DOUBLEDISTILLATI N APPARATUS WITH DISTILLAND LEVEL CONTROL Filed Jan. 29, 1968 4 Sheets-Sheet 4 A INVENTOR GUNTHER WEISS ATTORNEY5 United States Patent Int. Cl. B01d 3/42; C02b 1/04 US. Cl. 202-172 6 Claims ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A double-distilling apparatus comprises first and second boiler chambers having their vapor spaces connected to separate condenser chambers including separate condensing surfaces of a cooling medium passage and means conveying the condensed vapors from the first boiler chamber into the second boiler chamber. The coolant supplied to the condenser may be the liquid to be distilled, passing from the cooling medium passage into the first boiler chamber. The liquid to be distilled may be supplied to the lower portion of the first boiler medium through a tangential jet inlet to provide a self-cleaning effect through a constant level overflow device.
The invention relates to a double-distilling apparatus particularly suitable for the preparation of highly pure distilled water.
The distilling apparatus is characterized by the provision of first and second boiler chambers, a condenser including wall members defining a passage for a coolant medium and enclosure means defining with said wall members first and second condenser chambers, the first of the condenser chambers communicating with the vapor space of the first boiler chamber and the second condenser chamber communicating with the vapor space of the second boiler chamber and means provided a conduit for condensed liquid from the first condenser chamber to the second boiler chamber.
Particularly when the apparatus is used for the production of distilled water a stream of water in excess of the output of the still is passed serially through the condenser coolant passage and into the bottom of the first distillation chamber, preferably through a tangential jet inlet to maintain solids in suspension, and out of the chamber through a constant level overflow device to main tain a self-cleaning effect.
The principles of the invention will be more particularly described with reference to the accompanying drawings showing an illustrative embodiment of the invention.
In the drawings:
FIG. 1 is a view in elevation of an assembled doubledistilling apparatus embodying the principles of the invention;
FIG. 2a is sectional elevation in a larger scale than FIG. 1, of the upper portion of the assembly of FIG. 1, including the second stage boiler and the common condenser;
FIG. 2b is a sectional elevation, on the same scale as FIG. 2a, of the lower portion of the assembly of FIG. 1, including the first stage boiler and the joint section;
FIG. 3 is an enlarged cross-sectional view on line 33 of FIG. 1;
FIG. 4 is an enlarged cross-sectional view on line 4-4 of FIG. 20;
FIG. 5 is an enlarged cross-sectional view on line 5-5 of FIG. 2a;
FIG. 6 is an enlarged cross-sectional view on line 6 6 of FIG. 2b; and
FIG. 7 is an enlarged cross sectional view on line 7 7 of FIG. 2b.
3,489,649 Patented Jan. 13, 1970 ICC The operation of the device will be described with reference to the production of doubly-distilled water.
In the figures, 10 is the outer shell of the upper section of the assembly forming the body of the second stage boiler chamber and enclosure of the second stage condenser, and 11 is the outer shell of the lower section of the assembly forming the body of the first stage boiler chamber. l
The upper section of the assembly includes the first stage condenser chamber 12 surrounded by annular cool-ant passage 13 and the second stage condenser passage 14. The condenser chamber 12 also contains a cooling coil 15, the lower end of which is connected to the lower end of annular coolant passage 13.
Vapor from the first stage boiler in the lower section of the assembly is supplied to the first stage condenser chamber 12 through vapor line 16.
Condensate from the first stage condenser chamber 12 flows into the second stage boiler chamber 17 through the annular passage between vapor line 16 and downtake tube 18 which forms a vapor trap as soon as condensate begins to callect in the second stage boiler.
The second stage boiler is heated by a resistance coil 19 in quartz coil 20. Vapor from the second stage boiler passes through a layer of Raschig rings 21 supported on perforated plate 22 and into second stage condenser chamber 14. Condensate formed on the outer surface of annular passage 13 collects in annular tray 23 and may be drawn off through trap line 24.
Cooling fluid may be supplied to the condenser through inlet 25 and withdrawn through outlet 26. Openings 27 and 28 are pressure relief passages to condenser chambers 12 and 14 respectively.
Outlet 29 may be used to drain boiler chamber 17 or to withdraw singly distilled liquid as needed.
The first stage boiler, shown more particularly in FIG. 2b, is connected to the enlarged and flanged lower end of vapor line 16 by means ring clamp 30. The joint also serves to support vapor trap 31. Liquid to be distilled is supplied to the circular inlet chamber 32 of the boiler through tangential jet inlet 33 (FIG. 7) and the liquid level in the boiler is maintained by constant level overflow 34 connected to outlet 35. When producing distilled water the cooling water from the condenser may be supplied to the first stage boiler by connecting condenser outlet 26 to inlet 33 and the stirring action of the tangential jet inlet 33 prevents the accumulation of solids in the first stage boiler.
The first stage boiler is heated by resistance coil 36 in quartz coil 37.
Substantially the entire assembly in the form shown in the drawing may advantageously be made of glass. The lower end of the first stage boiler is closed by a glass plug 38 making a ground joint with clean-out opening 39 or by closing opening 40 in the constant level overflow, a siphon effect may be caused to wash out the boiler and drain its contents.
Other materials of construction such as stainless steel may also be used particularly for stills of large capacity but for stills of moderate capacity, for example, 2 liters per hour of double distilled water the construction shown by way of example is highly suitable and economic.
Iclaim:
1. A double-distilling apparatus comprising first and second boiler chambers, a condenser including wall members defining a passage for a coolant medium and enclosure means defining with said wall members first and second condenser chambers, the first of said condenser chambers communicating with the vapor space of the first boiler chamber through a vapor line and the second of said condenser chambers communicating with the vapor space of the second boiler chamber, and means including a downtake tube coaxially disposed withrrespect to said vapor line to define therewith an annular conduit for transmitting condensed liquid from the first of said condenser chambers to the second boiler chamber.
2. A double-distilling apparatus as defined in claim 1 wherein the second boiler chamber is superimposed on the first boiler chamber and vapor conduit means connecting the vapor space of the first boiler chamber with the first condenser chamber passes through the second boiler chamber.
3. A double-distilling apparatus as defined in claim 2 wherein the condenser wall members define an annular passage for coolant medium, the inner external surface of the annular :passage providing a condensing surface of the first condenser chamber and the outer external surface of the annular passage providing a condensing surface of the second condensing chamber.
4. A double-distilling apparatus as defined in claim 1 wherein the first boiler chamber includes tangential jet liquid supply means connected to the liquid space of the boiler chamber.
5. A double-distilling apparatus as defined in claim 4 including a constant level overflow device connected to the liquid space of the first boiler chamber.
6. A double-distilling apparatus as defined in claim 4 including conduit means connecting the coolant outlet of the condenser to the jet liquid supply means whereby the liquid to be distilled may be used as the coolant medium.
