. DISPLAY FOR-ARTICLES v Filed Dec. 21, '1967 Q'Sheets-Sheet 2 FIG. 6
ATTORNEYS United States Patent C) US. Cl. 211-126 15 Claims ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The display for articles disclosed herein comprises a plurality of vertical uprights having vertically spaced slots therein. A plurality of baskets made of Wire elements are removably mounted on the uprights. Each basket comprises a back, bottom and front and is openended with removable and adjustable dividers or transverse walls. The back, bottom and front are made of wire elements and include longitudinally extending wire elements and transversely extending longitudinally spaced wire elements which form a part of the back, bottom and front. Longitudinally spaced reinforcing members of heavier cross sectional construction are fixed to the back, bottom and front. Brackets are mounted between a pair of the transverse wire elements adjacent reinforcing members. Each bracket has a portion encircling one of the longitudinally extending wire elements of the back so that the bracket has limited movement longitudinally of the basket. Each bracket further includes a portion extending in front of the adjacent reinforcing member and thereafter rearwardly with hook means thereon for engaging the slots of the uprights. The permissible longi tudinal movement of the bracket permits the basket to accommodate to misalignment of the uprights.
This invention relates to displays for articles and particularly to such displays which utilize baskets or containers that are removably mounted on vertical uprights.
In one type of display for articles that is commonly used, a plurality of open-ended baskets are removably supported in side-by-side relation on vertical uprights and removable transverse dividers are provided at longitudinally spaced points on the baskets to divide the areas for receiving different types of articles. The baskets conventionally have hook means thereon for engaging slots in the vertical uprights. One of the problems with such a construction is that the vertical uprights are often not accurately aligned and the hooks therefore do not readily engage the slots of the uprights. If the hooks are bent to accommodate the particular misalignment, the basket will probably not be adapted for use with different sets of uprights.
Among the objects of this invention are to provide a construction wherein the baskets can be readily mounted and removed and which will accommodate for misalignment of the uprights; wherein the baskets can be constructed to receive heavy articles in accordance with the type of useage to which the baskets are to be used.

FIG. 3 is a fragmentary front elevational view on an enlarged scale taken along the line 33 in FIG. 2.
FIG. 4 is a fragmentary sectional view taken along the line 4-4 in FIG. 3.
FIG. 5 is a fragmentary front elevational view of a modified form of the invention.
FIG. 6 is a fragmentary front elevational view of a further modified form of the invention.
FIG. 7 is a fragmentary side elevational view of the form of the invention shown in FIG. 6.
FIG. 8 is a fragmentary sectional view taken along the line 8-8 in FIG. 6.
FIG. 9 is a fragmentary front elevational view of a further modified form of the invention.
FIG. 10 is a fragmentary side elevational view of the form of the invention shown in FIG. 9.
FIG. 11 is a perspective view of the mounting bracket shown in FIGS. 9 and 10.
Referring to FIG. 1, the display for articles embodying the invention comprises a wall 20 having horizontally spaced vertical uprights 21 therein, each upright 21 having vertically spaced openings 22. A plurality of con tainers or baskets 23 made up of wire elements are removably mounted on the uprights 21.
Each basket 23 is open-end and includes a slightly forwardly inclined back 24, bottom 25 and upwardly and forwardly inclined front 26. Each of the back 24, bottom 25 and front 26 comprises longitudinally extending wire elements 27, 28, 29. Transversely extending wire elements 30 extend and are fastened transversely to the longitudinal elements 27, 28, 29. Generally U-shaped reinforcing members or rods 31 are provided at longitudinally spaced points along each basket 23 and are fastened to the underside of the elements 27, 28, 29 so that the rod members are thereby fixed to the back 24, bottom 25 and front 26.
In accordance with the invention, bracket means are provided at longitudinally spaced points on at least one of the longitudinal wire elements 27 of the back 24 for limited longitudinal movement adjacent some of the reinforcing members 31. Specifically, as shown in FIGS. 1-4, a bracket 32 comprises a body portion 33. A loop portion 34 on the lower end of the body portion 33 is bent around and encircles the lower longitudinally extending wire element 27. The bracket 32; further includes a flange 35 that extends in front of the adjacent reinforcing member 31 and thereafter is bent and extends rear wardly and has hooks 36 thereon that engage the openings 22 of the upright 21. A metal L-shaped bracket 37 is fixed to the back and bottom portions of the reinforcing rod 31 and extends rearwardly into engagement with the upright 21 to space the lower end of the basket away from the uprights and then thereby define spacer means.
As shown in FIG. 4, each bracket 32 is thus mounted for limited movement longitudinally of the wire element 27 and in turn of the entire basket so that it can be shifted to accommodate any misalignment between adjacent vertical uprights 21.
In the mounted position shown in FIG. 2, any load on the basket 23 tends to rotate the basket counterclockwise as viewed in FIG. 2 bringing the reinforcing element 31 into contact with the flange 35. The vertical load on the basket is transmitted through the loop portion 34 and flange 35 to the hooks 36.
-In the form of the invention shown in FIG. 5, the bracket 40 comprises a body portion 41 that has two spaced loop portions 42, 43 thereby engaging the longitudinal member 27 at two areas so that a greater load can be supported by the basket. The bracket 40 includes a flange 44 that has the hooks thereon in the manner of the flange 35 of the previous form of the invention.
In the form of the invention shown in FIGS. 7-8, the bracket 45 comprises a body 46 to which a Wire element 47 that is generally U-shaped is fixed as by welding. The free ends 48 of the wire element are looped around the portion of the longitudinally extending wire element 27 between the transverse wire elements 30a, 30b. As in the previous form of the invention, the bracket 45 includes a flange 49 that extends in front of the reinforcing element 31 and thereafter rearwardly and has hooks 60 formed thereon.
In the form of the invention shown in FIGS. 9-11, the bracket 51 comprises two elements 52, 53 welded to one another. Element 52 has vertically spaced loop portions 54, 55 that encircle the upper and lower longitudinally extending wire elements 27 of the back of the basket. Element 53 includes the flange portion 56 that extends in front of the reinforcing member 31 and thereafter rearwardly and has the hooks 57 formed thereon. In this form, the spacer means is formed by a longitudinally extending wire rod 58 that is fixed to the back portions of reinforcing members 31.
