KEIJIRO NAKAGAWA ATTORNEYS United States Patent O U.S. Cl. 19-234 7 Claims ABSTRACT F THE DISCLOSURE A cylinder comb for combing textiles, wherein a plurality of needles are first secured together in needle rows, as by securing the needles to a wire or metal band and soldering the base of the needles and wire or metal band, and are Subsequently placed in axially extending grooves in the exterior surface of `a helf-lap and secured in position in the grooves by a settable material, such as a synthetic resin. The secured together rows of needles may be prevented from outward radial movement with respect to the half-lap by positioning a wire in an axially extending recess adjacent the open edge of the groove in which the needle row is positioned with the wire being of such diameter as to extend partly out of the recess into the groove. Altematively the needle rows may be secured in the recess by means of enlarging the recesses at the bottom thereof and increasing the dimension of the needle rows at the bottom in which case the needle rows will be placed in the grooves from the end of the half-lap.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION Field of the invention The invention relates to combs and refers more specifically to a cylinder comb for combing textiles and the like, including a half-lap having a plurality of axially extending rows of radially inclined needles thereon secured to the half-lap so as to prevent material accumulation between the needle rows and to lessen the chance of damage to the needle rows and half-lap due to loose needle bars of past cylinder comb construction.
Description of the prior art In a conventional cylinder comb, as shown in FIGURE l, needle bars 2 having needles 3 individually secured thereto are secured to a half-lap 1 in axially extending grooves by means of needle bar setting bolts or the like. Such structure is undesirable in that in combing textiles for example, lint, dust and the like collects between the needle bars to lessen the efiiciency of combing. In addition, the needle bars are apt to come loose due to loosening of the needle bar setting bolts to cause damage to the needles and half-lap. Further it is possible that individual needles will loosen and fly from the needle bar during rotation of the prior cylinder combs at high speeds which is particularly dangerous.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTIONS In accordance with the structure of the invention rows of needles are first secured together and Subsequently inserted in axially extending angularly positioned grooves in the circumference of a half-lap and are Subsequently secured to the half-lap by a settable material positioned in the grooves around the needle rows. The needle rows and settable material are prevented from separating from the half-lap during high speed rotation of the cylinder by a wire or similar longitudinally extending member being positioned in a longitudinally extending recess at the open edge of the grooves which wire extends into the groove, or by an enlarged inner portion of the grooves and a correspondingly enlarged base on the needle rows. FIGURE 5 is a section view of modified cylinder comb structure similar to that of FIGURE 3 and in which the half-lap of FIGURE 4 is used.
FIGURE 5-A is similar to FIGURE 5 and shows an alternate method of securing the needles together in rows.
DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS With reference to FIGURES 2, 3 and 3-A longitudinally extending grooves 6 are provided in the half-lap 4 of a cylinder comb constructed in accordance with the invention. Each groove 6 is inclined to a radius passing through the groove at the circumferential surface 5 of the half-lap by a fixed angle 0. The grooves 6 are separated around the half-lap by a pitch P.
Separately from the half-lap 4 a plurality of needles 7 are arranged in a row with their pointed ends 8 in a predetermined relation, such as in a straight line. Lengths of wire 10 as in FIGURE 3 or a metal tape 11 as in FIGURE 3-A are then secured to the front part of each of the needle bases 9. Subsequently the needle bases and wire or tape are covered as by solder 12 over the entire surface of the base of the needles and the wire or tape.
The needles are thus secured together in the shape of ribbons or combs. Each needle comb is then positioned in a groove 6 with the back of the needle comb positioned against the wall 13 of the groove 6. The Vremaining portion of the groove 6 is then filled with a settable filler 14, such as synthetic resin or solder.
Thus the needle rows are secured in the grooves 6 after the fillers have set. The settable material provides a surface at the open edge of the groove which is smooth and uniform in quality with the surface 5 of the half-lap 4. The groove at the open edge may be filled with a separate material for producing the desired surface which is different from the settable material securing the needles in the grooves, if desired.
As shown particularly in FIGURE 3, if desired an axially extending recess 28 may be provided near the open edge of the groove and a piece of wire 29 is inserted into the recess. The wire is of a diameter to extend a distance into the groove. The wire 29 is then secured in the recess 28 on filling of the groove with the settable material. The wire 29 in the groove 28 serves to prevent disengagement of the settable material and needle comb from the half-lap on rapid rotation of the half-lap due to centrifugal force.
The embodiment of the cylinder comb of the invention illustrated in FIGURES 4, 5 and 5-A includes a half-lap 21 having grooves 26 theren similar to the grooves 6 in the embodiment of the cylinder comb illustrated in FIG- URES 2 and 3, including parallel front and back surfaces 24 and 23. In addition, an offset 25 is provided in the front surface 24 of the grooves 26 to provide an enlarged inner portion for the grooves 26. Then, needle rows are particularly shown in FIGURES 5 and 5-A are provided with the wire or metal tape to which the needles are secured positioned adjacent the enlarged inner portion of the grooves 26.
With the modified structure illustrated in FIGURE 5, it Will then be necessary to place the needles secured together as in a comb in the grooves 26 in the half-lap 21 from the ends thereof. With the modified structure the settable material 30 and the needles 27, connecting wire and metal bands secured together are prevented from outward radal movement with respect to the half-lap 21 on rotation of the cylinder due to the offset 25 in the grooves 26.
A cylinder comb constructed in accordance with FIG- URES 2, 3 and 3-A or in accordance with FIGURES 4, 5 and 5-A will olfer no needle bars to collect objectionable material. Further, there will be no tedious individual setting of needles and needle bars cannot cause damage by becoming loose. consequently fitting and exchange operations are particularly simple with the structures of the invention.
ln addition, as the result of the structure illustrated in FIGURES 2 through 5-A, the comhing of textiles can be performed under the best conditions for a long period of time and as static cannot be generated, the rotation of the half-lap may be quite rapid and the quality of combed textile improved. Resultingly the efliciency of the apparatus according to the invention is increased.
What I claim is:
1. A cylinder comb, comprising a half-lap, a plurality of grooves in the exterior of the half-lap each inclined at a predetermined angle to a radial line of the half-lap which grooves are parallel to the axis of rotation of said half-lap, a plurality of needles, means connecting the needles in a row to form individual needle combs which are fitted into the grooves, a settable material in the remaining space of each of the grooves and shoulder means operable between the groove and needle comb for securing the needle comb in the groove.
2. Structure as set forth in claim 1 wherein the means connecting the needles is a wire secured to each of the needles.
3. Structure as set forth in claim 1 wherein the means connecting the needles is a metal tape secured to each of the needles.
4. Structure as set forth in claim 1 wherein the settable material is a synthetic resin.
5. Structure as set forth in claim 1 wherein the settable material is a low temperature melting alloy.
6. Structure as set forth in vclaim 1 wherein a recess is provided in one wall of the groove adjacent the upper edge thereof and the shoulder means is a wire positioned in the recess having a diameter such that the wire extends out of the recess and into the groove.
7. Structure as set forth in claim 1 wherein an inner portion of the groove is enlarged to form the shoulder means and the means connecting the needle combs is positioned adjacent the enlarged inner portion of the groove.
