CAR-SPRING.
SPECIFICATION forming part ot'- Letters Patent No. 351,819, dated November 2, 1886.
l Application nien october is. tesi. serial No. 145,589. (No model.)
To atZZY whom, it may concern:
Beit known that I, RICHARD VosE, a citi-- zen ofthe United States, and aresident of the city, county, and State ot' New York, have inv vented certain new and usefull Improvements in Car-Springs, of which thefollowing, taken in connection with the accompanying draw ings, is a specification.
`My invention relates tothat class 'of car-l zo it was supported and held at its base in proper' relation thereto by being tted'within the same its upper end, which was of smaller diameter, was not so supportechand hence in operation was liable to move laterally across its axes and occasion frequent breakagesof said coil. 4
The object of my inlvention is to obviate this defect and produce aspring of the class mentioned, in which the interior coil shall be ot' .30 substantially the same length ,as the exterior coil, and in which both coils shall be held from lateral movement with respect to each other at both their upper and lower ends.
To this end my invention consists in the combination, with a cylindrical spiral coil, of
a conical coil ofsubstantially the same length as the cylindrical coil, arranged within the same, and in various `other combinations and arrangements of parts, as hereinafter'described, 4o and particularly pointed out in the subjoined claims. Y
Referring to the accompanying drawings for a better understanding of my invention, A and B are the outer and inner spiral coils, respectively, the former of which is cylindrical and the latter conical in form. These coils are constructed of such dimensions that the exterior of the base of the conical coil snugly fits the interior of rthe cylindrical coil, and 5o both rest upon the base-plate E, which is provided ata `suitable distance from its center With an upwardly-projecting flange, b, that enters the interior of the base of the inner coil and is clasped thereby. Resting upon the upper end of these coils, which are of substantially the samelength, is thc top plate or cap, D, having the depending circular flange d cast or otherwise formed on its under side. This flange is of suoli diameter and thickness in crosslsection that its exterior surface snugly lits the interior of the outer coil and its interior surface the exterior ofthe upper end of the inner coil, so that when the top plate orcap is in position upon theV coils it projects down between them and holds them in proper position respecting each other. In the center-ot' both the top plate or cap, D, and the baseplate E is formed a suitable aperture, through which and the inner coil may be passed, if desired, a bolt, by which means and a nut the top plate or cap and the base-plate may be held tightly upon the coils. p
By the construction of parts thus described I am able to use .not only a conical and a cylindrical coil in connection which shall be of substantially the same length, with the former arranged within the latter, but also to provide means whereby their ends may be held in proper relation with respect to each other, without capability of lateral movement, and produce a spring which shall be simple in construction and reliable in operation.
I have shown the outer coil, A, as constructed ot' a larger Arod than the coil, B, and hence capable of withstanding a greater pressure than the latter; but it is tobe understood that I do not limit myself thereto, as it is obvious that I may reverse this order and make the interior coil of the larger rod, if I so desire. Neither do I limit myself to the particulararrangement of iianges upon the base-plate and the top plate or cap shown, as this may be modified Without departing from the spirit ot' my invention; or such iianges may be entirely omitted and other equivalent devices employed in lieu thereof and still be within the scope of my invention. 1
I am aware that it is not new to rarrange a spiral volute coil within a cylindrical coil, `the said volute coil being formed from a strip or roo yfrom strips of sheet or plate metal wound into proper shape, as shown, for instance, vin Let ters Patent No. 255,935, and such I do not claim; but,
Having fully described my invention, what I do claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, with a cylindrical Spiral coil, of a conical spiral coil of substantially the same length as said cylindrical coil, arranged within the same, whereby a spring is produced in which the conjoint action of a conical and a cylindrical spiral coil is secured during the entire range of movement of said spring, substantially as described.
2. rlhe combination7 with the outer cylindrical coil, A, the inner conical coil, B, and the base-plate E, of the top plate or cap, D, provided with a depending iiange projecting down between the upper ends of the coils, substantially as described.
The combination, with the outer cylindrical coil and the inner conical coil having its base constructed of a size to it'the interior of the cylindrical coil, of a base-plate upon which they both rest, and means' for holding the base of said conical coil from lateral movement upon the base-plate, substantially as described.
4. The combination, with the outer cylindrical coil, A, and the inner conical coil, B,
having its base constructed of a size to snugly 3o fit the interior of the cylindrical coil, of the base-plate E, provided with the upwardlyprojecting flange b, which passes up into the interior of the conical coil and prevents it from moving laterally upon the said base-plate, 35
substantially as described.
5. The combination, with the outer cylindrical coil, A, the inner conical coil, B, having its base constructed of a size to fit the interior of the cylindrical coil, and the base-plate E, 40
pending ange d,which projects down between 45 the upper ends of the outer and inner coils, substantially as described.
