To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that 1, JOHN BROWN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Medford, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massa-' chusetts, have invented certain Improvements in Apparatus for Dispensing Soda-Water. of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, in which Figure l is a vertical section through the center of a sirup-can, and its gate or deliverypipe constructed in accordance with my invention and applied to a soda-water-dispensing apparatus. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section on the line x z of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a vertical section onthe line y y of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the front portion of one of the sirup-can straps, showing the socket at the center of the same. Fig. 5 is a view of the inner end of one of the strap-bolts.

My invention relates to certain improvements in apparatus for dispensing soda-water; and it consists in a novel, cheap, and convenient device for holding each sirup-can securely. in place within the casing, with its outletnozzle firmly against the opening at the inner end of the sirnp-gate or outletpipe, said device being so constructed as to admit of its being tightened or loosened from the outside of the casing of the apparatus, whereby the operation of removing and replacing the sirup-cans is greatly facilitated; and my invention also consists in certain novel combinationsof parts and details, of construction, as hereinafter set forth and specifically claimed. I

In the said drawings, A represents a portion of the front of the marble or outer casing 'of a soda-waterdispensing apparatus, and B the lining thereof.

D represents one of the sirup cans or receptacles, which is preferably composed of glass, but may be made of other suitable material, a series of these cans being arranged side by side in close proximity with the front of the apparatus in a well-known manner.

Each can D. is furnished with a gate or outlet-pipe, G, composed, preferably, of a blocktin shell or casing, a, within which is fitted a glass tube or lining, 1;, extending from the front to the rear end, at which latter point it is adapted to fit up to the neck or nozzle 0,

which forms the outlet at the lower end of the can D, and is located on the front side thereof,

the bottom of the can being rounded and inclined upward andbackward from said nozzle c to the opposite side, as seen in Figs. 1 and 3. At the inner end of the metal gate G is a projection, d, which forms a rest or support for the can D, its upper surface being curved to correspond to the shape of the bottom of the said can, as seen in Fig. 3, and it will be seen that this projection d also serves as a stop or gage to arrest the descent of the can as it is lowered down within the casing, and insures the nozzle 0 being opposite to and in the proper position to engage with the end of the outletpipe G, which is a very important considera- 7 tion, and saves much tiine in replacing the cans.

The front of the can D is inclined inward and downward from a point at any suitable distance below the top to the nozzle 0, as seen in Fig. l, by which construction the nozzle 0 is prevented from projecting beyond the vertical plane of the outermost portion of the front,as is neoessary,in order to allow the can to be drawn out without the nozzle striking, any obstructions on the inside of the ice-case,

for if the nozzle were to project beyond the plane of the outermost portion of the front it would be impossible to withdraw the can without removing the wood lining f at the top of the case, for the reason that the oppo- 7 'washer' or packing-ring, z, upon which bears and is tightly pressed the outer end of the nozzle 0 of the can D, whereby a tight joint is produced and leakage prevented.

. -H is a metal strap or holder, which encircles or extends around the sirup-can D, immediately above a shoulder, 10, 'on the same, which supports it and prevents it from dropping down out of place. This strap or holder H is provided at the center of its front side, which is of extra thickness, with an aperture or socket, k, which, when the can is placed within the casing, fits over an upwardly-turned wedge-shaped hook or projection, in, at the inner end of a bolt or rod, I, which extends through the casing A, outside of which it is provided with a screw-nut, L, and check-nut M, turning upon the threaded portion at its outer end, and consequently when the nut L is tightened up the bolt I will be drawn forward, and with it the can D, causing the latter to be clamped or confined securely in po sition, with its outlet-nozzle c firmly against the inner end of the gate or pipe G, as re quired, while when the nut L is loosened the hook in will release its hold upon the strap or holder H, and allow the can to be freely drawn out of the apparatus; and as the nut L is conveniently located, and adapted to be operated from the outside of the apparatus, the operation of removing and replacing the sirup-eans is greatly facilitated, and much trouble and inconvenience thereby avoided. A spline, n, on the bolt I, fitting a corresponding groove in the casing, prevents the hook at at the end of the bolt from being turned out of its proper position for receiving the socket of the holder H when the can is dropped down into its place within the apparatus.

q is a rubber washer to prevent leakage, and against this washer q is placed a metal washer, 1', between which and a fast collar, 8, is a spiral spring, I, which insures the inward movement of the bolt to release the can when the nut L is loosened. Upon the outer face of the check-nut M may be placed the name of the sirup contained in the can D in linetherewith, thus avoiding the expense of separate name-plates.

hat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

il. In an apparatus for dispensing soda-Wat ter, the combination, with a sirupcan and its gate or outlet, of a strap encircling said can, a bolt or rod detachably connected with said strap and extending through the outer casing of the apparatus, and one or more clampingnuts, whereby the can is securely held with its nozzle against the inner "end of the gate or outlet, substantially as herein described.

2. In an apparatus for dispensing soda-water, the combination, with the sirupean D and its gate or outlet-pipe G, of the strap or holder H, extending around said can, the bolt or rod 1', extending through the outer casing of the apparatus and connected with the holder H by a hook or projection, or, adapted to engage a socket, 7;, and a clamping not or nuts applied to the end of said bolt on the outside of the apparatus, all operating substantially in the manner and for the purpose described.

3. In an apparatus for dispensing soda-water, the combination, with a clamping-bolt, I, having the hook or projection m, of the strap or holder H, extending around the can D and provided with a socket, k, having a central vertical portion, 15, and inclined sides 12, whereby the can is centered as thehook m onters the socket, substantially as set forth.

4. In an apparatus for dispensing soda-water, the combination, with the sirup-can D and its gate or outlet-pipe G, of the strap or holder H, extending around said can and having a socket, k, the bolt I, extending through the casing of the apparatus and provided with a spline, n, and a wedge-shaped hook, m, adapted to fit said socket, the spring t, and the clamping-nut L, applied to the outer end of the bolt I, all operating substantially as and for the purpose described.

5. In an apparatus for dispensing soda-water, the combination, with a sirup-can having its outlet-nozzle 0n the front side, of the sirupgate or outlet-pipe G, provided with a rest or projection, (Z, for supporting the can with its nozzle at the proper height to engage the inner end of the outlet-pipe, substantially as set forth.
