PICKER STAFF CHECK FOR LO0M$. No. 349,979. Patented Sept. 28, 1886.

NITE STATES BENJAMIN F. CARTER, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
PICKER-STAFF CHECK FOR LOOMS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 349,979, dated September 28, 1886.
Application filed January 0, 1886. Serial No. 188,117. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN F. CARTER, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Picker- Staff Checks for Looms; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the ac companying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invent-ion relates to pickerstaff checks for looms; and it consists in the construction and novel combination of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a bottom view of a portion of a lay-beam of a loom, showing the picking-stick in section and the pickerstaff check in full lines in one position. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the picking-stick and the check in another position. Fig. 3 is a bottom view of the picker-staff check detached. Fig. 4 is aside elevation oi'the pi ckerstaff check detached, the spring being shown in dotted lines; and Fig. 5 is a transverse vertical sectional view of the check.
Referring by letter to the accompanying drawings, A designates thclay-beain ofa loom, and B the slot therein at one end in which the pickerstaff works.
0 designates the picker-staff, the picker not being shown, it being of any well-known construction.
D is a plate secured to the under face of the beam A by screws D D and E is the latch, which is angular in form, having its end portion F slightly curved, as shown, said end G terminating in a short arm, H. The latch E is pivoted at its inner end to the inner end ot the plate D on screw D, and aspring, I, spiral in form, is interposed between the latch E and an upwardly-projecting shoulder, J, ris ing from the adjustable slide K, which latter is secured to the plate D by a set-screw, L, passed up through a slot, M, in the bottom of the plate D, and near its outer end. By adjusting slide K the tension of the spring I is regulated to cause it to exert greater or lesser resistance to the latch E, as may be necessary in the use of the device. The latch E is normally at an inclined angle to the piekingstick, and checks the pickiugstick and prevents it from traveling to the end of the race, and holds said stick by friction until the stick is struck and driven back by the force of the shuttle, when it is sent from the opposite side of the race. In this construction there is no tendency to rebound in the shuttle and no danger of breaking the cops, which is of importance in running a loom, as with the check more force can be given to the shuttle in driving it without injury to the cop or rebounding of the shuttle.
Having described this invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
1. The combination, with the lay-beam of the loom, formed with the slot and the picking-stick therein, of the plate D, spring I, adjustable slide J K, latch E, and screws L and D, substantially as specified.
2. The combination, with the plate D and latch E, of the spring I, adjustable slide J K, and set-screw L,'substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
BENJAMIN F. CARTER.
IVitnesses:
G. H. BARRETT, 0. WV. SNIDER.
