HOISTING DEVICE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 349,538, dated September 21, 1886.

Application filed March 2, 1886. Serial No. 1 3,746. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Beit known that I, LORENZO D. SPRAGG, a citizen of the United States, and aresident of Marion, in the county of Marion and State of Ohio, havein vented certain new and usefulImprovements in Hoisting Devices; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable other skilled in the art to which itappertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in to clamp it when the hoisting-rope is not pulled, and in which the weight of the object being hoisted will draw upon the hoistingrope against the end of the clamping-lever, forcing it down against the rope, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, the letter A indicates a frame, having two pulleys, B and O, journaled in its two ends, and having 'a bail or loop,D, at its upper end, into which a fastening-hook, E, or other means of fastening the. frame, may be inserted.

The hoisting-ropeF passes over the pulleys in the frame and over the loose pulley-block G, which is provided with two sheaves, H H, the hoisting portion of the rope depending from the pulley B overthe outer side of the same, the rope passing from the inner edge of this pulley down under one sheave of the loose block thereupon over the other pulley or sheave in the frame, and again under the other sheave in the loose block, whereupon the end is secured to an eye, I, at the lower end of a rod, J, pivoted to the inner arm of the brake-lever K, which is pivoted between the sides of the frame, in the upper portion of the same.

The inner end of the brake-lever or clamping-lever has a round notch or recess, L, enabling it to bear around the side of the hoisting-rope, the said end bearing against the portion of the rope which-passes over the upper and inner portion of the periphery of the sheave B, and the outer end of the outer arm of the lever has a rope, M, secured to it, by means of which rope theinner end of the lever may be raised.

\Vhen hoisting,the outer arm of the lever is drawn down by means of the rope attached to it, allowing the hoistingrope to pass freely over the sheaves, andthe rope, passing upward over the upper and inner portion of the periphery of the sheave, will naturally raise the clamping inner end of the lever against the weight of the object being hoisted; but when the hoisting is stopped and the rope of the lever released the inner end of the lever will be drawn down upon the hoisting-rope and clamp it, preventing it from passing back over the pulley, and consequently preventing the object being raised from being lowered,and the strain lever will furthermore serve to draw the clamping-lever down upon the rope.

\Vhen the object is to be lowered,t he clamping-lever must be released, and may be held ready to descend upon the rope if the object descends with too much v'elocity,stopping the descent.

In this manner it will be seen that this apparatus will prevent any accident from happening in allowing the hoistingrope to go while an objectis being hoisted, as the weight of the object will immediately stop the descent of the object.

Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- 1. In a hoisting device, the combination of a pulley or sheave, a loose pulley-block, a clamping-lever havingits end bearing toward the upper edge of the pulley, and a hoisting- -upon the rope against the recessed point of the rope passing over the sheave and over the loose block, and secured by one end to that end of the clamping-lever nearest to said sheave, as and for the purpose shown and set forth.

having two pulleys or sheaves journaled in its ends, a loose pulley-block, a lever pivoted in the frame and having its end recessed and projecting toward the upper and inner portion of one of the sheaves in the frame, and provided with a pending eyed rod, and a hoisting-rope secured to the pending eyed rod and passed under one sheave of the loose block and over one sheave of the frame, and again under a sheave of-the block and over the other sheave of the frame having the end of the lever bearing against it, as and for the purpose shown and set forth.

3. In a hoisting apparatus, the combination of a frame having means for suspending it, and having two pulleys or sheaves journaled in its ends, a loose pulley-block, a lever pivoted in the frame,and having its inner end recessed and projecting toward the upper and inner portion of one of the sheaves, and provided with a pending eyed rod, and having a rope attached to its outer end, and a hoisting-rope secured to the eyed rod and reeved over the sheaves in the frame and under the sheavesin the block, and having the inner end of thele- Ver bearing against it, as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
