' APPARATUS FOR PAINTING SHINGLBS. 7
No. 350,987. Patented Oct. 19, 1886.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CLIFFORD I. MILLARD, OF BURLINGTON, IOlVA.
APPARATUS FOR PAINTING SHINGLES.
SPi-lCIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 350,987, dated October 19, 1886.
Application filed February 4, 1886.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CLIFFORD I. llIILLARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Burlington, in the county of Des Moines and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Apparatus for the Painting of Shingles before they are Packed, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to the improvements in apparatus for painting shingles before they are packed, in which a series of bars on a frame operate in conjunction with two screws; and the object of my invention is to furnish an apparatus by means of which a quantity of shingles can be clutched and held in a suitable manner, so that they can be dipped into paint or other suitable material and dried without having to be handled by hand. Iattain this object by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which the figure represents a top view of the apparatus.
A represents the frame of my apparatus, of which the side bars, (6 and a, are round and preferably made of iron.
B B represent a series of cross-bars upon frame A, each of which cross-bars having at b and b perforations, by means of which they loosely slide upon side bars a and a. Frame A is at 00 and mprovided with the screws S and S, respectively, by means of which the crossbars B B can be pressed toward the center of frame A.
The operation of my invention is as follows:
Serial No. 190.867. (N0 model.)
I take the shingles to be painted and arrange them between the bars B B so that their thinner end will reach about one or two inches above the bars. The rest of the shingles are below the cross-bars B B. IVhen the apparatus is thus filled with shingles, the cross-bars B B are, by means of screws S and S, pressed toward the center of the frame A until the shingles heretofore arranged between the cross-bars are firmly held between the bars. Now the frame is ready to be moved to any suitable place, where the lower ends of the shingles are dipped to any desired depth into a vessel filled with paint or any other suitable material, and after this is done the apparatus, with the shingles, is put aside to dry. This dipping process may be repeated as often as desired. \Vhen the shingles are thus painted, the hold of the screws S and S upon the cross-bars B B is relaxed, and the shingles drop from between thebars and are now ready to be packed.
\Vhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
An apparatus for painting shingles, comprising the frame A, having side bars, a and a, the cross-bars B B, and the screws S and S, substantially as and forthe purpose herein described.
CLIFFORD T. MILLARD.
