A9 David E. Benson United States Patent 3,495,432 FLARING TOOL David E. Benson, Rte. 3, Box 166, Belvidere, Ill. 61008 Filed June 12, 1967, Ser. No. 645,113 Int. Cl. B21d 39/12 U.S. Cl. 72-317 6 Claims ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE This device has a number of spaced apart, slidable segments within a disk which will accommodate the various standard tube sizes which are to be flared. The main body of the device is disk shaped in order that a pair of arms containing a pivotable lever may be rotated to the proper diameter opening so that a tube may be inserted and flared by a conical flaring end of a screw attached to a tool support at the center of the disk. This tool serves to expedite flaring operations because it allows a tube to be flared in a very quick manner.
This invention relates to flaring tool device and more particularly to an improved flaring tool.
It is therefore the main purpose of this invention to provide a flaring tool which will accommodate a plurality of popular tube diameters and will have an angle member serving as a locking detent against any one of the plurality of segments which are slideable within openings equally spaced apart through the main body of the structure.
Another object of this invention is to provide a flaring tool which will have a tool support of L-shaped configuration which is secured to the center of the disk by nut fastener means, the tool support member threadingly receiving a bolt having a T-bar handle at one end and having a conical flaring end at its other providing a means of bearing against the end of the tubing and flaring it to its proper shape.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent with a consideration of the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing wherein a satisfactory embodiment of the invention is shown. However, it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the details disclosed but includes all variations and modifications as fall within the spirit of the invention and the scope of the appended claims.
In the drawing:
FIGURE 1 is a plan view of the present invention shown partly broken away; and
FIGURE 2 is an end view of FIGURE 1.
According to this invention, a flaring tool is provided with a circular disk 11 made of metal which slideably accommodates a plurality of spaced apart segments 12 which during a flaring operation are closed upon the work to be flared which hereinafter will be described. A pair of hollow arms 13, one on either side of disk 12 are secured by a nut fastener 14 which is threaded upon the threaded end of tool support 15 which extends through the center of disk 11. Tool support 15 is L-shaped in configuration and is provided with an internally threaded opening 15' which threads onto bolt 16. Bolt 16 is provided with a conically configurated flaring end 17 which flares the tubing. The other end of bolt 16 is provided with a speed-bar handle 18 which serves as a handle means for rotating bolt 16 in order to flare the ends of a piece of tubing. An arcuately configurated lever 12 is positioned between arms 13 and secured slideably to arms 13 by pins 20. Openings 21 are spaced apart and are of 3,495,432 Patented Feb. 17, 1970 various diameters to accommodate their associated diameter tube to be flared and each of Openings 21 are visible through opening 22 of arms 13. When arms 13 are rotated to the various positions for flaring tubes received within openings 21. A depression 23 of conical configuration on segments 12 provides locking detent means for arms 13 when the tongue 24 of lever 19 is rotated into position by lever 19. Segments 12 are slideable on set screws 25 which are secured within disk 11 and segments are slideable within the openings 26. Segments 12 are provided within an outside rail portion 27 which is slideably received within groove 28 in order to keep segments 12 proper aligned within openings 26.
It will be noted that the L-shaped tool support member is provided with a shoulder 29 to prevent disk 11 from being slideable upon tool support 15.
In use, the tubing (not shown) is placed into opening 21 with lever 19 close to the outer periphery of disk 11 which will lock arms 13 into position by means of the tongue 24 being received within depression 23 of segment 12. The speed-bar 18 is rotated until the conical flaring end 17 of bolt 16 flares the end of the tube, after which lever 19 is moved outwards and away from the disk 11 by pivoting it upon pin 20 which releases the tongue 24 from depression 23 of segment 12. The segment 12 is then urged outwards and away from the opening 21 to allow the removal of the finished flared tube.
After counter-rotating the bolt 16 away from the tube, arms 13 may be placed into another diameter opening 21 to accommodate its associated tube size for flaring.
What I now claim is:
1. A tube flaring tool comprising, in combination, a flat support member, a number of segments slidably mounted about the periphery of said member and movable to provide passages through said member to accommodate various sizes of tubes, a pair of parallel elongated arms, said arms being spaced apart and positioned on opposite sides of said member, one end of each arm being pivotally attached to said member, said arms extending beyond the periphery of said member with the other ends of said arms being joined together so that said arms may be rotated in unison about the periphery of said support, locking means connected to said arms for selectively looking a segment to hold a tube to be flared, a support pivotally connected to and extending from one side of said member, a threaded bolt having a conical tip for flaring the tubes, said bolt being threadably connected to said support for movement toward and away from said member, and means for rotating said bolt, whereby the end portion of the tube may be inserted through said member, locked in place, and flared by swinging said support to locate said bolt with respect to the tube and then moving said tip into the end portion of the tube.
2. The combination according to claim 1, wherein said segments of said disk of said tool are slideable Within openings spaced apart along side of said disk and said segments are provided with extending rails, said rails being received within accommodating groove within the walls of said opening receiving said segment and said segments freely received a pair of spaced apart bolts which are threadingly received within said disk, thus allowing said segments to be guided inwards and outwards to encompass a tube to be flared and a semi-circular depression in said segment mate to a similar depression in said disk when said segment is fully positioned toward the center of said disk.
3. The combination according to claim 2 wherein said arm carrying said lever is secured one on either side of said disk by means of a nut fastener threaded on to the externally threaded end of said L-shaped tool support and shoulder means provided on said L-shaped tool support prevents said disk from being forced too far upon said tool support.
4. The combination according to claim 3 wherein said locking means includes a lever positioned between said other ends of said arms and pivotally connected to said arms, depressions on said segments and a tongue on said lever movable into engagement with a selected one of said depressions to lock said segments and position said arms.
5. The combination according to claim 1 wherein said arms have aligned holes extending therethrough said holes being alignable with said passages in said member by rotating said arms whereby the tube to be flared may be inserted through said arms and locked in said support.
6. The combination according to claim 1 in which said UNITED STATES PATENTS 8/1951 Wilks et al. 72 317 9/1963 Iskyan 72317 CHARLES W. LANHAM, Primary Examiner B. J. MUSTAIKIS, Assistant Examiner
