W. W. RICHARDS.
WINDOW SASH.
No. 351,797. Patented Nov. 2.1886.
N. PETERS. Pheto-Limugmphm, wnsningiun, nA C.
` UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
VALTER V. RICHARDS, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
WINDOW-SASH.
SPECIFICATION forming part `of Letters Patent No@ 3511797, dated November 2, 1886. Application filed February 1l, 1886. Serial No. 191.531. (No model.)
.To all whom, it may concern.-
Be itknown that I, WALTER W. RIoHARDs, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county ot' Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented anew and useful Improvement in VVindoW-Sashes, which improvement is fully set forth in the following, specification and accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a front View, partially broken away, of a window-sash embodying my invention. Fig..2 represents avertical section in line mx, Fig. l. Fig. 3 represents a horizontal section in line y y, Fig. 1; and Fig. 4is a sectional View o f a detached portion on an enlarged scale.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures. My invention relates to improvements in windowfsashes; audit consistsjn providing the same with detachable plates and grooved castings pivotally connected, the said plates being secured to the sashes and the castings having attached thereto cords carrying weights, all as. hereinafter fully described, whereby the sash may be raised or lowered and rotated when desired.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a windowsash, and B the window-frame.
C represents grooves in the inner sides of the windowframe, anti in the same are fitted sliding pieces or castings D, to which the sashcords are attached. The window-sash is pivoted at its sides to said pieces or castings, whereby the sash may rotate thereon, so that either side of the sash may be brought into the room or presented on the outside, whereby it is accessible for pnrposcsof cleansing, glazing, Ste.
The dividing-strips E are made removable from the window-frame, and when in position are held by bolts F or other fasteningasaid bolts being fitted to the strips and adaptedito enter openings or sockets in the sill-piece.
When the strips are removed, both upper and 4 5 lower sashcs may be rotated, owing to their pivotal connection with the pieces or castings D. The strips E are *employed as weatherstrips, and close the joints between the two sashes, and` assist in guiding the sash when raised or lowered.
The castings D have grooves in the backs to receive thesash-cords, and cross-pieces a, to which the ends of said cords are held by knots formed on the cords. The sash has secured to its side plates G, in which are horizontal openings or sockets to receive the gndgeons or pivots H, which project horizontally inward from the castings, the front parts, G', of said plates .being detachable, whereby access may be had to the pivots, and the latter withdrawn from lsaid sockets, in orderto disconnect the sashes from the castings. and thus entirely remove said sashes from the window-frame.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters l. The sash A, in combination with the plates G, having detachable front parts, G, `and provided with sockets, the grooved casting D, with pivot H, and cords carrying weights, the cords being secured in the grooves of said casting D, all substantially as and for the purpose set forth- 2. The sash A, in combination with the plate'G, having detachable front piece, G', and a horizontal socket, the grooved casting D, with pivot H and cross-piece a, and aA cord having a weight attached thereto, all substantially as described.
WALTER W. RICHARDS.
