Description

May 27, 1969 G. P. wYLE HOLDER FOR WIRE COIIJ Filed May 26, 1967 IML/@mt ocme# www? w\lLE Y Km( M United States Patent O U.S. Cl. 242-129 5 Claims ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A wire coil holder comprised of a supporting yoke having a pair of spaced limbs each provided with a pivoted knuckle. A coil support is rotatably mounted on each pivotal knuckle so that by pivotal adjustment of the knuckles relative to their respective limbs, either coil support may assume a vertical axis while the axis of the other support is horizontal.
This invention relates to supports or holders particularly for wire and like coil material for feeding the material to forming machines for example cold heading machines.
The object of the invention is to provide an improved support or holder which may facilitate continuous production by the machine using the material.
In accordance with the present invention a coil holder or support comprises a yoke having at least two spaced coil supporting members each of which is connected to the yoke by a swivel joint.
By these meansa coil may be located on one support whilst a coil located on the other support is being fed into the machine, and each coil may be swung between vertical and horizontal (for example) planes thus enabling the position of assembly of the coil to the support and the position during feeding from the support to be most advantageously selected.
One preferred embodiment of the invention is now more particularly described with reference to the accompanying drawings wherein the sole figure shows a coil holder in one position thereof.
Referring now to the drawing the coil holder comprises a vertically extending tubular support provided with a foot 11 at its lower end and with a bearing, not shown, at its upper end which journals yoke comprising horizontally extending portions 12 which project to both sides of the support 14 and a pair of generally parallel limbs 13, 14 provided at the free ends of the portions 12.
The free end of each limb 13, 14 is provided with a pivotal knuckle 15, 16 and each knuckle carries a corresponding pin or stub shaft 17, 18 which may extend as a continuation of the limb 13, 14 as illustrated in the case of the pin 17, or may extend substantially transversely of the limb and outwardly therefrom, as in the case of the pin 18. If desired, detent means, consisting of, for example, a spring loaded pin 13 to engage with complementary recesses 15 and 15" in each knuckle may be provided to locate the knuckles in either position.
Each pin 17, 18 is provided with an anti-friction bearing 20 for rotatably mounting a coil support or spool 21. The spools may be on any convenient configuration and as illustrated are held to the pins by nuts 22.
In use the coil supplying wire or the like to the machine in which it is to be used or operated upon is located substantially horizontally as that in the left hand side of the coil holder in the illustration so that corresponding pin 17 extends vertically. The pin 18 on the other limb of the yoke will then be positioned to extend outwardly so that an empty spool may be removed and replaced with a fresh spool or possibly a fresh coil may be located Ion that spool. When the coil on pin 17 is used, that spool is turned to the vertical position and the one on pin 18 is turned to the horizontal position ready for use whilst the spool on pin 17 is replenished to allow substantially continuous use or operation .from a single coil holder.
I claim:
1. A coil holder comprising in combination, a supporting yoke including at least two mutually spaced limbs, a pair of knuckles pivotally mounted on the respective limbs, and a pair of rotatable coil supports carried by the respective knuckles, each pivotally mounted knuckle being angularly adjustable relative to the associated limb so that the associated coil support may have its axis disposed selectively in a vertical and a horizontal position.
2. The device as defined in claim 1 together with means releasably locking said knuckles in an adjusted position relative to said limbs.
3. The device as defined in claim 1 wherein said limbs are mutually parallel and are spaced apart by a distance sutlicient to permit either of the coil supports to have its axis vertical while the axis of the other coil support is horizontal.
4. The device as defined in claim 1 together with pivot pins mounting said knuckles on the respective limbs, and stub shafts provided on the knuckles at right angles to said pivot pins, said coil supports being rotatably positioned on said stub shafts.
5. The device as defined in claim 4 together with antifriction bearings rotatably mounting said coil supports on said stub shafts.
