MACHINE FOR MAKING SLAT-AND-WI RE FENCES.

Be itknown that I, GORDON \V. BEGOLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at A11- gusta, (Stony Creek P. 0..) in the county of \Vashtenaw and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Making Slat-and-YVire Fences; and I do declare the following to be a full,clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

The invention will first be described in connection with what is necessary to a full understanding thereof, and then pointed out in the claim.

Figure 1 of the drawings is a side elevation of the machine; Fig. 2, a front view of the same; Fig. 3, an end elevation, and Fig. 4 a vertical sectional elevation of the frame which supports the pulley-frame and carries the stop mechanism.

In the drawings, A represents the initial fence-post, and A the others which succeed; B, the slats; O, the wires, and D the draft-bar, connected by a wire or rope, E, with a.suitable windlas s mechanism to hold the wires at a proper tension.

F is abar made in the form of a crank-shaft, and having the median handle, f. On each end of this bar is rigidly tenoned the frame G, having bifurcations g 9, between which is fixed a pivot, g, and on the inside of one of these bifurcations a fast stop-bar,f, which may be integral with frame G.

H is a bar having the branches h h, which turn on pivot g, slide thereon, and are springheld under the stop-barf. The spring I is of U form, and has one arm fastened to the said pivot on the outside of branches h h, while the other loosely clasps said pivot, so as to slide upon it, and thus press said branches h under the stop-bar. On the other end of the bar H are rigidly attached the pulleyframes J and their pulleys f f.

The operation is as follows: The machine is placed between the wires so that one wire of each pair shall rest in a groove of the small wheels and on the outside thereof. The tension produced by thewindlass mechanism will retain the wires securely in position, while the pulleys ff render the movement of the machine over the wires very easy. The bar F is cranked to bring the handlef in alignment with the wires, so that the machine may suffer no lateral displacement, and thus clamp the wires. The machine is first placed with one of the movable parts H turned in upon the bar F, and the other turned out at full length. A picket is placed between the post and bar F. The operator seizes the handle f, and by a slight side motion removes the bar H from the stop-barf, and presses the bar F downwardly. This turns out the bar H that was in,a'nd turns in the one that was out. This motion reverses the wires. The springs lock the bars H, and the wires are prevented from springing back. A new picket is now dropped into position, and so the operation goes on as the machine is moved along the wires. In this way the pickets or slats are rapidly set and fastened. There are three motionsone along the wires, a slight side motion to unlock the bars H, and the alternate up-and-down motion by which the wires are reversed to take in the new picket or slat.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to protect by Letters Patent, is-

The combination of the bar F, the bifurcated frames G G, having the pivot g and inside stop-bar, f the bibranched bars H H, turning on pivot g and sliding thereon, the springs I, adapted to press the bars H under the stops, and the frames J, carrying pulleys f, to operate as and for the purpose specified.
