TRUNK AND FURNITURE GASTER.
I UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SIGISMUND M. MICHELSON, OF MILVAUKEE, VISOONSIN, ASSIGOR OF ONE-HALF TO GEORGE SYLVESTER, OF SAME PLAGE.
TRUNK OR FURNITURE CASTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 349,948, dated September 28, 1886.
Application filed July Q0, 1885.
To @ZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, SrGIsnUND M. MICH- ELsoN, of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee, and in the State ot Visconsiu, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trunk orFurnitu re Casters; and I do hereby declare that the following is a l'ull, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to trunk-easters, and will be l'ully described hereinafter.
In the drawings, Figurel is a section of my improved caster. Figs. 2, 5, (i, and 7 are like sections of modifications of the same. Fig. 3 is a rear edge view ol.' the caster shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a front edge view ot' the same caster, the housing being omitted in Figs. 3 and 4,to clearly show the construction and arrangement of the parts which would otherwise be concealed thereby. Fig. 8 is aplan viewof the base-plate removed from the rest of the easter. Fig. 9 is a plan view of the base-plate in position on the caster. Figs. 10 and 11 are respectively perspective and plan views oi' a locking-lug for securing the base-plate and caster together'. Figs. 12 te 17 are details of parts hereinafter referred to.
A is the base-plate, which, as shown in Figs. 8 and 9, is formed with a series ofkey-hole slots, a, nea-r its outer edge, and a preferably larger keyhole slot, a, near its center.
B is a wheel-frame, which is shown in plan in Fig. 12, and which is provided with a key hole slot, 1, intermediate between the bearings for the large wheel b and those i'or the smaller wheel, b.
b are grooved wheels, which are let into the upper portion of the wheel-frame, as shown in Fig. 1, and these work up against an annular rib, c.
The bottom piece, D, ofthe caster is slotted, as at d, and has cast with it hangers D', to receive the axle of the large wheel b, and the axle is held in 'place in the hangers by projections B,that extend down vfrom the casting B, whichlatter forms the wheel-frame, an opening, B2, being left in the wheel-frame between the projections B', i'o receive the upper portions of the wheel.
F is a center-pin, which holds the bottom securing the center-pin in place.
Serial No. 172,062. (Model.)
Vhen my device is to be pnt together, lthe wheel-frame is placed upon the bottom plate, D, after the bolt F has been placed in the slot d in said bottom plate, and the axle of wheel b has been placed in its bearings in suchbottom plate, the base-plate is placed upon the wheel frame, with the head ot' bolt F projecting through the larger portion of the vkey-slot a', formed therein. Said base-plate is then moved to one side until it coincides with the bottom plate and the bolt is caught by the narrow portion of the slot a. The lng F is then inserted in slot a,to lock the bolt in. The caster thus put together is then slipped into the housing G, the heads of the rivets f/ passing through the larger portions of the key-openings a, the base-plate is turned into the position shown in Fig. 9, andthe parts thus securely locked together'. Thelockinglug F', (shown in detail in Figs. l0 and 11) consists of a round depending hub adapted to t just within thelargest or circular part of the key-hole slot a in the plate A, while the lug is prevented from dropping through said slot by means of two little wings or flanges, one on each side of the upper part of said hub, and from the latter part there extends a projection just the width of the long narrow part of the said key-hole slot u, but of less length, and beveled on top toward its end, so that when the bolt F is in place, as just described, the beveled end ofthe said projection will tit under the upper head of said bolt F, and thus the key-hole slot a will be completely closed up, and the bolt Fprevented from moving out of place.
In the inodiiication shown in Fig. 5 the bottom piece, D, has hangers similar to those in Fig. 1, and wheel-frame B is similar in construction to that shown in Fig. 1, except that instead of using the loose pin F, I form the bottom piece with a pin which is somewhat pointed on top, and a cap, l1., is placed upon it, so that when the plate A is placed upon the aunulus or housing G the apex of the cap will extend up through a central opening or into an indentation in the base-plate, whichlatter is secured upon the housing, as in Fig. 1. In the modification shown in Fig. 6 the wheel-frame is similar to that shown in Fig. 1, and the pin F is locked in a base-plate by a ICO Y fers only slightly from that in Fig. l, and the head of the bolt is covered by a cap, j'. In these last two modifications lateral displacement of the wheel-frame is prevented by the annular ribs c', acting on the flanges of wheels b.
In the modification shown in Fig. 2 the bottom plate, D, is made in one piece with the housing G, and while the base-plate is secured to the trunk or furniture-leg by any suitable means the parts are locked together by pin F, as in Fig. 1.
In Figs. 14 and 16 I dispense with small Wheels entirely, and simply use a frame, B, for centering the bottom plate, this frame having depending lugs B', for holding-the axle' of the large Wheel in place.
In Fig. 17 I show a frame similar to that in Fig. 1G, with notches h on its sides, and this Iplace in a cup, D G, the annulus G of which is notched, as at h2, to receive one end of an axle that is supported at its other end in a similar notch in the frame. These Wheels Zr',
Fig. 17, maybe either fianged or grooved, as in Figs. 5 and 6.
Having thus described my invention,I what I claim as new, and rdesire to secure vby Letters Patent, is-
1. In a trunk or furniture caster, the combination, with a housing,of a wheel-frame, slotted bottom and base plates, and alockingpin and locking-lug adapted to fit Within the central slot in the base-plate, as set forth.
2. The base-plate have key-hole slots, as described, in combination with the housing G, having projecting rivets g, slotted wheel-frame and bottom plate, a locking-pin, and lockingf forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand, at Milwaukee, in thecounty of Milwaukee and State of fisconsin, in the presence-oftwo Witnesses.
SIGISMUND M, MICHELSON.
