' BPBOI PIGA'I'I ON forming part of Letters Patent Ito. 348,221, dated August 31. 1886.
application illedMnrch 22, 1880.
To all whom it may concern:
. Be it known that I, SIDNEY D. KING, of
Pittstou, in the county of Luzerne and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car-Trucks; and
I do hereby declare the following to be a full,
clear, and exact description of the invention,
such as will enable others skilled in the art towhich it appertains to make and use the to same.
'Myinvention relates ear-trucks. g
Hitherto it-has been customary to provide the bcarihg-bcar'n. of a car-truck witha pair :5 of trusses, one on either side, sccurel ast-' ened near the ends-of theupper side and struug'overa small depending saddle midway between theeuds. Thissaddlc has generally been (miistructrd of such thickness or depth that it would notinterfere with'the free action of the'spring by striking against the lowerparallel support on which the springs are located.
The object of my presentinvention is to 'furthc'r stretgthen' the upper support by bringing the trusses to a more nearly vertical.
position. I
With this end in view myinvention con sists in a truss-saddle secured to the bearingbeam and'ada ited to span the parallel supporting-beard; I death it. v
My invention further consists in certain features of construction and combinations of parts, as Willi]!!! hereinafter fidIydescribed, and pointcdfout intb'e clainis.
In the accompanying drawings, Figurel is I a view in perspective of a car-truck, showing myiniprovemeut in proper adjustment. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal-scction,
A represents-airordinary set of end braces or supports on near-truck carrying the boxes 1%, iii-which are journaled the ends of the axles 15. The cross-beams 0 and U extend across from one end brace to the other, with their ends projecting through the central portion of said end braces. The lower one, U, rests solidly on the lower part of the end provided at its ends with to an improvement in springs I). v
Above thebearnO', and in the same plane 'tially asset forth.
ou. the springs, and the truss-saddle rigidly Serial No. 196,291. (No, model.) a
tween the uprights E and E of the end braces, 5 5- A. The beam 0 is provided with a-pair of,
trusses, F, one on either side, which are firmly secured to the plates I and I at the ends'of the beam 0, and extend therefrom under the depending arms G of a spanning-saddle, G. g The saddle G issecu'red to-the underside of the beam (3, and the depending branches 6'.
thereof embmeethe sides of the beam 0' and guide the beam C in its movements. It may be made of any desired lengths The greater the length of the branches of the saddle the a more direct is the weight pressin on central point, 1!, transferred to the en s hot the 1- support. .By extending the .trusscs to the' positionindicated in Fig. 1, the transverse strain on the trusses is converted more nearly into. a longitudinal. strain, and therefore is much lessliabie to bend or break the support,
It isaevident that slight changesmi'g'ht be resorted to in the form and arrangementof i;
the several partsldeseribed without departing from the spirit audscope of; ray-invention; hence I do not wish to lim'it myself strictly to the construction herein set forth; but, IIaving fully described-my invention, what My I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- I I r 1. In a ear-truck, the, combination, with side supports and axles, of the lower beam 'carryingl'springs', the upper beam resting on said springs, and a truss-saddle rigidly.se-
cured to the upper beamaud projecting below j r the upper surface of the lower beam, substam 2. In a car-truck, the combination, with 9d a side supports and axles jouru'aled tlierein',-of the lower beam, springs resting on the upper surface of said beam, the upper beam resting 'seeuredlto the upper beam ata point between 5 the wheels and projecting. below the upper surface of the lower beam on both sides there-; of, substontiallyasset forth. s
8. In a. ear-truck, he combination, with side supports-and sales journsled thereon, of roe the lower beam, springs resting thereon, the I 'n testimony whereof-I have signed this upper beam resting d n thesprings', the trussspecification in the presence of two subscribsadd1e, the'10wer ends of which project below ing witnesses.
the upper surface of the lower beam, and the SIDNEY 1). KING. 5 truss-rods secured to the upper beam and Witnesses:
passing under the lower ends of the truss- \VILLIAM SAURMAN,
saddle, substantially as setforth. 4 AN'IH'ONY ITORA N.
