STRUCTURES FOR SUPPORTING COLLAPSIBLE TABLE-TOPS Filed Dec. 22, 1967 INVENTOR ATTORNEY United States Patent 3,455,255 STRUCTURES FOR SUPPORTING COLLAPSIBLE TABLE-TOPS Pascual Jos M. Oscoz Sanchez, Ibanez de Bilbao 6, Bilbao 1, Spain Filed Dec. 22, 1967, Ser. No. 692,754 Int. Cl. A47b 3/08, 1/04 U.S. Cl. 108-33 2 Claims ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The structure which is the subject of the present invention is, again, very simple, since it consists only of a maximum of two articulated supports, which are similar to a part of the supporting framework of a normal rigid structure.
With the aim of enabling the present invention to be better interpreted, in the attached drawings, complementary to the present exposition, various forms for its practical embodiment are represented; these forms are included merely by way of informative example, and are in no way limitative of the invention.
In the said drawings, FIGURES 1, 2 and 3 show a perspective view of astructure carried out in accordance with the characteristics of the present invention, which structure is shown in the completely folded position, with the structure semi-unfolded, and with the structure in the position of supporting the table-top, the table-top being indicated by dotted lines in the latter figure.
FIGURE 4 shows a plan view of the said structure, with its elements folded.
FIGURE 5 shows another structure with the same characteristics, but equipped with one single support framework.
As is shown in FIGURES 1 to 4, the structure is constituted by a fixed panel 1, equipped with lateral leaves flanges on the internal faces of which there are respectively articulated, by means of the hinges 4 and 5, the support frameworks 3 and 2, which are constituted by a horizontal arm and a leg which projects beyond the upper part, by means of the projecting piece 6, to form the point of support for the collapsible table-top.
Both frameworks have their articulated end in angular form, in order to attain the sufficient length of hinge.
The situation of the articulation is such that they permit, as is shown in FIGURE 4, one of the frameworks to be situated against the fixed framework, and the other collapsed on the first. For this reason the framework 2 is longer than 3, so that in the unfolded position the leg will remain at the same distance from the fixed framework.
As has been said above, the folding structure can be constituted by a single collapsible framework 7, as is shown in FIGURE 5, in which case the open position is inclined with respect to the plane which the fixed framework forms.
The table-top can be equipped with locking means in order to fix the table-top to the legs, which means may be simple check-pieces, or channels or hollows into which there fit the projecting pieces 6 0f the framework.
Likewise, the fixed framework can form part of a piece of furniture which, in turn, can incorporate other folding frameworks, of the same or of a different type.
Having sufiiciently described the nature of the present invention, together with examples of the practical embodiment thereof, it only remains to be added that in the examples described it is possible to introduce changes of material, form and arrangement, provided that such alterations do not suppose any substantial variation in the object of the invention.
I claim:
1. A table structure comprising, a frame having a panel provided with lateral flanges extending at substantially right angles to the panel, an arm pivoted to the inside of one of the flanges with the pivot being located near to the outer edge of the flange, a vertical supporting leg at the outer end of the arm, the arm and its attached leg being of a size to enable them to be fitted within the frame between the flanges thereof, a second arm pivotally attached to the second flange and having its pivot located at a point adjacent to the point of joinder of said flange to the panel, said second arm carrying a leg at its end, the last-mentioned arm and its attached leg being pivotal in a manner to enable it to be disposed within the frame between the flanges thereof and behind the first arm; the arms when disposed within the frame lying one behind the other and inwardly of the outer limits of the flanges, both arms being capable, by movement on their respective pivots to cause them to project outwardly from the frame into substantially parallel relationship and to then co-operate with the frame in supporting a table-top.
2. A table structure according to claim 1, wherein the pivots which attach the arms to the panel are respectively located at opposite sides of a transverse center line through the flanges, the arms and their attached legs being disposed, when nested in the frame in parallel relation to the face of the panel and in parallel relation to one another.
