SPECIFICATION forming part ofv Letters Patent No. 349,692-, dated September 28, 1886.

' To all whom, it may concern:
Beit known that I, FRANKLIN D. CHILD, of fest Newton, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented eertain new and useful Improvements in Cotton- Gins, of which the following, taken in connection with the .accompanying drawings, is a specification.
My inventionrelates to the class of eottongins known as rollergins5 and it consists in certain novel features of construction, arrangement, and combination of parts, which will be readily understood by reference to the description of the drawings and to the claims to be hereinafter given. v
Figure l of the drawings is a plan of a ma'- chine embodying my invention, one halt' of each of two upper cross bars being broken away to show the parts beneath. Fig. 2 is a vertical section on line x w on Fig. l. Fig. 3 is an end elevation. Fig. 4 is a vertical section of a portion of the upper part of the ma chine on the same line as Fig. 2, but drawn to an enlarged scale. Fig. 5 is a plan of oneof the plate pressinglevers and portions of the beater-cylinder and seed-arresting plate, also enlarged, and Fig. 6 is a rear elevation of a portion of the pin -earrying bar 'and an attached cap.
In the drawings, A A are the si de frames of the machine, connected together by the bars B C, the feedtable l), and the plates E and F, said frames being slotted from their upper sides to receive the boxes a, b, and c.
G is the ginning-eylinder, having its periphery covered with leather d, and mounted in bearings in the boxes b b, (Shown only by dotted lines in Figs. 2, 3, and 4,) said cylinder being arranged with its upper surface slightly above the upper surface of the feed-table D, and having a rotary motion imparted thereto in the direction indicated by the arrow l on Figs. 3 and 4, by means of the belt l, leading from a pulley on the driving-shaft J to the pulley l on the shaft of said cylinder.
Above the cylinder G, and mounted in the boxes a a, is the beater-cylinder K, provided with a series of oblique disks, e e, arranged with their peripheries in contact wit-h or in close proximity to the periphery of the cylinder G, said cylinder K being revolved in the Serial No. 197,632. (No model.)

Each of the levers M has formed in the under side of the pad, at its front end, a shoulder, z', which abuts against the rear edge of the breast plate j, to prevent said plate being moved to the rear and downward bythe revolution of the cylinder G.
The bar C is preferably east in one piece with the caps C', and has set in its under side a series of downWardly-projecting pins, fi', as shown in Figs. i and 6, which, while they will permit the cotton-seed to pass them as they are thrown out over the breast-platej` and the pads ofthe levers M, so that they will fall upon the inelinedjplate E, and thence to the floor outside of the plate F, will serve to arrest any plate f, and cause it to be carried around with the cylinder K and united with the cotton bcing fed to the ginning-cylinders. y

By the use ot' the series ot' independentlymovable levers M, arranged to press upon. the breast-platef, one portion ot' the plate f may rise to permit the passage ot' a bunch ot' fiber, While other portions are held down by the levers not immediately affected by the passage of said bunch, it being understood that said breast-plate f is made sufficient-ly thin to permit it to spring under such circumstances.
Vhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
l. In a cotton-gin, the combination of the ginning-cylinder, the breast-plate, andthe series of spring-pressed levers, each provided with a shoulder to abut against the rear edge of said plate, all constructed, arranged, and adapted to operate substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. The combination, in a cotton -gin, ofv a giiniing-cylindcr, a breast-plate, a series of pivoted levers, each provided with a shoulder to abut against the rear edge o't' said plate, and a pad toerest upon said plate, a bolt pivoted to smooth holes in the caps C, and rest at their each of said levers and provided with a nut, a Washer, and a spring, and a bar provided in one edge thereof with a series of open slots to receive said bolts, substantially as described.
3. The combination, in a cotton-gin, of a.
ginning cylinder, a breast plate, a series ot' spring -pressed levers, each provided with a shoulder to abut against the rear edge of said plate, anda pad to rest upon the upper side of said plate, and a beater-cylinder provided with a series of obliquely-arrangedvdisks, substantially as and for the purpose described.
4. The combination of the ginning-cylinder G, the plate f, the series of levers M, cach provided with a nut, a Washer, and a spring, the slotted bar B, th e beater-cylinder K, and the bar C, provided with the series of fingers or pins 13, all constructed, arranged, and adapted lo operate substantially as described.

6. In a cotton-gin, the combination ofthe ginning and beater cylinders, a plate, an adjustable bar provided with a series of open slots, a series ol levers pivoted to said bar, and each provided with a shoulder to abut against 4the rear edge of said plate, and a pad to press upon the upper side thereof, a bolt pivoted to each of said levers and arranged to engage with the slots in said bar, a nut fitted to the upper end of each of said bolts, so as to be adjustable thereon, and a washer, and a spring mounted upon each of said bolts between its nut and said bar, substantially as described.
