S. E. BALL.
COMBINED WORK TABLE AND BASKET. No. 348,373. Patented Aug. 31, 1886.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SARAH E. BALL, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
COMBINED WORK TABLE AND BASKET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 348,373, dated August 31, 1886.
Application filed April 30, 1886.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SARAH E. BALL, of Brooklyn, Kings county, and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Combination lVork Table and Basket; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and the letters of reference marked thereon, forming a part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 represents a side view of my combination work table and basket ready for use. Fig. 2 represents a side view of the same structure, a portion thereof being shown in section, as will be hereinafter more fully described. Fig. 3 represents a top or plan view with top cushion removed, and a portion of the basket broken away, as will be hereinafter more fully described; and Fig. i represents a section of the standard part below the basket and above the leg-fastening plate, as will be hereinafter more fully described.
The object of my present invention has been to provide a convenient, compact, and desirable combined work table and basket for ladies use, and that, too, in such combined form and construction as to render it an article of ornament as well as of great practical utility, while at the same timeit can be readily taken apart and packed up in a compact manner and carried in an ordinary trunk.
To enable those skill in the art to which my invention belongs, I will proceed to describe the same more in detail.
In the drawings, the part marked A is the main supportirig-standard, provided with a top spindle, B, which rises from the shoulder on hub part 0, and upon which spindle is fitted to turn the thread-spool and button-case D, the latter having a central tubular vertical socket-piece, E, which fits upon the spindle B, as fully shown in Fig. 2. The bottom of case D rests on the top of shoulder O, and said case is formed by an outer rim, G, the bottom of which rim fits in a groove, (1, in the outer edge of the bottom, while the upper edge of rim G fits in a groove, 1), in the under side of the top H. The top H is upholstered to form a cushion, I, for the reception of pins and needles. In this instance the wood bot- Serial No. 200,747. (No model.)
tom J of the cushion is held to the top II by screws 0 c. The edge of the velvet or cloth cover K, which holds the stuffing L in place, is fastened to the under side of cushion-bottom J, and thereby is held securely in place between cushion-bottom J, and top H, by means of screws 0 0; but any other suitable mode of fastening may be adopted.
From the top of spindle B projects a screw, 9, to receive the thumb-nut O, which screws down upon the top of spindle B, thereby preventing case D from coming off, while at the same time the case is free to turn.
Case D is provided with an inner circular division-rim, M, and the space M, between the outer and inner rims, is filled with standards N, for the thread and silk spools 0, there being a thread-eye, F, through the outer rim, opposite each spool, for the passage of the thread or silk, and on the outer side, close to each eye, is to be placed or fixed the different numbers of the thread, and letters may be placed to designate the different sizes of silk.
If preferred, the case may be made large enough to contain two full sets of thread and silk, so that it will not be necessary to turn the case but slightly to reach any desired thread.
The inner space, N, forms a convenient receptacle for buttons and other articles.
Upon the standard A are arranged hooks L, upon which to hang shears and scissors.
A basket, 1?, is arranged upon the supporting-standard, the basket-bottom I having a hole in the center, through which the bottom end, A, of said standard passes, while in this instance a metal collar or plate, I is screwed to the under side of bottom P, with a hole for the passage of the lower end, A, of standard A, and also three notches to receive the upper ends of the three legs Q Q Q, and which leg ends are concaved out on their inner edges, '5, to fit the outer round surface of the standard end A. The upper ends of legs Q are also provided with shoulders to press against the plate Pfland with beveled ends 7;, to enter the slots or notches in said plate.
The lower end of the standard A is bored out, as seen at 7, and a metal screw-rod, 8, is inserted in the center, the lower end of said rod passing down some distance below the lower end ofsaid standard and having a screwthread cut thereon. Each leg Q is provided with a screw, on, on its inner upper edge, an illustration being shown in Fig. 2, the head of each screw projecting a short distance. Three slots, n, are made in the lower end, A, of the standard A, the width of the slots being sufficient to permit the bodies of the screws to slip up therein.
A button or thimble-piece, R, having a groove or socket, m, in its upper end and a central hole large enough to let rod 8 pass through freely, is fitted on the lower end of standard A, with its socket-flange passing up against the under edges, 0, of legs Q, a nut, S screwing onto the end of rod 8, thereby holding the legs Q Q Q, basket 1?, and standardA all firmly together, as illustrated in the drawings. I h
To put thedevices together, the operator takes standard Aand passes its lower end, A, down through the basket, then inserts the upper ends of the legs Q in their respective notches in the plate P and their screws m in their respective slots a, after which socket or thimble pieceR is slipped on and nut Sscrewed up, which brings the bottom of basket P up against the shoulder A,while the upper ends of legs Q Q Q will be held firmly between socket or thimble R, and the under side of the metal plate P. Case D is now placed in position upon the spindle B,-and thumb-nut 0 applied and turned down and the cushion-top put on,when the combined work table and basket is ready for use. When a flat, hard, smooth top is desired, it is only necessary to turn the cushion down with the top H up. In this form the device serves well for a whist or other stand or table.
In Fig. 2 case D and its cushioned top are shown in section, also the basket and lower part, A, of the supporting standard 'A, by which one of the legs is removed, and in Fig. 4, which is a View looking down, only portions of the legs are shown, their shoulders p being indicated in dotted lines, same figure.
In Fig.3 a portion of the basket is broken away. If preferred, the parts R and S may be made in one piece and of metal.
Those skilled in the art to which my invention belongs will appreciate the ease and simple manner in which my combined work table and basket can be put together and taken apart, and compactly put up for transportation or storage, case D fitting into the basket, while the legs, when taken off, can be tied up with supporting-standard A, thereby reducing the length one-half. It will be observed that only two fastenings have to be removed in separating the parts for packingviz., the top and bottom nuts--both of which a lady can remove with her fingers.
The work table and basket may be made of any desired material and upholstered in desired cloth, velvet, or silk, and the numbers, too, may be ofany desired material or stamp. If preferred, the wood-work may be veneered in one or many different kinds of wood.
I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination, with the slotted end A, of supporting-standard A, basket P, provided with notched metal plate P and detachable legs Q Q Q, screws m, screw-rod 8, thimble R, and nut S, substantially as described.
2 As an improved article of manufacture,a combined work table and basket consisting of a central supp'orti ng-standard, A, slotted at its lower end, and having a spindle, B, screw '9, and nut O at its upper end for supporting the upholstered spool, silk, and thread-case D, basket 1?, clamped in position against shoulder A on standard A by the detachable legs Q, and nut S on screw-rod 8, all substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
