Int. Cl. 1365b 1/04 US. Cl. 141392 7 Claims ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The present invention relates to a filling nose for supplying liquid in a tank, particularly inflammable liquids, such as petrol in oil-tank trucks, so as to automatically reduce the delivery at the beginning of filling.
It is known that charges of static electricity accumulated especially by motor-fuels have very serious dangers when the liquid is introduced into an empty tank because of the flow speed on the bottom walls. It is thus necessary to reduce the delivery at the beginning of filling, until the bottom end of the connecting member is covered by a certain quantity of liquid corresponding to a level of 40 centimetres in the tank, for instance. Beyond that level, we can consider that the delivery is sufliciently diluted not to have too great speeds.
The difliculty is generally overcome by means of devices enabling the predetermining of a certain volume or to measure a certain level. These devices are generally complicated.
The present invention seeks especially to solve this problem in an extremely simple manner.
The object of the invention is a filling nose for supplying liquid in a tank comprising a tube connected to a supply line for said liquid and the lower end thereof delivering said liquid in said tank on the bottom thereof, said tube further having at least one lateral aperture, a limiting delivery member located in said tube and rigidly connected therewith between the lower end of said tube and said aperture, one valve provided to close said aperture, a floating member mounted outside said tube and guiding means associated therewith and carried by said tube, said floating member being connected to said valve for its control whereby said aperture is closed when the liquid begins to be supplied in said tank through said tube then progressively uncovered when the liquid reaches a level for which said floating member is actuated so as to increase the delivery of the liquid.
The invention also has the object of a form embodiment particularly adapted to large dimensioned filling devices. In the case of large deliveries, the ascensional movement of the float is perturbed by the flow of the liquid through the apertures made in the filling nose.
The invention proposes to eliminate this disadvantage without the necessity of using voluminous floats. To this end, it provides for a certain number of means by which the opening of the above-mentioned apertures is not only caused by the ascensional force of the float, but also by an energy taken from the liquid itself.
Other characteristics of the invention will be revealed in the following description, given in connection with the accompanying drawings, which are cited as non-restrictive examples.
FIG. 1 shows diagrammatically the bottom part of the filling nose made according to a first form of the inventron.
FIG. 2 shows, also diagrammatically, the bottom part of the filling nose made according to a second form of the invention.
In FIG. 1, we see a tube 1 forming the bottom part of the filling nose. This tube 1 rests by its bevelled end 2 on the bottom of the tank. Inside this tube a frustoconical insert 3 is housed Whose bottom part connects with the section of the end 2, the top part comprising a collar 4. Said collar 4 enables the delivery to be limited, while the insert 3 reduces speed between the collar 4 and the end 2. The tube 1 is also surrounded by a jacket 8 of perforated steel sheeting, for instance, inside of which is an annular float 5 surrounding the tube 1. The travel of said float is limited by stops 9 and 10 fixed on the jacket 8. The float 5 is rigidly connected to an arcuate panel 6, which, according to the level of the liquid, opens or closes apertures 7 made near the base of the tube 1.
When the filling of the tank begins, the apertures 7 are closed and the liquid accumulates at the base of the tube 1. When the liquid is sufiiciently high, the float rises, carrying along the panel 6 which uncovers the apertures 7. The delivery which, up till then, was limited by the collar 4, is increased by the flow of the liquid around the insert 3, the liquid then escaping through the apertures 7. The jacket 8 also has the advantage of protecting the float when the connecting member is inserted in the tank.
Another embodiment adapted for large deliveries is represented in FIG. 2, where reference numerals 1 to 9 designate the same parts as those shown in FIG. 1.
