SPECIFICATION i'ormin'g part of iiettera Patent No, 350,298, dated (October 5, 1886.
Armlicetion flledDecemher 26, 885, Serial r1), ltlfifli. (No model) i To aZZ whom it meg; concern.-
, Be it known that l, DANIEL Gsonn Doongsnnonn, of Sheldomin the oonnty of OBrien and State of lows, have invented e new and useful Improvement in Ghaffi Guides for Grain- Sepairators, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Reference is to be had to the ecczncnpemying drawings, forming a port of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a side elevstioinpertly insection, of the renrpart of a grain-separator to which my improvement has been applied. Fig. 2 is a plan view of my improvement and the rear part of the lower slicker. Fig. 3 is a sectional eleve'tionof apart of the same enlarged, taken? throughthe line a; m, Fig. 2. Fig. i is a sectionel elevation of the heed of the chaff-guide enlarged, taken through the line y 3 Fig. 2.
The object of this invention is to provide chaff-guides for gratin-separators, by the use of which all coarse foreign matter will be carried beyond theshoe, and thus the chaff will be prevented from parrying groin with it to the stackers, and which will thus preserve the great quantity of grain carried off with 'the,
chaff, and also greatly facilitutethe separation of grain in the shoe in grain-separators con.
structed in the ordinary manner.
The invention consists of the combinations of parts, including their construction, snmtentially as hereinafter set forth, and petntcdont' in the claims,
A represents the casing, B the upper shaker, 0 {he lower shaker, and l) the shoe, of an ordinary grainseparntor. The side bars of the lower shaker, (J, are extended little to the rearwnrdsmd in the said extensions are formed bearings for the journals E of the head of thechaff-guide.
The head of the chafign-ideis formed of two plates, 'F G. The plate E is slightly concave upon its upper side, and convex upon its lower side, and is provided with a row of perforations along its rear edge. The forward part of the plate G is bent downward, forming a downwardly-projecting flange, and in the said flange is formedn row of peribrutions corresponding in position end-distance apart with the per foretions of the plate 1 .part'or" the plate F, bringing the ends of the.
hooks into the concavity of the said plate F, and the two plates F G are secured to each other by bolts 1, hi ndin the fingers H securely in place. By thisennstrnction theupper side of the chaff guide will he left smooth, and will offer no obstruction to the rearward move ment of the cheif, By this construction, also,
he '3 'glli w he treasury tnkeneparnand fingers inserted or removedto regulate. the
distance apart of the fingers as the kind of i grain to be operated upon may require.
One journal, E, of the chetf-gnide projects and passes through the eyes'of the crank-arm .Lwhich hasa, short slot, K, formed in it 'to' receive the pin or bolt L", that secures the said crank-arm to thescid journal, so that the said journal will have a slight play within the eye of the said crank-arm. ljlie outer part of the crank-arm J is widened, and a curved slot, M,
formed in it to receive the bolt N,thz zt secures the said crenk-armto the side bar of the lower shaker, G, The slot M isourvcd upon the are Of a circle having its center in the axis of the journal E, so that by loosening the said bolt N the chaff-guide can'he readily adjusted in a horizonthl, an upwnrdly-iucltned,or a. down-- wartlly inclined position, as circumstances may require. With this construction, as the lower shaker, G, is vibrated longitudinally the elasticity of the fingers ll 311th the sliits K in the eyes of the crenk-airrns J give an uplift to the said fingers and to the 'clieil that may be upon them, shelling out the grain that may be in the chaff, and facilitating the rearward. passage of the said chclf to the stacker.
A great advantage of this im'pi'overnent is that this client-guide rclievcsthe shoe from all coarse foreign matter, and. thereby greatly for ciliintes tlie'separctiou of the grain and clia'if in the said shoe.
Having thus fully described myinventioml loo.
claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-' ehaffiguide F G H, the crank-arm having an eye formed with a short; s10b, K, and the pin L, substantially as herein shown and described;v whereby the, said journal will have a. little play in the said'eye, as set forth.
