RICHARD HARELL, oF DUNKIRK, NEW YORK, .AssIGNoR rro WILLIAM H.
IIARELL, or sAMn PLACE.
PORTABLE STEAM-BOILER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 350,586, dated October 12, 1886.
Application filed July l. 1886. Serial No. 206,630. (No model.)
To all whom, it may con/cern.- I
Beit known that I, RICHARD HARELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dunkirk, in the county of Chautauqua and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Portable Steam-Boilers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of 'the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in portable steam boilers adapted to be used either for heating or power purposes; and it consists in certain novelty in the construction and arrangement of the various parts, all of which I will now proceed to point out and describe, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a vertical central section of a boiler embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section taken on line :v w of Fig. l.
Referring to the drawings, A representsa suitable base.
B is the jacket or outside casing, which is formed of two sheet-metal cylinders, 011e within the other, the space between the cylinders being filled with any suitable non conducting material.
C is the boiler; D, the outer shell of the same.
E is a water-leg, which surrounds the conibustion-chamber F and rests on the base A.
f is a suitable grate forming the bottom of the combustion-chamber.
I is the feed-passage, closed by a suitable, door, I. A
K is an opening for removing the clinker.
K is a suitable casting for closing the opening K.
K2 is an opening through which Ithe clinker iS passed into the ash-pit.
K3 is the ash-pit door. n
a is the tube-sheet forming the top of the boiler.
b is the crown or tube-sheet over the combustionchamber, and forming the bottom of the boiler.
cis a cast-iron ring resting ou top of the boiler, and having an outwardly-projecting annular ilange, c', which rests on top of the jacket B, and closes the top ofthe space between the boiler-shell and said jacket.
cl is a removable cover or plate, which rests oII top of the ring c, and formsa smoke chamber, e on top of the boiler.
d is a sheet-metal cover on top of the cover d, forming a space, di, above the cover d, which prevents radiation and waste of heat.
L are drop-tubes extending down into the combustion-chamber. Through the center of said drop-tubes are fines L', which extend up through the boiler and open into the chamber e, said flues or tubes being the direct dues of the boiler. f
M are indirect or return dues, which extend from the chamber e down through the water-leg and open into the smoke-due chamber D', formed between the shell D and jacket B. Said chamber D' communicates with the smoke stack/D".
Steam is conducted from the boiler by any of the well-known means. combustion pass up through the direct dues L', through the drop tubes and boiler, into the chamber e, then down through the indirect or return lines M into the smoke-due chamber, and up again around the outside of the boiler-shell.
A boiler constructed as above described occupies but very little space, and at the same time has a very large heating-surface. It also combines the advantages of boilers provided with direct and return dues with those possessed by boilers provided with droptubes.
My improved boiler may be used for heat- The products of g ing purposes, in which case I construct it of j cast-iron; or it may be used for power purposes, and I then construct it of wrought-iron or steel plates.
Having thus fully described my invention,
what Iclaim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-` A boiler for generating steam, ,provided with a water-leg surrounding the combustionchamber, drop-tubes extending down into the combinationchamber,` und direct fines extend In testimony whereof I affixniy signature ing up through the drop-tubes and boiler, in in presence of two Witnesses.
combination with a chamber on top of the boiler, communicating with the direct flues. RICHARD HARELL. and indirect fines communicating with said chamber and extending down through the Vitnesses:
Water-leg, all arranged and operating,` snb H. S. GHAMPLTN,
stantially as shown and described. JOHN A. TooMEY.
