Be it known that I, ALFRED Swixonn, of the city and county ol' San. Francisco, State ot' California, have invented Improvements in Separator-s or Cleaners, and I hereby declare the following' to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same.

My invention relates to a machine which is to be employed for separating or cleaning peas, beans, almonds, txc., after being shelled.

It consists of a box or drum revolving upon a horizontal axis andadapted to receive the shelled peas or other articles in its interior, screening material for separating the larger from the smaller articles or cleaning them from dust or lighter waste matter,and a peculiar cam and its adj u ncts, whereby a longitudinal shakA ing motion may be given to said drum or box.

Referring to the accompanying drawings for a more complete explanation of myinveution, Figure l is an exterior, partly broken, perspective view ofthe machine. Fig. 2 is an enlarged view ol' a section ot' the cam and t-he oscillating rollers.

The peas after being shelled and discharged Vfrom the Shelling-maehine are, delivered 'through a suitable trough or funnel into a rectangular or polygonal box, A, which is supported upon a shaft, C, in a nearly or quite horizontal position. I prefer to iix the arms or supports which extend from the shalt to the sides ot' the box at points within the box,

-SO as to leave the ends B with unobstructed openings.

For the purpose ot' separating or sizing the peas or other substances, the sides of the box interiorsurl`ace,are fixed plates E. These plates project at or nearly at right angles from `the sides to which they are attached, and serve to lift the peas or other articles and drop them at'tcr the chamber has reached a certain point in its rotation. ers, E', act to move the peas or other articles to and l'ro within the chamber, thus distributing them andseparating them so that thesmaller ones may readily pass through the screen-surface, while the larger ones will be retained' within the box or chamber and eventually be delivered through the opposite end from the one through which they are received.

The box or chamber may be rotated about its longitudinal axis by any suitable gearing or mechanism, which may be connected with the shaft, and it is given a longitudinallyshaking motion by means o1' a peculiar cam, F. In the present case I have shown this cam as formed uponv or fixed to one end ofthe box or chamber, and its flange travels between two rollers, G. The shatts ot' these rollers are iixed tothe opposite ends ol.' a plate, H, through the center ol' which a supporting shaft or pin, I, extends. rThis pin is fixed to some stationary point, so that the rollers G stand upon opposite sides oi' the ange ofthe cam, which is thick enough to tit between them. NV hen the box or chamber is rotated uponits longitudinal axis, the flange ol' the cam traveling between these rollers will give the box a longitudinal reciproeation, the shaft C being so journaled in its boxes, or the chamber so mounted upon the shalt by means of a feather, sliding key, or otherwise as to allow this reeiprocation. The movable plate H carries the rollers G, and its oscillations upon its supporting shalt or pin I allow the rollers to adapt themselves to the varying positions of the flange ofthe cam, so that they will always travel in. one direction, and by thus adapting themselves to the varying iorin ofthe cam the friction is greatly reduced.

The screen-surface may be made with different sizes ot' mesh, so as to grade the product, which, falling into a table or receiver below, is conveyed away by chutes K.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters vPatent, is-.
