PAINT CAN ATTACHMENT RING WITH POURING LIP Filed Jan. 24, 1968 3,463,366 PAINT CAN ATTACHMENT RING WITH POURING LIP Francis D. Spencer, 5855 E. Fostoria St., Bell Gardens, Calif. 90201 Filed Jan. 24, 1968, Ser. No. 700,058 Int. Cl. B65d 47/40 U.S. Cl. 222-570 1 Claim ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE 'Paint is prevented from accumulating in the gutter of a paint can brim by an attachment ring having a depending skirt which carries a first annular shoulder adapted to engage the inner periphery of the brim on a first sized paint can and a second, thicker annular shoulder adapted to engage the inner periphery of the brim of a second sized paint can. The attachment ring includes a pouring lip facilitating the pouring of -paint from the paint can.
BACKGROUND lOF INVENTION The background of 4the invention will be set forth in two parts:
Field of the invention The present invention pertains generally to the field of paint can attachment rings and more particularly to an improved ring of the type disclosed in United States Patent No. 2,960,257.
Description of the prior art One example of a paint can attachment ring may be found in said Patent No. 2,960,257. The ring disclosed in this patent includes an annular body adapted to seat in the gutter of a paint can brim. This ring has the disadvantage that it will only t a paint can having a predetermined size and is not usable on a great many paint cans having a second size.
Another disadvantage resides in the fact that it is sometimes difficult to properly seat the annular body in the gutter.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION In view of the foregoing factors and conditions characteristic of paint can attachment rings, it is a primary object of the present invention to provide a new and useful paint can attachment ring not subject to the disadvantages enumerated above and having means adapting it to use on two different sizes of paint cans.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a paint can attachment ring of the type described having 'annular shoulder means engageable with the inner periphery of a paint can brim for preventing paint from accumulating in the gutter thereof during paint-pouring operations.
According to the present invention, a paint can attachment ring and pouring lip combination includes a depending skirt adapted to engage the inner periphery of the brim on -a first sized paint can and a second, thicker annular shoulder adapted to engage the inner periphery of the brim on a second sized paint can.
The device prevents the accumulation of paint in the gutter of a paint can brim and facilitates pouring paint from the can.
The features of the present invention which are believed to be novel are set forth with particularity in the appended claim. The present invention, both as to its organization and manner of use, together with further objects and advantages thereof, may best be understood United States Patent O 3,463,366 Patented Aug. 26, 1969 by reference to the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which like reference characters refer to like elements in the several views.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWING FIGURE 1 is a perspective View of a first embodiment of a paint can attachment ring and pouring lip of :the present invention;
FIGURE 2 is an enlarged, cross-sectional view taken along line 2 2 of FIGURE 1 and showing the device thereof in position on a paint can having a first predetermined size;
FIGURE 3 is an enlarged, partial cross-sectional view similar to FIGURE 2, but showing the device in position on a paint can having a second predetermined size; and
FIGURE 4 is a perspective view of second embodiment of a paint can attachment ring and pouring lip of the present invention.
DESCRIPTION OF THEPREFERRED EMBODIMENTS Referring again to the drawing and more particularly to FIGURES 13, a paint can attachment ring and pouring lip constituting a first embodiment of the present invention, generally designated 10, is shown in combination with a paint can 12 having a brim 14 comprising a sheet metal annular body. Can 12 includes an encompassing side wall`16 having an upper edge 20 provided with a bead 22, Brim 14 has an outer peripheral edge 24 provided with a rounded flange 26 clamped over bead 22. Brim 14 includes an encompassing side wall 28 depending from flange 26 inside side wall 16 of can 12 and having an annular, substantially horizontal shelf 30 provided at the lower end thereof. Shelf 30 extends inwardly from and is displaced below, flange 26 and merges into a depending annular gutter 32.
Gutter 32 has a depending side wall 3&4, a bottom wall 36 and an inner, vertical side wall 38. The side wall 38 rises above shelf 30 and carries a bead 40 at its upper end which is slightly below flange 26. Bead 40 includes a lower, annular edge 42 forming a slight shoulder with sidewall 38 for engaging a first annular rib 44 provided on an annular skirt 46, forming an integral part of attachment ring 10, to prevent paint from fiowing over bead 40 and into gutter 32 during paint-pouring operations. Skirt 46 includes a first vertical portion 48, a horizontal portion 50 and a second vertical portion 52. An annular shelf 54 extends outwardly from the upper edge S6 of the second vertical portion S2 and merges into pouring lip 58. A side wall 60 extends upwardly and slightly outwardly from she-lf S4 and includes an elevated portion 62 at the rear end of lip 58. Side wall 60 then diminishes from elevated portion 62 to shelf 54 at the front end of lip 58 to facilitate pouring paint from can 12. Shelf `54 extends over gutter 32 so that paint will not accumulate therein during paint-pouring operations.
The upper edge 64 of side wall 48 and the upper edge 56 of side wall 52 form suitable edges for wiping paint from a brush. This paint then returns to can 12 without entering gutter 32.
The rib 44 extends outwardly from the lower edge 66 of sidewall 52 and is adapted for use with cans having a first predetermined diameter. A second4 annularrib 68 extends outwardly from the first vertical portion 48 of skirt 46 and is adapted to `engage a bead 40a on a paint can 12a having a second predetermined diameter which is smaller than that of can 12. Thus, attachment ring 10 may be used with two different sizes of cans.
Referring to FIGURE 4, an attachment ring constituting a second embodiment of the present invention, generally designated 10a, may be identical to the device 10, except that a modiiied lip 58a is provided with a downwardly-directed front edge 70.
What is claimed is:
1. In combination with a paint can gutter including an inner vertical side Wall which carries a bead having a lower annular edge forming a slight shoulder with said inner vertical side wall, an attachment ring with pouring lip, comprising:
an annular skirt including first and second substantially vertical portions each having upper and lower edges and a substantially horizontal portion joining the upper edge of said iirst vertical portion to the lower edge of said second vertical portion;
an annular shelf extending outwardly from said upper edge of said second vertical portion, said annular shelf being positionable over said gutter in a substantially horizontal position when said annular skirt is disposed inside said paint can adjacent to `and parallel with said inner vertical side wall of said can;
a side wall extending upwardly from said annular shelf, said side Wall on said shelf and said shelf merging into a pouring lip, whereby said side wall encompasses all but a portion of said shelf.
a first annular rib extending outwardly from said rst vertical portion of said skirt; and
a second annular rib extending outwardly from said second vertical portion of said skirt, said first annular rib being adapted to engage said inner vertical side wall of said cam adjacent said slight shoulder in sealing relation therewith when said attachment ring is used on cans having an inner side wall of a first predetermined diameter and said second annular rib being adapted to engage said inner vertical side wall of said can adjacent said slight shoulder in sealing relation therewith when said attachment ring is used on cans having an inner side wall of a second predetermined diameter, said upper edges of said first and second vertical portions of said annular skirt comprising wiping edges for removing excess paint Ifrom a brush dipped into said can when said attachment ring is in position thereon.
