide operated by an eecentricon the main shaft, of the blocksf and f',forming the way 10, and the roller-wheel 0, substantially as set forth.
5. lhe combination, with a valve-gear of substantially the construction shown and described, of a governor, an eccentric operated by said governor, and a rod connecting said eccentric with the rock-shaft levers, substan- I tially as set forth.
