F16k 3 7/165 U.S. Cl. 137-269 3 Claims ABSTRACT F THE DISCLOSURE The housing of the valuve is provided with an insert forming a partition between the inow side and the outow side of the housing and at its circumference merges in an annular wall. Said wall at least at one side of the partition is constituted by bars extending in axial direction and projecting -with one of their ends into a ring of elastic material provided at the circumference of the partition. Said bars at their other end being supported in the adjacent end wall of the housing and flow passages being formed between said bars. The annular wall of the partition is surrounded by a sleeve-like diaphragm which at both ends is secured in the housing. At the outer side of the diaphagm a chamber is formed in which pressure uid may be admitted for urging the diaphragm on the annular wall.
This invention relates to a valve the housing of -which is provided `with an insert forming a partition between the inflow side and the outow side in the housing and at its circumference merges in an annular wall having on either side of the partition ow passages and being surrounded by a sleeve-like diaphragm which at both ends is secured in the housing and on the outer side of which a chamber is formed in which pressure fluid may be admitted as has been described in my U.S. Patent 2,818,880.
With said known valve the annular -wall of the insert extending on both sides of the partition constitutes an integral body with the partition and axial ribs are provided at the inner side of the annular wall and the flow passages extend unto said ribs. With said construction of the insert the passages are `obtained by removing material of the insert down to the ribs, but said construction has the drawback that it requires muchlabour and well rounded edges at the passages particularly at the inner side of the annular wall of the insert cannot be obtained.
The invention has for its object to improve said known valve and according to the invention the annular wall of the insert at least at one side of the partition is constituted by bars extending in axial direction and projecting with one of their ends into a ring of elastic material provided at the circumference of the partition and said bars at their other end being supported in the adjacent end wall of the housing. As said bars do not require any working the manufacture of the insert is very simple and moreover the advantage is obtained that by adding or removing bars the passage area of the insert can be modified at will. As the bars may have a circular section no sharp edges are formed at the slots obtained between the bars, so that the flow conditions at the slots are very favourable. For the material of the bars not only metal but also a chemically resistant synthetic material may be used.
With a suitable embodiment of the valve according to the invention the partition is hollow and each side wall of the partition is united with the adjacent end piece of the housing an dthe elastic circumferential ring of the partition is clamped between-the side walls thereof.
The invention will be further described with reference to the accompanying drawing, showing three embodidrawing FIG. 1 is a longitudinal section of a valve according to the invention in closed position and FIG. 2 is a cross-sectional view of the valve taken on line II-II in FIG. 1.
FIGS. 3 and 4 each show half a longitudinal section of a valve according to a second and third embodiment respectively.
The housing of the valve consists of two end parts 11', and a more or less cylindrical intermediate part 2 and said parts being clamped together by clamping bolts 3 distributed along the circumference of the casing. The casing contains an insert constituting a partition between the inflow side and the outflow side of the casing and being provided at both sides with an annular Wall. Said partition consists of two halves 4, 4 which with the embodiment shown in FIGS. 1 and 2 each are united by ribs 5, 5 with the adjacent end part 1, 1 of the housing. The bolts 3 also serve to secure a diaphragm 7 in the housing and to this end the diaphragm is provided with flanges 8. A pressure uid is supplied to the outer side of the diaphragm 7 through one or more holes 9 whereby the diaphragm is forced inwards.
With the embodiment shown in FIGS. 1 and 2 the partition formed by the halves 4, 4 is embraced by an elastic ring 10 e.g. `of rubber and being clamped with the inwards projecting rim 11 between the halves 4, 4' also by the bolts 3. Bars '13 are inserted in circular recesses 12 at both side faces of the ring 10 and the other ends of said bars are supported in the recesses of ring 14 also consisting of elastic material e.g. rubber. The rings 14 are placed on a shoulder 15 of the adjacent end part 1 of the casing.
With the embodiment shown in FIG. 3 the bars 13 at the outflow side of the partition in the end part 1a' are united with adjacent half 4a of the partition. At the inow side of the partition 4a in the end part 1a several bars 13 are supported in the elastic circumferential ring 10 of the partition and the remaining bars 16' here also are united with the adjacent half 4a of the partition, so that they extend through the ring 10. Between both halves 4a, 4a' of the partition a sealing ring 16 is provided.
With the embodiment shown in FIG. 4 both halves 4a, 4a of the partition bet-Ween the end parts 1a, 1a are embraced by an elastic circumferential ring 10' in which at least certain of the bars 13 arranged at both sides of the partition are supported and the remaining bars 13 united with adjacent half 4a, 4a of the partition extend through the ring 10.
Both with the embodiment shown in FIG. 3 and that shown in FIG. 4 the clamping bolts 3 are located at the outer side of the intermediate part 2 of the housing.
In closed position of the valve as shown in the drawing the middle part of the diaphragm 7 is seated on the outer circumference of the elastic ring or rings 10', whereby an efficient seal of the diaphragm on the insert in closed position of the valve is secured.
What I claim is:
1. A valve comprising a housing which is provided with an insert forming a partition between the inflow side and the outflow side of the housing and at its circumference merges in an annular wall having on either side of the partition ow passages and being surrounded by a sleeve-like flexible diaphragm which at both ends is secured in the housing, the outer side of said diaphragm defining a wall of an expansible chamber in which pressure uid may be admitted to control the 4ilexing of said diaphragm and thereby control uid ow through said passages, the annular wall of the insert at least at one side of the partition being constituted by bars defining said passages and extending in an axial direction and projecting with one of their ends into a ring of elastic material provided at the circumference of the partition and said bars at their other end being supported in the adjacent end wall of the housing, at least some bars being removably mounted.
2. A valve as claimed in claim 1 wherein said partition is hollow and comprises abutting partition walls, and each side wall of the partition is united lwith the adjacent end piece of the housing and the elastic circumferential ring of the partition is clamped between said abutting partition walls.
3. A valve as claimed in claim 1 wherein certain of the bars at least at one side of the partition are united with said partition as a unitary structure.
