UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JULIA B. FRENCH, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
TUB OR TANK FOR TOILET, LAUNDRY, AND REFRIGERATING PURPOSES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 348,321, dated August 31, 1886.
Application filed May 21, 1885. Serial No.166,329. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J ULIA B. FRENCH, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tubs or Tanks for Toilet, Laundry, and Refrigerating Purposes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The purpose of this invention is to render a combined wash and bath tub of the nature set forth in Letters Patent of the United States granted to me May 5, 1885, No. 317,333, when not in use for the purpose therein named, capable of use as a refrigerating chamber or chambers; and it consists in the combination, with a tank or vessel adapted to receive a re movable partition or partitions to divide said vessel into two or more compartments, of one or more receptacles or chambers which are adapted to be placedin and removed from the vessel, or one or more divisions thereof, and to receive a refrigerating material or compound and articles to be kept cool and dry, and otherwise, all in such a manner as is desirable and necessary in a refrigerating-chamber, substantially as hereinafter described and shown.
In the accompanying plate of drawings, Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical section ofa tub or tank of the character named provided with a removable refrigerating-chamber, in accordance with the present invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical cross-section of Fig. 1 through the refrigerating-chamber. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the removable refrigeratingchamber with parts in transverse section.
In the drawings, A represents the tub or tank of the character herein above mentioned, and B the removable partition dividing the tub or tank in its length into two compartments.
C represents a supplemental tank or receptacle suitably formed to closely fit one compartment of the tub A. This tank C at its top side has a hinged lid, D, provided with a hinged handle, a, for convenience in raising the lid. This tank at its upper side and at one end has a shallow pan, E, for receiving ice or other refrigerant, and an opening, I), provided with a pipe, F, leading through an opening, (I, in the bottom of the tub A, (which is preferably the discharge-opening for emptying the tub of its contents when the refrigerating-chamber is removed and the tub filled with water, &c.,) and at its end suitably trapped, as at f, by which a water seal is formed, preventing entrance of air into the chamber through the pipe F.
G represents lugs or projections on the opposite inner sides of the removable refrigerating-chamber, and these projections are for the support of shelves H, which preferably are arranged as shown, several in number, and separated from each other, thus affording free circulation of air within the chamber, and the freedom of circulation of air within the refrigerating-chamber may be further increased by providing the shelves with perforations.
\Vhile the refrigerating-chamber is shown as occupying one compartment or division of the tub formed by the insertiontherein of the partition B, it may be made to occupy the whole space of the tub, the partition being removed; or more than one refrigeratingchamber may be placed within the tub, if desired. When the tub or tank is to be used for the other purposes of which it is capable, the refrigerating chamber or attachment is to be removed and suitably disposed elsewhere while the tub or tank is being used for laundry or bathing purposes, which is a very small amount of time compared with the time the refrigerating-chamber would be allowed to remain in the tank proper.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- 1. In combination with a tub or tank pro vided with a removable partition or partitions, by which it is adapted for use either as a bath or wash tub, aremovable refrigerating-chamber, C, adapted to be placedi n the tub or tank, substantially as described.
2. In combination with a tub or tank provided with a removable partition or partitions, by which it is adapted for use either as a wash or bath tub, a removable refrigerating-chamber, C, adapted to be placed in said tub or tank, which is provided with an ice-receptacle, E, a drip-pipe, F, and shelves H, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JULIA B. FRENCH.
