Be it known that I, EDWARD G. JENNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Allegan, in the county of Allegan and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and use f ul Improvements in DoonOperators; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the SLlll6,.l.6f616l1(56 being had to the accompanying drawings, and

My invention relates to door-operators, and has for its object to simplify and improve this class of devices, whereby the mechanism is made more positive in its operation and reduced to a more compact form.
It consists in the novel construction and combination of the several parts, more fully hereinafter set forth, claimed, and shown in the annexed drawings, in which Figurcl is a view of the lower portion of a door, showing the floor beneath in section, exposing the door-operating mechanism. Fig. 2 is a sectional view on the line X X of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the operating-gearing. Fig. 4 is a section 011 the line YYof Fig. 2, looking in the direction of the arrow, parts being removed.
The door A is hinged in the usual manner above the floor B, beneath which is a space for the reception of the operating mechanism supported by uprights or beams C. An opening is formed in the floor near the front edge of the door at right angles to the plane of the door when closed. A board, D, fitting in said openings bears upon rods or plates E, supported 011 cranks e e. The cranks e are secured to and project in the same lateral direction from a rock-shaft,F,1nounted in hearings in the beams or uprights G beneath the flooring. An arm, G, depending from the shaft F connects with atoothed disk or mutilated gear, H, journaled on a shaft or stud, l, by apitman, g. A vertical rod or shaft, J, mounted in bearings and preferably in line with the axis about which the door swi ngs, is provided with a pinion, K, meshing with the teeth 9 of the disk or mutilated gear H. Arod, j, secured to the door at one end,and having its other end keyed to or otherwise rigidly fastened to the shaft J, forms the connection between the door and its operating mechanism. The rod j is preferably the prolongation of the pivot for securing the two parts of the hinge together, and is secured to that part of the hinge fastened to the door, so that in the rotation of the rod it will cause a corresponding movement of the door.
The board D extends sufficiently far on one side of the plane of the door, so that a person stepping thereon will effect an opening of the door without the latter interfering with or preventing the continued advance of the person. In practice a depression of the board rocks the shaft F in its bearings, throwing the arm G to 'one side and rocking the toothed disk or mutilated gear about itsaxial line or support, and effects a rotary motion of the shaft J and rod- 9, thereby opening the door. The parts are returned to their normal position, when the weight is removed from off the board, by a weighted lever, L, extending from the shaft F.
The board D projects some distance above the level of the floor, and is provided with a cap, D, extending beyond its edges to overlap the joint between it and the flooring. The space between the edges of the cap and the floor maybe covered by a hinged flap, M, as shown.
Having thus fully described my invention, whatl claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, with the doorand a rod secured thereto and projecting therefrom, of a movable board, a rock-shaft, a crank connecting the rock-shaft with the board, an arm pro-.
jecting from the rock-shaft, a pitman connect ing with the arm at one end, and gearing e011- necting the opposite end of the pitman with. the rod projecting from the door, and a. weighted lever extending from the rock-shaft, substantially as and for the purpose described.