The panel 6 closing the apertures 7 is rigidly connected to a cylinder 11 which slides vertically on an annular member 20 outsidely integral with said tube 1. Two Washers 12 and 13 ensure the seal-tightness of the chamber 19 comprised between the tube 1 and cylinder 11. Said chamber 19 is put into communication with the inside of the tube 1 by means of piping 17 whose orifice is placed facing the flow of liquid to the interior of said tube 1. The chamber 19 is also put into communication with the outside air by means of an orifice 15. This orifice made in the top part of the cylinder 11 can be closed by the flap valve 14 returned to its seating by the spring 16. The passage section of the orifice 15 is, by its construction, greater than that of the orifice of the piping 17. A recoil spring 18 normally holds the cylinder 11 connected to the panel 6, in a low position, the apertures 7 then being closed.
During the filling operation, the float 5 rests on the end of the valve 14 and, compressing the spring 16, uncovers the orifice 15. The liquid under pressure admitted into the chamber 19 through the piping 17, is easily evacuated through the larger section orifice 15. When the level of the liquid reaches the float 5, said float rises. The flap valve 14, Ietumed by the spring 16, closes the orifice 15, and the pressure increases in the chamber 19. Under the effect of this pressure, the cylinder 11 moves upwards carrying along the valve 6 which uncovers the apertures 7, and the delivery of liquid is thus increased.
The number of orifices 15 and springs 18 may be of any figure, although only one orifice 15 and one spring 18 are shown in the figure. According to one form of embodiment of the invention, three orifices 15 are provided at on the top part of the cylinder 11, and three springs 18 intercalated between said orifices.
I claim:
1. A filling nose for supplying liquid in a tank comprising a tube connected to a supply line for said liquid and the lower end thereof delivering said liquid in said tank on the bottom thereof, said tube further having at least one lateral aperture, a limiting delivery member located in said tube and rigidly connected therewith between the lower end of said tube and said aperture, one valve provided to close said aperture, a floating member mounted outside said tube and guiding means associated therewith and carried by said tube, said floating member being connected to said valve for its control whereby said aperture is closed when the liquid begins to be supplied in said tank through said tube then progressively uncovered when the liquid reaches a level for which said floating member is actuated so as to increase the delivery of the liquid.
2. A filling nose as set forth in claim 1 comprising further a perforated jacket surrounding both said tube and said floating member whereby said floating member is guided between said tube and said jacket.
3. A filling nose as set forth in claim 2, comprising further stops provided at the ends of said jacket and carried thereby to limit the travel of said floating member.
4. A filling nose as set forth in claim 1, in which said valve comprises an arcuate panel partly at least surrounding the tube to progressively uncover said aperture, said panel being rigidly connected to said floating member.

A filling nose as set forth in claim 1, in which said limiting delivery member comprises a frusto-conical tubular member inserted inside said tube with the greater base thereof of same diameter as said tube connected therewith at a level beneath said aperture whereby liquid in said tube is compelled to pass through the small opening of said frusto-conical tubular member to be delivered in said tank thus reducing delivery of liquid.

A filling nose as set forth in claim 1, in which further an annular member is provided outside said tube to be integral therewith at a distance above said aperture .4 and beneath said fioating member, said filling nose further comprising an outer cylinder slidably mounted on said annular member and having an annular top portion bearing against said tube whereby a variable volume chamber is delimited by said outer cylinder and tube between said annular member and said annular top portion, a spring provided to urge said annular top portion towards said annular member, a spring urged flap valve provided in said annular top portion to be operated by said floating member when the level of liquid does not reach said floating member, a calibrated duct carried by said tube and provided for communication between said tube and said chamber for progressively filling said chamber with liquid when liquid reaches a level for which said floating member is raised thus causing closing of said flap valve then further causing progressive raising of said cylinder, an annular panel constituting said valve controlling said aperture and rigidly connected to said cylinder whereby said panel is actuated by said cylinder to progressively uncover said aperture when said chamber is progressively filled with liquid coming from said tube thus allowing passage of liquid from said tube to said tank through said aperture without passing through said limiting delivering member.
7. A filling nose as set forth in claim 6, comprising further stop members provided on said cylinder to limit the travel thereof in both directions.
