Description
(No ModeL) B. BEAUDIN.
GAR COUPLING.
No. 351,568. Patented 0013. 26', 18'86.-
UNITED STATES PATENT, ()FFICE.
ELIA BEAUDIN, OF MUSKEGON, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO JOHN WILLIAMS, 10F SAME PLACE.
CAR-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 351,568, dated October 26, 1886,
Application filed August 30, 1886; Serial No. 212,181. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known thatI, ELIA BEAUDIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Muskegon, in the county of Muskegon and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gar-Couplers; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as willenable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in car-couplers; and it consists in the combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter fully described, and then specifically pointed out in the claims.
In the annexed drawings, illustrating my invention, Figure 1 is a side elevation of two cars coupled together-with my improved coupler. Fig. 2 is atop plan View with the link on the left-hand side removed from the pins.
Like letters of reference designate like parts in both figures.
A A represent the adjacent draw-heads of twocars. These draw-heads are provided near the front edge with holes, preferably inclined, for the reception of couplingpins'a, which are fitted to enter the holes, and are held in place by pins passed through their lower ends, or-other equivalent means. The opposing faces of the upper portions of the pins a are inclined or curved, so that the link D will ride easily up the face and drop over the pin when the cars are being brought together, while the faces of the pins next the car-bodies are curved or otherwise formed to keep the link from jumping therefrom. These pins to being removable can be quickly replaced when broken or otherwise rendered ward has been relaxed. The rear portion of the draw-bar is preferably made circular, so that it may the more easily be enveloped by the spring B; and vertical plates 6 b are provided, which are perforated for the passage of the draw-bar through them, said vertical plates entering and being movable within a slot formed in the base of the car, as shown in Fig.2. The rear end of the draw-bar is provided with a pin or other suitable means outside the plate 12 to hold it in place.
Across the front of the car extends a horizontal rod, 0, which is slotted centrally to receive a link, D, that is formedwith a projection toenter said slot and be confined therein by a pin, '5, in such a manner as to be freely movablein a lateral direction, but fitted snugly to prevent vertical movement. The extremities of the rod 0 are securely fastened to the levers e e.
The coupler may be operated either from the ground or from the top of the car. In the latter case the coupling and uncoupling are accomplished by means of a bell-crank, E,
pivoted to the side of the car, its longer arm projecting above the top of the same and guided in its movements by a strap, h, and its shorter arm being pivotally connected with a link, f, which in turn is pivoted to the lever 0. The movement of these devices will obviously throw the link D over the pins a a, or remove it therefrom when desired.
The coupler is operated from below-4. 6., from the groundby means of a lever, G, formed with a handle on one end, pivoted at the other end to the lever e and slotted at j to receive a horizontal pin projecting from the car.
(Z (I represent inclined slides forlifting up the link D when they are moved toward the car-body, as shown to the left in Fig. 1.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a car-coupling, the combination,-with the draw-head A, having a pin, a, with an inclined face, of the transverse rod 0, carrying a. link, and suitable means for actuating In testimony whereof I affix my signature the rod to place the link in proper position, 111 presence of two witnesses. as herein set forth.
. his 2. The combination of draw-head A, having ELIA X BEAUDIN 5 pin a, horizontal rod (J, with link D, levers mark.
6 e, inclines d d, lcversf f, bell-crank E, and \vltnesses: slotted hand-levers G, all arranged to operate D. J. MORIARTY, as specified.
ROBERT WEIR.
