A QRNEY Nrre STATES OSCAR L. NEISLER, OF INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA.
SPOKE-SOCKET.
SPECIFICATIONforming part of Letters Patent No. 344,455, dated June 29, 1886.
Application filed September 11, 1885. Serial No. 176,761. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, Oscar: L. NEIsLER, of the city of Indianapolis, county of Marion, and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spoke and Felly Clamps, of which the following is a specification.
As is well known, the fellies of vehiclewheels and the ends of the spokes secured therein ordinarily become worn and split where they are connected, rendering the parts loose and the wheel weak, while the remaining parts of the wheel are still perfect. It is also well known that wheels in such condition are difficult to repair in a substantial manner, except by the substitution of new parts, which is expensive and diflicult to do.
The principal object of my said invention is therefore to provide a device for easily, cheaply, and rigidly securing said spokes to said iellies after they have become worn and loose, as will be presently more fully described.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, which are made a part hereof, and on which similar letters of reference indicate similar parts, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a wheel, several spokes of which are shown as secured therein by means of my invention; Fig. 2, a
section through the felly, fastening device,-
and a portion of the spoke, on the dotted line 2 2; Fig. 3, a similar view on the dotted line 3 3 in Fig. 2, and Fig. 4 a perspective view of the clamp or fastening device separate.
In said drawings, the portions marked A rep resent the felly, B the spoke, and C the clamp or fastening device. The felly A and spoke B are or may be of any construction, myinvention being intended principally for repair work, and being adapted for such use with any form of spoke or felly. The clamp O is formed in two parts, each of which is formed with ahalfsocket in its top, a transverse tongue, 0, running across its under side, and a downwardlyprojecting lip, 0, to extend down onto the side of the felly. Said two parts are secured together by a rivet or bolt, 0', as shown, and thus when together form a complete socket at its top for the end of the spoke, and a lip extending down on each side of the felly, the tongue 0 being fitted into a transverse groove in the top of said felly, as shown.
My invention is used as follows; Vhen it is desired to secure the end of the spoke rigidly in position after it has become worn and loose, the end of said spoke is cut off near said folly and a transverse notch is cut in the top of the felly for the tongue 0, which is preferably formed wedge-shaped. The two parts of the clamp are then driven into position under the end of the spoke, the socket inclosing and clamping said end, the lips clamping the felly, and the tongue 0 being tightly wedged into the groove and between the end of the spoke and the top of the felly, the parts being then rigidly secured together by the bolt or rivet c", which passes through them at a pointniidway between the ends of the device, so that both ends of the two parts will be drawn into position with equal force.
In the drawings I show the end of the spoke tenon-shaped; but where a very neat job is not required it will be readily seen that the socket end of the device might be formed with a thin top edge and. clamped directly to the outside, thus saving the work of fitting the end of the spoke, as shown.
Having thus :fully described my said invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. The combination, with the felly A and spoke B, of the clamp 0, formed in two parts, said parts being provided with the tongues 0, which fit into a transverse groove in the top of the felly, and means for securing said parts together, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination of the felly A, spoke B, clamp (J, formed in two parts, each of said parts having a tongue, 0, on its under side, a half-socket on its top, and a lip, c, on its lower end, and the bolt or rivet c, for securing said parts together, substantially as set forth.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal, at Indianapolis, Indiana, this 8th day of September, A. D. 1885.
