Int. Cl. B26d 1/12 US. Cl. 2996 10 Claims ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A tool comprising a carrier which has two surfaces meeting at a corner and a bit recess in the corner with a mouth opening in each face and a bottom opposite each mouth, a bit disposed in said recess with an outer cutting edge projecting from each mouth, the bit and recess having interfitting guides extending obliquely to said bottom so that movement of the bit along the guide concomitantly adjusts the extent to which said edges project from said mouths, a lock disposed in the recess at one side of the bit, an actuator for moving the lock to hold the bit in the recess, a bit locator disposed in the recess on said side and having an abutment engaging the bit to limit inward movement of the bit away from said corner, and a screw extending through the lock and threading into said locator.
This application is a continuation-in-part of application Ser. No. 662,804, filed Aug. 23, 1967, allowed Dec. 28, 1967, and now abandoned.
Objects of the invention are to provide a tool which is simple and economical to produce, which can be assembled and adjusted quickly and conveniently and which is durable and reliable in use.
According to this invention the tool comprises a carrier having a bit recess with a bototm and a mouth opposite the bottom, a bit disposed in said recess with its outer cutting end projecting from said mouth and with a space between its inner end and said bottom, a lock dispoed in the recess at one side of the bit, an actuator for moving the lock to hold the bit in the recess, a bit locator disposed in the recess on said side and having an abutment engaging the bit to limit inward movement of the bit toward said botom, and a screw extending through the lock from the mouth toward said bottom and threading into said locator, whereby the bit may be adjusted away from said bottom with a screw driver inserted through said mouth. Preferably said abutment extends into said space and seats on said inner end of the bit, the tool has means for holding the lock against movement relatively to said bottom by said screw, said actuator comprises a second screw, said means comprises a circular flange on the second screw which fits into a circular recess in the lock, said flange is a head on the second screw, and the bit and recess have interfitting guides to guide the movement of the bit in response to movement of the locator.
For the purpose of illustration a typical embodiment is shown in the following drawings in which FIG. 1 is a side view;
FIG. 2 is an end view;
FIGS. 3 and 4 are sections on lines 3-3 and 4-4 respectively of FIG. 1; and
FIGS. 5 to 8 are like FIGS. 1 to 4 showing a modification.
The embodiment of FIGS. 1 to 4 comprises a rotary carrier 1 having a bit recess bounded by a back 2 facing in the direction of rotation, a front 3 facing in the opposite direction, a bottom 4 facing an end mouth and a bottom 6 facing a peripheral mouth. A bit 7, which has cutting edges and 9 projecting through the two mouths respectively, seats on the back 2. The abutting faces of the bit and back have interfitting serrations extending parallel to the bisector of the angle between the aforesaid bottoms so that adjustment of the bit along the serrations varies the extent to which the bit projects from both of said mouths.
A tapered lock 11 wedges between the front of the bit and the front of the recess, the lock being actuated by a screw 12 threading into the carrier and having its head 13 fitting in a semi-circular recess 14 in the lock. Seating on the inner end of the bit opposite the cutting edge 8 is a locator 16 for adjusting the extent to which the cutting edges project from the recess. The locator is actuated by a screw 17 extending through the lock.
To assemble the parts, the lock and locator are interconnected with screw 17 and inserted in the recess after which the bit is inserted in the direction of the serra-- tions and the screw 12 is threaded into the carrier. Before tightening the lock screw the locator is placed at or near the bottom 4 so that the cutting edges 8 and 9 project minimum distances from the end and peripheral mouths of the recess. As the edges wear the bit may be adjusted outwardly from time to time by threading screw 12 into the locator. Before adjustment the lock screw 12 should be loosened. While adjusting the bit the lock 11 is held against movement by the head 13 of the lock screw seating in the recess 14 in the lock.
The modification shown in FIGS. 5 to 8 is like the embodiment shown in FIGS. 1 to 4 and corresponding parts are correspondingly numbered. However the modification differs in the following respects. The lock 11' is behind the bit 7 instead of in front; the diagonal serrations are on the abutting surfaces of the bit 7' and lock 11' instead of the abutting surfaces of the bit 7 and recess back 2; and the abutting surfaces of the back 2' of the recess and the lock 11' have interfitting serrations parallel to the axis of the lock screw 17' to prevent sidewise movement of the lock as it moves in and out perpendicular to the bottom 4' of the recess. As in the first embodiment in-and-out adjustment of the locator 16' varies the extent to which the bit projects from both mouths of the bit recess.
With the heads of the two screws adjacent each other at the peripheral and end faces of the carrier they are accessible conveniently.
It should be understood that the present disclosure is for the purpose of illustration only and that this invention includes all modifications and equivalents which fall within the scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A tool comprising a carrier having a bit recess with a bottom and a mouth opposite the bottom, a bit disposed in said-recess with its outer cutting end projecting from said mouth and with a space between its inner end and said bottom, a lock disposed in the recess at one side of the bit, an actuator for moving the lock to hold the bit in the recess, a bit locator disposed in the recess on said side and having an abutment engaging the bit to limit inward movement of the bit toward said bottom, and a screw extending through the lock from the mouth toward said bottom and threading into said locator, whereby the bit may be adjusted away from said bottom with a screw driver inserted through said mouth.
