UNI ED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALVIN KEENE, OF MONTICELLO, MINNESOTA.
BED-SPRING.
ESPECIPICATION forming part ofLetters Patent N0. 349,310, dated September 21 1886.
Application filed January 5, 1886. Serial No. 187,645.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ALVIN F. KEENE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Monticello, in the county of Wright and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bed-Springs, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to bed-springs; and the novelty consists in the construction, arrangement, and combination of parts, substantially as hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a plan view ofa bed-spring embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail view of one of the double springs detached from the slats. Figs. 3 to 5, inclusive, represent modifications of my improvements.
Referring to the drawings, in which similar letters of reference denote similar parts, A designates the bed-spring, consisting of a series of coiled or helical springs, B, connected together at their tops, as shown. The springs B are preferably formed double-that is say, the ends of a piece of wire, I), formed into spiral springs, the coils ofone ofthe springs turning to the right, the otherto the left, and each coil having a downwa'rdly-proiecting point, I), to connect it to the bed-slats C. In practice I arrange the springs thus formed upon the slats in the manner shown at 1%, 2%, 3, and 4, Fig. 1, in which it will be seen that each alternate pair of springs B are looped together at the middle of their connecting-wire b at the points If, while the upper coils of each adjacent pair (see 2 3) are looped together at points h I continue the described arrangement of (No model.)
' springs throughout the length of each adjacent pair ofslats 5% 6% 7 8, and connect the springs of different slats together at points a between the slats 6 7. I) designates cross-slats secured to the opposite ends of the longitudinal slats C. to hold them together and properly spaced apart. (I designates staples ior connecting each ofthe end springs,B,with the cross-slat D.
In Fig. 3 I show a. modified form of arrangement of the springs B, in which each pair of springs 1 2 and 3 4 are looped together at if,
while the adjacent pair, 2 and 3, are connected together by loops b that extend from one to the other of the upper coils of said springs, as shown.
In Figs. 4 and 5 I show a modified form of the means for fastening the springs B to the slats, in which I provide each of said springs B at its lower end with downwardly-projecting portions 1), that engage the sides of the slat in addition to the central securing point or end, b, of the spring that passes through the slat.
Having thus described my invention, I claim A bed spring consisting of a series of double springs, B, each of said springs having oppo sitely-coilcdhclical springs formed at the ends of a single piece of wire, said springs B connected or looped together at points I)" b b, and two adjoining parallel slats, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ALVIN F. KEENE.
