Repiscak, 2620 W. 100 Place, Chicago, Ill. 60642 Filed Aug. 3, 1967, Ser. No. 658,223 Int. Cl. A47f 13/06; B60r 1/06 U.S. Cl. 29419 1 Claim ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An extension handle with a hook assembly at one end for the purpose of allowing a truck driver to easily adjust a right side mirror of the truck while the driver remains seated in the drivers seat, the device being also practical for use to open and close the windows and door on the trucks right side.
This invention relates generally to pole hooks.
A principal object of the present invention is to provide a means whereby a truck driver may readily adjust the right side mirror of the truck without the necessity of leaving his seat while he is driving.
Another object of the present invention is to provide an arm extender which may be readily used by a truck driver while seated behind the driving wheel so as to open windows and the door upon the right side of the truck and to close the same without moving himself from his seat.
Yet a further object of the present invention is to provide an arm extender which will promote highway safety by allowing the truck driver to remain in a proper position behind the steering wheel while traveling yet at the same time adjusting windows and the rearview mirror on the right side of the vehicle.
Other objects of the present invention are to provide an arm extender which is simple in design, inexpensive to manufacture, rugged in construction, easy to use and efiicient in operation.
These and other objects will be readily evident upon a study of the following specification and the accompanying drawing wherein:
FIGURE 1 is a side elevation view of the present invention shown partly in cross-section; and
FIGURE 2 is a cross-sectional view taken on the line 22 of FIGURE 1.
Referring now to the drawing in detail, the reference numeral represents an arm extender, according to the present invention wherein there is an elongated handle 11 that is made preferably from wood such as is used for conventional tool handles, one end 12 of the handle providing a means for being grasped within the hands of an operator, and the opposite end 13 thereof having a hook unit 14, secured thereto.
The hook unit 14 includes a cylindrically configurated collar 15 having an opening 16 therewithin for receiving the end 13 of the handle. A rivet 17 extends through the handle end 13 and the opposite sides of the collar 15. Thus the hook unit is secured to the handle. A first hook member 18 is integrally formed with the collar, the hook member 18 comprising a tab that is bent as shown at 19, so as to form a leg 20 that extends parallel with the handle 11, the terminal end 21 of the leg 20 being pointed in the direction of the grasping end 12 of the handle 11. A second hook element 22 comprises a tab integrally formed with the collar, the tab extending at right angle to the collar as is shown by the leg 23 having a terminal ice end 28 that is slightly bent into the direction toward the grasping end 12 of the handle 11.
The hook unit also includes a fiat circular wall 25 over the end of the collar 15, the flat wall being in abutment with the terminal end of the handle 11.
In operative use the first hook element 18 may be used to open a vent window lock and close the same with a pull and twist motion. Thus the window latch may be opened and the window pushed outwardly. The hook element 19 may be used for opening a window, closing a door or adjusting the mirror on the right side of the vehicle. The arm extender may engage either side of the mirror for pulling or pushing the same. The hook element 22 can be used to crank the Window handle down by inserting the same behind the handle of the window and pulling and turning the same so as to operate the window upwardly or downwardly. To open the door the hook element is placed behind the handle and with a pull-twist motion the door handle will open and push out. To close the door, the hook element is placed behind the door handle and pulled shut. Thus there has been shown an improved method of operating the door, windows and mirror on the right side of the vehicle without the driver assuming any dangerous position while driving behind the wheel.
We claim:
1. In an arm extender, the combination of an elongated, cylindrical handle and a hook unit, said handle being made of wood and having a grasping end at one end thereof for being received within the hands of an operator, and the opposite end of said handle having said unit secured thereto, said hook unit comprising a collar that is received over the end of said handle, said collar including a cylindrical side wall having a circular end wall at one end edge thereof against which the terminal end of said handle is in abutment, said collar having openings diametrically apart, said end of said handle having said hook unit having a corresponding transverse opening extending therethrough for alignment with said openings in said collar, said openings of said handle and said hook unit receiving a rivet therethrough for rigid securement of said hook unit upon said handle, said hook unit including a pair of hook elements formed by tabs along the said one end edge of said collar having said circular end wall, one of said hook elements comprising said tab being bent to form a leg extending parallel with said handle and having a terminal end which points in the direction of the grasping end of said handle, said leg being in spaced relation with said cylindrical side wall of said collar, the other of said hook elements comprising a second hook element formed by said tab extending at right angle to the axis of said collar, said right angle tab forming a leg having a terminal end which is slightly turned into the direction of the grasping end of said handle.
