SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 351,686, dated October 26,- 1886.
Application filed August l1, 1886. Serial No. 210,657. (No model.)
.To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MAJOR A. BANeRoF'r, a citizen of the United States, residing at Blunt, in the county of Hughes and Territory of Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Printing, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to an improvement in ro the art of printing, whereby handsome and attractive designs may be produced from la form made up from ordinary movable printing material-as type, borders, brass rules, or ornaments-by allowing only such portions of the form to print as are required to bring out the design sought, without mntilating any of the material which is prevented from printing.
, The invention consists in an improved meth- 2o 0d of accomplishing the above result, which will first be described in connection with the accompanying drawings and then clearly pointed out in the claim. l
In the drawings, Figure 1 shows a tympan 2 5 bearing an impression of the form to be printed from, the dotted lines indicating portions of the tympan to be eut out, and Fig. 2 is a like view with those portions removed. Fig. 3 illustrates the manner of obtaining the off-` set on a sheet which is to be made the frisketsheet, and Fig. l represents said sheet bearing the offset. Fig. 5 illustrates this frisket-sheet cut out in accordance with the design offset from the tympan, and Fig. (5 represents said 3 5 sheet applied to` the grippers, `forming a frisket.
In carrying out my invention I first take an impression of the form on the tympan A of the press, as shown in Fig. 1, after which I 4o eut the tympan through certain portions of the impression in such manner that what remains of theimpression will form the desired design,
as illustratedin Fig. 2. I next ink the design,
preferably by one or more impressions from the form in the press, for the purpose of producing a distinct offset, as seen in' Fig. l1, by another impression ou a sheet of smooth-surfaced paper, B, large `enough to extend one and one-half inch at each end beyond the grip- 5o pers C, as seen in`Fig. 3. However, before process of adjudication, to wit:
taking this offset I make guide-marks on the paper B, and also on the tympan, as shown at m in, to enable me to replace the sheet in the same position while attaching it to the grippers to form the frisket after the offset has been cut-ont, as hereinafter described. After taking the offset, which I use as a guide inr cutting, I ent ont that portion of the frisketsheet B which bears the offset; Instead, however, of following the exact outlines of the entire offset while cutting, it is more convenient and preferable in practice to followT the contour of the offset, just clearing it, except at the points or places where the original impression on the tympan has not been changed by the cuts therein, at which points or places the line of cut is given greater clearance from the offset, as indicated by dotted lines d inV Fig. 4. Y v
In another application, led by me on the 17 th day of December, 1885, Serial No. 185,940, the following claims are now pending and in 1. The combination, with a form of type placed on the bed of a printingpress, of a frisket, the portions which overlie the part of the form from which'it is desired to take an impression being cut out, and a tympan having the portions which underlie the part of the frisket covering the part of the form not to be printed from cutout, substantially as described.
2. As an improvement in the art of printing, the method herein described of taking an impression from certain portions of an unbroken form, consisting in cutting out those parts of the frisket which overlie those parts of the form from which an vimpression is to be taken, and removing those` parts of the tympan-sheet which underlie the part of the frisket covering the part of the form notte be printed from, then applying paper to the frisket and tympan so prepared, and taking the impression, substantially as described.77
Having thus described my invention, what 95 I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, S- 'f ,g
The improved' method of printing herein described, consisting in first taking an impression of the form upon the tympan, then roo Cutting out such portions of the impression In testimony whereof Iafx my signature in 0n the tympan as are not to be printed in the presence of two witnesses. design, then taking an offset upon the frisketsheet from the design on the tympan, then 5 cutting out the offset on the flrisket-shoet, and Witnesses:
finally taking :1n impression on the sheet to FRED O. KIMVBALL, be printed, substantially :1s desmibed. THOMAS P. KANE.
