BEDS'IEADS OR THE LIKE Filed July 15, 1966 BY 2 z ATTORNEYS United States Patent 3,460,169 BEDSTEADS OR THE LIKE Maximilian Heller, 716-720 Seven Sisters Road, Tottenham, London, N. 15, England Filed July 15, 1966, Ser. No. 565,562 Int. Cl. A47c 19/00 US. Cl. 131 2 Claims ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A bedstead comprising a carrier frame and a mattress base carried thereby. The carrier frame comprises a pair of longitudinal side members connected at their ends. The carrier frames extend upwardly toward the central part thereof and the mattress base is supported at its ends by the narrow ends of said frame and at its middle by the summit of the upward extension of said side members.
This invention relates to improvements in bedsteads, it being understood that this term is taken to include couches, divans, settees or like furniture.
The object of the present invention is to provide a bedstead that lends itself to mass production and which features may be equally advantageously employed in single or double beds.
The basic principle of the idea underlying this invention is to obtain strong frames even when the structural material is sparingly used, and, furthermore, owing to a particular feature of the present invention said structural material may not be strong in itself and yet provide sturdy frames.
According to the present invention a bedstead or the like comprises a carrier frame and a mattress base, the latter being supported by said frame, the longitudinal side members of said frame extending in a single stretch to provide at the outer ends thereof an upright portion and a foundation portion which extends upwardly toward the center portion of the frame up to the level of the mattress base, said center portion constituting a solid bridge and an additional support for said mattress base.
This invention further comprises various features and forms of construction which will appear from the following description made with reference to the accompanying drawing which illustrates in perspective this invention by way of example and in which:
FIGURE 1 illustrates a couch-bed according to the invention;
FIGURE 2 shows a bedstead having a detachable mattress supporting frame; and
FIGURE 3 is another embodiment of the present invention.
The couch-bed depicted in FIGURE 1 shows a carrier frame comprising two longitudinal side members 12 spacedly attached adjacent the ends thereof by transversely extending cross rails 14. Each of the longitudinal side members 12 of the carrier frame 10 extend in a single stretch over the upright portions 16 and the foundation portion 18 which is raised in a sweep towards the center portion 20 of the carrier frame 10 up to a predetermined level. Said center portion constitutes a solid bridge and comprises, together with said cross rails 14, the upper surfaces of which are substantially co-planar with the upper surface of said center portion 20, support means for a mattress base 22. The upright portions 16 of frame 10 ice extend upwardly and outwardly thereby enabling the nesting or stacking of a plurality of carrier frames 10 when said frames are not in an assembled form, i.e. when said mattress base is detached from said frame. As indicated, at least one of said upright portions 16 can be elongated thereby providing a head framework (indicated in broken lines).
An important advantage of the structure of the instant invention resides in the upsweep of foundation portion 18 of the carrier frame 10 to provide additional support means for the mattress base 22. This structural arrangement provides a more structurally sound bedstead even though the structural material employed in the fabrication of the component parts thereof lacks desirable strength characteristics. A further advantage resulting from the lifting of the foundation portion 18 at the center portion of the carrier frame 10, with the lower part thereof merging into the upwardly and outwardly extending portion 16, is the provision of footlike means 24, which eliminates the necessity of providing separate leg means, although it will be recognized that, if desired, the carrier frame 10 can be fitted with such leg means. The bedstead of this invention can be made of any suitable material such as metal tubes, bent wood or plastic compositions.
FIGURE 2 illustrates a bedstead in which each of the upright portions 16 have extended portions to provide a head framework 26 and a foot framework 28. The mattress base 22 is detachably secured to the carrier frame 10 by securing means 30 such as nuts and bolts or any other conventional attachment means. The foundation portion 18 of the carrier frame 10 is shown to be raised to the level of the attachment means 30. The carrier frame 10 can also be provided with a backrest 32 (indicated in broken lines) thus transforming the bedstead into a settee.
FIGURE 3 represents a carrier frame 10 made of wide or narrow strip material which may consist of wood, laminated wood, metal, plastic compositions or the like. To each of the upright portions 16 of each longitudinal side member 12 there is secured bracket means 34 on which the end portions 36 of the mattress base 22 rests. The bracket means 34 are, preferably, detachably secured to the upright portions 16 so as to prevent interference with the stackability of carrier frames 10. Mattress base 22 can be made of wood, metal or similar rigid material and/or can be provided with a fixed or loose upholstery if desired as shown in broken lines. Also, if desired, the longitudinal side members 12 of a carrier frame 10 can be more rigidly interconnected by the provision of transversely extending bar member 38 secured between the center portions 20 of the carrier frame 10.
What I claim is:
1. A bedstead comprising a carrier frame and a mattress base carried thereby, said carrier frame comprising a pair of spacedly connected longitudinal side members, each of said side members being substantially W-shaped, at least one of the outwardly and upwardly extending portions of the W-shaped side members provided with an elongation to provide at least one of a head framework and a foot framework, a cross rail extending transversely of said bedstead and connecting corresponding outwardly and upwardly extending portions of the W-shaped side members to each other, the apices formed by the connection of the upwardly and inwardly extending portions of the W-shaped side members being substantially coplanar with means connected to the outwardly and upwardly extending portions of the W-shaped side members for supporting said mattress, and said mattress base being supported adjacent its ends by said means and adjacent its middle by said apices of said side members.
2. A bedstead according to claim 1 wherein said means connected to the outwardly and upwardly extending portions of the W-shaped side members extend therebetween to form said cross rails.
