WHEEL-HUB.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No.351,91d1 dated November 2,1886. Application filed September 4, 1886. Serial No. 212,711. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BONIFACE ALoYsIUs GRASBERGER, of the city of Richmond, in the county of Henrico and State of Virginia,have invented a new and useful Improvement in Wheel-Hubs for Vehicles, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to vehicle-wheelhubs adapted to give a staggering arrangement to the spokes of the wheel, and has for its object the securing of the greatest possible strength to the spokes without destroying the symmetry and beauty of the plain wooden hub; and the invention consists in a novel construction of the hub for such purposes, substantially as hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
Reference 'is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 represents a longitudinal section of the hub with the spokes in part secured therein ,Fig. 2, a transverse section thereof upon the line 00 x in Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 a detail sectional view showing a modified construct-ion'of a metal shell used in building up the hub. Fig. 4. is a side view ofaportion of the hub, with the spokes in section.
The body of the hub is composed of an outer end wooden hub-section, A, and inner end wooden hub-section, A, arranged at a distance apart and'borcd, as at b, to receive the axle. fitted within or incased by a metal shell, B B, which, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, is made in two pieces or lengths, the outer or front portion or section, B, of the shell receiving the wooden hub-section A, and the inner or back portion or section, B, receiving the other Wooden hub-section, A. t
The front shell part, B, is constructed with a central tubular extension, 0, on its inner end, between the two hub-sections A A, to provide for its insertion within an inner flange, d, on the inner end of the back shell-section,
B, as shown in Fig. 1. ,The shell-sections B B are united with each other by bolts or rivets e. The metal shell B B, however, incasing the wooden hub sections, instead of being made in two pieces, may be constructed in a single piece by dispensing with the rivets and constructing the two end parts of the shell with aninner flange, c, uniting them, as shown These wooden hub sections are l in Fig. 8. Whenever the rivets are dispensed with,the metallic shell is constructed with divisions, between every spoke. to form a separate socket for each spoke; but I claim nothing new in providing the spokes with independent sockets. In any case, however, the .metal shell is adapted to receive the two Woodenhub-sections A A within it, and to leave a space, f, intermediately of its length all around for reception of the inner ends of the staggering spokes O O, which inner end portions may either be parallel on their front {and back sides, as shown in Fig. 1, and be .held in place by the bolts or rivets e entering Jgrooves within the spokes, as in other spokefholding constructions; or, if the, shell B B is V; of a. single construction, they may be made to spread out laterally by a locking-wedge, g, as shown in Fig. 3.
To provide for the staggering disposition of the spokes, the side walls of the spoke-receiving space or recess f are made of increased thickness, or with interior projections, as at h,alternately as regards the consecutive spokes on each opposite sidewall all around said recess, so as to throw each spoke alternately to opposite sides;

;say, five pieces, one to be wedge-shaped,so as to form a key to the whole; or they can be steamed and forced into the hub.
Having thus described my invention, what I 'claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination, with the shell B, having the central tubular extension, 0, on its 'inher end, and the projections h, of 'the section B,having. the inner flange, d, having an aperture receiving the'outer end of the extension 0, and projections h, alternately with those on the shell B, and the bolts or rivets e, substantially asset forth.
2. The hub consisting of the. sections B B, connected by a tubular inner flange or extension, and intermediate alternating projections, h, forming hub-receiving recesses, and the wooden hub-sections A A, substantially as set forth.
