ENDLESS CARRIER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 349,346, dated September 21, 1886.

To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PETER GRATER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Florida, in the county of Henry and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Endless Carriers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in endless carriers; and it consists of the peculiar and novel construction and combination of parts, substantially as hereinafter fully set forth, and particularly pointed out in the claims,
My present invention is especially designed as an improvement upon the patent issued jointly to myself and Jacob Seibel on the 1st day of December, 1885, and numbered 331,703; and it has primarily for its object to provide an improved link or section of peculiar form having a socket or thimble, in which the transverse slats that connect the chains of the endless carriers are very firmly and rigidly held in place.

Referring to the drawings, in which like letters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the figures, A designates my improved endless carrier, which consists of parallel chains 13 and 0, connected by a series of transverse slats, D. Each of the chains B and O is made of a series of links, E, which are flexibly and detachably connected together, and to two oppositely-disposedv links or sections of the said chains 13 and 0 one of the slats D is provided, the free ends of which are rigidly secured in said links or sections and carried or supported thereby. The links or sections E are each made or cast in a single piece of metal for the purpose of simplicity and durability in construction and cheapness of manufacture, one of the links or sections being shown in perspective in the enlarged View, Fig. 2 of the drawings. The links or sections E each comprise an open frame, e, of square, rectangular, or other form, an outwardly extending or projecting hook, G, formed with Fig. 2 is a de-- one of the end bars of the frame, and a socket or thimble, H, also formed integral with the open frame, and arrangedat one side thereof and at right angles to the hook G. This socket or thiinble H has its inclosing-walls arranged at right angles to each other, so as to form a socket-chamber that is square or of any other desired or preferable form in cross-section, and in this socket of the link or section is fitted one end of the transverse slat D, which corresponds in shape and size in cross-section to that of the socket, so that the slat is very tightly and firmly fitted therein and held rigidly and immovably in place, whereby the slats are prevented from movement and becoming worn and loose. The inner side of the socket H is left open for the free admission of one end of the slat, and the opposite side is partially or wholly closed by vertical wall, It, that adjoins or forms one of the sides of the open frame 6 of the link or section. The inward movement of the slat is limited when it is fitted in the socket by coming in contact with the end wall, It, thereof, and the slat is prevented from accidental displacement or detachment from the socket by means of atransverse rivet or pin, J, that is passed through the walls of the socket and the end of the slat therein, and the ends of the rivet or pin are headed down or otherwise suitably secured in place. The socket and open frame are strengthened and braced by means of the side or lateral lugs, i, that are formed integral therewith, and the hook G of one section is fitted over and engages the open frame 0 of the section adjacent thereto, whereby the sections are pivotally or flexibly connected together to provide a flexible endless side, and as the adjacent sections or links of the two sides are connected together for simultaneous operation by and carry the slats D with them an endless carrier, A, of great strength and simplicity is provided.- I
The operation and manner of constructing my improved endless belt will be very readily understood from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, anddesire to secure by Letters Patent, is 1 1. A link or section for an endless carrier, formed of asingle piece of metal, and comprising an open frame, E, a hook, G, on one of the sides of the frame, and a socket, square in cross-section, arranged at right angles to the hook and forming one of the sides of the open frame, one end of the said socket being left open, and its other end closed or partially closed by a Wall, 71, in combination with the transverse slat passed into the open end of the socket and fitting snugly therein, and a pin or rivet passed through the soeket and the end of the slat, substantially as deseribed, for the purpose set i'orth.
