SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 349,733, dated September 28, 1886.
Application filed October 14, 1885.
Serial No. 179.856. No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, NEAL McGoLDRIeK, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Rein-Holder, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure 1 is a broken front elevation of my new and improved reinholder. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same:
My invention consists of a reinholder provided with a clamp by which it may be attached to any part of a vehicle.-
The invention also consists in providing one of the plates} of the device with a piv-' oted grip-plate to insure always a satisfactory attachment of the rein-holder to the dashboard or other part of the vehicle.
The invention also consists of the construction, arrangement, and combination of parts, all as hereinafter described and claimed.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a casting composed, essentially, of the horizonis pivoted the clamp-plate g, to act in eonnectal portion a, depending plate a, and upwardly-proj ecting arm (0*, that constitutes one of the jaws for holding the lines. The casting A is recessed above the horizontal portion a, to form the chamber 1) to receive the spring 0, and it is formed with the cheek-pieces d d, between which the other rein-holding jaw, e, is pivoted. The spring 0 acts against the lower portion, 6, of the jaw 0, below its pivot f, to close the jaw 6 against the jaw a in a wellknown manner. To the horizontal portion (0 tion with the depending plate a to clamp the rein-holder to the dash-board or other convenient part of a vehicle. A spring, 71, is placed upon the pivot i of the clamp-plate g, to normally hold the plate g pressed toward the plate a, and at its upper end the clamp-plate is provided with the screw j, which acts against one of the cheek-pieces d for giving the plate a vise-like action for securing the holder with'sufficient firmness to the vehicle.
In most'cases I shall provide the clampplate 9 at its lower edge, upon the inside, with a pivoted plate, k,- but this may be omitted, if desired. When used, it insures a more perfect action of the plate 9 in grasping the dashboard or other part of the vehicle, and in case the holder is. designed especially to be at tached to a dash-board having a frame of iron, I shall form the plate a with a projection, Z, and the clamp-plate g with a corresponding enlargement or projection, Z, which will grasp the frame of the dash-board and assist in holding the rein-holder upon it.
claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. An improved rein-holder consisting of a body portion provided with two rigid jaws projecting in opposite directions and two pivoted and spring-actuated jaws, one opposite each of the rigid jaws, as and for the purpose specified.
2. As a new article of manufacture, a reinholder having jaws a c, for holding the reins, and a'permanent ja.v, a, and hinged jaw g, for attaching the rein-holder to a vehicle, substantially as described.
3. The combination, with the jaws a e, for holding the reins, and the jaw a, of the hinged jaw 9, arranged opposite to the jaw a, and provided at its upper end with a screw, j, substantially as and for the purposes set fortln 4. The combination, with casting A, provided with the rein-holding jaws a e and the rigid jaw a, of the jaw g, pivoted to said castprojection Z, and the screw j, substantially as herein shown and described.
5. The combination, with the rein-holding jaws and the jaw a, of the plate 9, hinged opposite the jaw aand provided with the screw j at its upper end and the hinged plate at its lower end, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
6. The combination, with the rein-holding jaws and the jaw a, of the plate g, hinged 0pposite the jaw a and formed with the projection Z upon its inner surface, the jaw a being provided with a corresponding projection, Z, on its inner surface, substantially as and for the purposes described.
NEAL 'MCGOLDRICK.
Having thus fully described my invention, 1'
ing, provided with the hinged plate 70 and the
