Be it known that I, JOSEPH GIBBONS HILL, a citizen of the United States, residing atFlatbush, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented new anduset'ul Improve ments in Car-XVheels, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to the. eonstruction ot' carwvheels, and the purpose thereof is to ini part to such wheels a natural elasticity and a high degree of satety, and to effect increased economy in production, the same being the products of the novel construction which eonstitutes the subjeet-matter of this a1 p'lieation.
The invention consists in the several novel l'ez'itures ol' eonstruetion and eoinbinations ot' parts hereinafter l'ull v set forth, and deiinitely pointed out in theelaimsannexed to thisspeei tication.
Referring to the aeeom anying drawings, Figure '1. is an elevation of the complete wheel. Fig. 2 is a eentral vertical section in the axial line of the wheel. Fig. 3 'is an elevation of the parts composing the wheel slightly separated. Fig. 4 is eentiral vertical seetion ot'the parts eom 'iosing the wheel slightly removed from eaeh other to show the construction.
In the said drawings,the reterenee-numeral 1 designates the rim of the wheel, which is east or rolled. and is provided with the flange 2 and an interior shoulder or flange, 53, which is located centrally on the inner face of the a11- nular rim. The se arate hub 4 may be formed by casting. or it may be struck up in a die. It is provided with a eireumterential flange or shoulder, 5, and a central opening, 6, for the axle.
The numeral 6 denotes the webplates, which eonsist of two annular pieces, preferably wrought, though they may be l'ormed in other ways. Caeh of these plates has an external diameter equahor substantially so,to the internal.
dimension of the rim, and is provided with a eentral opening, 7, of such size that it closely embraces the hub portion 4.
The annular plates 6 are eaeh curved or bent outwardly at a point between the hub and the rim of the wheel, the curve formed being annular relatively to the plate, and in eross-section approximating the form of a semi'ellipse, as shown at 8, and the curved portion in each being substantially opposite that of the other.

Above and below the annular curved portion 8 .is an annular flat portion, 9, adapted to lie against the flanges or shoulders 3 and 5'up0u the rim and hub, respectively.
The parts a reassembled and uni ted by means of bolts 10, assingthrough perforations 11 in the outer tlat portions, 1), and through similar ploying plates having annular corrugation of this kind the rim and hub have both been cast upon the previously-corrugated plates. and the shrinkage of the rim, as it eooled has invariably produced either a dangermis weakness or a positive break. The impossibility, more over, ot'seeuring anyt hing like unil'orm results in sueh a mode of eonstruction, even had sue eess been possible, has caused. this construction to be generally mndemned. In eases where the corrugations havebeen radial an increased rigidity has been the result, whereas it is the principal. object of inventors to promote and increase the elasticity of the parts.
By my invention I not only provide a. wheel having a high degree of elasticity and possess ing great strength, but I materially decrease the cost of manufacture, which is a cousir'leration of the highestimportance.
I do not broadly elaima separate or particular rim or a separate or particular hub or corrugated plates, but the particular construction and combination of the parts hcreinbefore described and shown, whereby elasticity is pro vided and a greater degree ofsafety is SOClll'Otl.
The essential features comprising my invention reside not specially in the fact that the rim has an exterior side flange, but in the fact that I provide a structure which is now as a whole and comprises a rim having a single eentral inwardly-projeoting annular flange, a, hub formed centrally lmtween its ends with an outwardly-projeeti ng flange, web-plates formed with. annular curves semi-elliptiein cross-section, said plates being seated on the hub and bearing, respectively, against the oppositesides ot' the said two flanges,
which passes through both web-plates to seand bolts, each one of IOO cure them to the flanges. This construction and combination. insures strength and safety and provides the requisite elasticity,and differs substantially from a wheel for agricultural implements'coniprising a rim with an annular inwardly-project-ing flange at or adjacent to each edge, a hub having an outwardly-proj ecting annular flange adjacent to each end, and two corrugated sheet-metal. disks seated on the hub and bolted, respectively, to the flanges on the hub andthe flanges on the rim. Such a wheel may be useful as a drive-Wheel for agricultural implements; but it lacks the solidity, compactness, and substantial qualities that are requisite in a supportingwheel for railwaycars.
That I claim is 1. A railway-car wheel consisting of the l'llll 1, having theinwardly-proj ecting annular flange 3 formed centrally on its inner face, the hub 4, formed with the central annular flange 5, and the web-plates 6, each formed with annular curves semi-elliptic in cross-section, said plates being secured at their'inner edges directly to the opposite faces of the single central hub-flange 5, and at their outer edges direetly'to the opposite faces of the single central rim-flange 3, substantially as described.
2. A railway-car -wheel consisting of the rim 1, )rovidcd with the exterior annular side flange, 2, and having the single inwardly-projecting annular flange 3 formed centrally on its inner face, the hub 4, formed with the single central annular flange 5, the web-plates 6, each formed with annular curves semi-elliptic in cross-section, and having their inner edges abutting directly against the opposite faces of the single central hub-flange and their outer edges abutting directly against the opposite faces of the single central rim-flange, and bolts 10, each passing through both Web-plates and attaching them to the said central flanges, substantially as described.
