RAILROAD-TICKET STAMP Specification forming part of Letters Patent N o. 34,378, dated February 11, 1862.v v
To all whom/ timmy concern:
Be it known that JI, EDWARD SPENCER, of
' the city and county ot' St. Louis, and State of lowing manner:
I first make a pair of piuchers, as shown by Fig. l. In the inside face of one of the i jawsof these pinchers I make three cavities. I-n the center cavity I place the de d, and in e`ach of the end cavities 15J fix a roller e, the shafts of which project through one side of the jaw, and have collars P P made onthem by which they are turned. Each shaft of these rollers hasv a-ratcl1etwl1eelI-I on it in which the ratcheto works. The letters in-N tended to be stampedou the card or ticket are made on or fixed as type in the die d. On
the rollers e e a ribbon ff is placed, so as to stretch from oneroUer to the other over the face of the type. This ribbon is saturated with ink and is drawn tight over the type and around the rollers by means of -the ratchets and ratchet-wheels before mentioned. The ribbon is made ci considerable lengthY and wound around the rollers, by which means it i can be moved over the face of the type. and provide them with fresh supply of` ink; Against the face of the other jaw c, I fix a piece of buckskin or other soft material for the typeto press'against.4 On the side vof each jaw I iix a knife, (one of which is shown by 5,) to work togetherlikea pair of shears. By these knivesthe card or ticket may be cut o at the same timethe impression is made by` the dies or type.A
