INVENTOR Jaw pg ATTORNEYS.
WITNESSES UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LE\VlS B. \VHITE, OF NE\V YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO LEON ABBETT, OF JERSEY CITY, NE\V JERSEY.
-GRIP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 350,028, dated September 28, 1886,
Application tiled October 20, 1895.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEWIS B. WHITE, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Cable- Grips, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved cable-grip which is simple in construction, grips and releases the cable rapidly, and holds it firmly and securely.
The invention consists in the construction and combination of parts and details, and willbe fully described and set forth hereinafter, and then pointed out in the claims, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, in which Figurel is alongitudinal partially-sectional view of my improved grip. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same, partly in section on line of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an inverted sectional plan view of the same on the line y 9/ of Fig. 1.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
The cylinder A is held vertically in astrong frame, A, on the under side of the ear, and contains the piston B, from which the pistonrod 0 projects through a stuffing box in the bottom of the cylinder, and has its lower end connected with a downwardly-projecting rod, D. A frame, E, is arranged in the direction of thelength of the car, and is secured to thelower ends of metal plates F, projecting downward from the bottoms of the car. The frame F is adapted to be received in the cable-trough, and is provided on each side with two pairs of grippingjaws, G G, one pair at each side of the rod D, and all mounted to slide vertically on the sides of the frameE. The upper and lower connecting-bars of the frame E serve to limit the motion of the gripping'jaws G G, and in the central open space of the frame I the rod 1) on the piston-rod O operates. The upper jaws, G, are connected by the connecting rods H with the T-levers J, pivoted on each side of the plates F, and the lower jaws, G, are connected by the connecting-rods I with the opposite ends of the T-levers J. The shanks of the levers J are connected by the rods Kwith the levers L, pivoted on the plates F, and having their adjacent swinging ends L forked to Serial No. 190,421. (No model.)
receive between them the sleeve M, mountedrigidly on the lower end of the piston-rod O, and provided with the top and bottom collars, d and g, the fasteni ng-key being passed through the collar (Z and piston-rod C. From the sides of the lower end of the bar I) the forked arms 0 project upward and outward, and in the forks of the arms O the rollers l? are journaled, which run on the sides of the cable trough, (not shown,) thus serving as guides for the grip. \Vedge shaped lugs Q project from the sides of bar 1), ashort distance above 'the lower end ofthe same, and the outer edges of the lugs are inclined inward and downward, as shown in Fig. 2. Rollers Rare journaled on the sides of the frame 1* and serve to sup port the cables freely when not gripped, said cables being shown at V, one at each side of the frame F. The pipes S and T conduct compressed air into the upper and lower ends of the cylinder A, and are provided with the four-way cock \V, or with any other suitable regulating device.
The operation is as follows: \Vhen the op crating-cables 'V rest on the rollers R, as shown in Fig. 1, and the same are to he gripped to propel the ear, compressed air is admitted into the lower end of the cylinder A,the piston l! is forced upward, and near the end of its movement the collar on the sleeve M strikes the forked ends of the lever L, thereby, through the connecting rods and levers, pressing the grippingjaws G Gfirmly on the cables, which are thus firmly gripped. To release the cables, the compressed air is permitted to escape from the lower end of the cylinder, allowing the piston to descend, and the lovers L, being no longer supported, fall oftheir own weight and that of their connections to their former positions, thus separating the jaws G G. If it is desired to throw the cables entirely off the grip, compressed. air is admitted into the upper part of the cylinder A, whereby the bar D is forced down ward, causing the beveled lugs Q to press the cables out from the frame F off the rollers R, and thus permitting the cables to drop past the lowerjaws, G, into their normal positions above the projecting arms 0. \Vhen the cables are to be taken up again, compressed air is admitted into the lower part of the cyl- ICO by the same in the cable-trough.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In acablc-grip, the combination, with a plate, of two pairs of gripping-jaws on each side of the same, substantially as herein shown and described. 2. In a cable-grip, the combination, with. a plate, of avpair of gripping-jaws mounted to slide vertically on said plate, and of a c0mpressed-air. cylinder, a piston in the same, and
a piston-rod connected by rods with the jaws,
substantially as herein shown and described.
3. In a cable-grip, the combination, with a compressed-air cylinder, a piston in the same, and a piston-rod connected with the piston, of a rod projecting down from the piston-rod and provided with lateral projections at its lower end, and of cable-gripping jaws operated from the pistoirrod, substantially as herein shown and described. 4. In a cable-grip, the combination, with the vertically-moving rod 0, of the rod D, projecting down from the same, which rod D is provided on its lower end with two lateral projections on the same side, the cable being between the said projections, substantially as herein shown and described.
5. In a cable-grip, the combination, with the vertically-moving rod 0 and mechanism for operating the same, of the rod D, projecting downward from the piston-rod G, the arms 0, and the beveled lugs Q on the side of the said rod, and ot' cablc-grippingjaws operated .from the said vertically-moving rod 0, substantially as herein shown and described.
6. The combination, with a cable grip rod, of arms on the lower end of the same, which arms project from the side of the rod and upward and outward, substantially as herein shown and described.
7. In a cable-grip, the combination, with a frame to be fastened on the underside of the car, of sliding grip-jaws on the bottom part of the said frame, the T-shaped levers J, pivoted on the frame and connected by suitable rods with the jaws, the pivoted levers L, connected with the T-shaped levers J, the rod G, which operates the levers L, the piston B, and cylinder A, substantially as herein shown and described.
8. In a cable-grip, the combination, with. the cylinder A, the piston B, and the pistonrod 0, of the flanged sleeve M on the pistonrod, the pivoted levers L, acted upon by the flanges of the sleeve M, and gripping-jaws operated from the levers L, substantially as herein shown and described.
9. In a cable-grip, the combination," with the cylinder A, the-piston B, and the pistonrod 0, of the levers L, operated from the piston-rod O, grippingjaws operated from the levers L by means of suitable rods, the rod D, projecting down from the piston-rod O, the
, bevel lugs Q, and the inclined arms 0 on the lower end of the said rod D, and of a frame on which the gripping-jaws slide, substantially as herein shown and described.
10. In a cable-grip, the combination, with two jaws mounted to move toward and from .each other, of a frame on which they are mounted, a T-shaped lever having the opposite ends connected with ,the two jaws, and of 1nechanism for operating the T-shaped lever, substantially as herein shown and described.
