UNITED STATES i PATENT OFFICE.
FRIEDRICH NEUHAUs, oF BELLEVILLE, ILLINOIS.
SPOOL-HOLDER FOR SEWINGMACHINES.k
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 349,446, dated September 21, 1886.
A lApplication filed December 8, 1885. Serial No. 185,052. (No model.) I
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRIEDRICH NEUHAUs, of Belleville, in the county of St. Clair and State of Illinois, haveinvented a new and Improved Spool-Holder for Sewing-Machines, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
' It frequently happens that more thread is unwound from the spools on sewing-machines than is required, and said thread coils around the pin on which the spool is held, and causes the thread to be drawn so taut as to bend and break the needle. l
The object of my inventionV is to provide a new and improved friction `device for the spoolp spindle, which device prevents the spool from revolving more rapidly than is required, and thus prevents the undue unwinding of the thread.
The invention consists in the construction and combination of parts and details, as will .be fully described and s et forth hereinafter,
and then pointed out in the claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a side view of the arm of a sewing-machine provided with my inventiomparts being broken out. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of my improved friction device. Fig.. 3 is a plan view of the same.
Between the two circular disks, A, each provided With a vcentral aperture, B, the wire C is held, the outer part of which is bent upward and has the eyeD formed on its end. On the upper surface of the upper disk A the piece E, of fabric, felt, or leather, or other suitable material that produces friction,is secured, and the said piece E is also'provided with a central aperture which registers with the apertures in the disks A. The spool G is placed on the pin H on the arm J of the sewing-machine, and on the projection F of the said arm the united disks are placed, the pin' H passing through the apertures in the disks andthe spool resting on the upper fabric layer, E, of vthe disks. The thread K from the spool is passed through the eye D, and is thus prevented from winding around the pin H. The fabric E, or analogous material in contact with the bottom of the spool, prevents the spool from revolving too freely, and thus prevents the thread from unwindin g more rapidly than is necessary. The disks A are made of pasteboard or other suitable material. l
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new-and desire to secure by Letters Patent- Y As an improved article of manufacture, a spool-holder for sewing-machines, consisting of the apertured disks A,the Wire C, held between ithe disks and having its upwardly-bent end provided with the -eye D, and the apertured fabric layer E,secured to the upper surface of the upper disk, the Whole being adapted to be placed upon the spool-spindle with the spool resting upon the fabric layer. as set forth.
