CI. 33-86 2 Claims ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE There have been many masons line devices and trigs provided for holding lines for the setting and laying of blocks, tiles and the like in various block laying situations; but to date there has not been available any line holding device which will particularly assist in the setting of metal door frames in the partition walls of buildings.
It is commonly known that partition walls of buildings are either made from clay tiles or other fireproof material in block form and in order to provide a finished Wall, plaster is applied to the surfaces of these tiles or 'blocks. The door frame then is substantially wider than the laid block such that when the plaster is applied thereto the door frame and plaster will form a continuous surface. Naturally then, in setting the walls, they must be set rearwardly with respect to one exposed surface of the door frame and applicants device provides a unit which will permit this rearward spacing of the block while insuring that the line is properly positioned on the door frame.
In addition to this particular door setting aspect of applicants device, the unit provided is useable in many standard block wall building techniques to hold the masons line in any of the various conditions in which such holding is necessary.
It is therefore an object of applicants invention to provide a masons line holding device which affords a means for holding and mounting the same upon a metallic door frame or other similar metallic structure.
-It is a further object of applicants invention to provide a masons line holding device which may be positively held onto a portion of the wall at one portion and which is adjustable at another portion thereof such that the held line may be offset with respect to the portion of the device which is positioned on the wall such that an offset wall may be constructed.
It is still a further object of applicants concept to provide a masons line holding device which incorporates certain removeable, positionable portions to facilitate use of the device along various Wall sections.
These and other objects and advantages of my invention will more fully appear from the following description made in connection with the accompanying drawings, wherein like reference characters refer to the same or similar parts through the several views, and in which:
FIG. 1 is a horizontal section taken through a partition wall or the like in which a metal door frame is being set;
FIG. 2 is a top plan view of a masons line holding device incorporating applicants concept;
FIG. 3 is a side elevation taken from FIG. 2;

In accordance with the accompanying drawings applicants masons line holding device generally designated 10 includes a body member of a right angle configuration having a first leg 11 and a second leg 12 extending at a normal angle to the said first leg 11 and in the form being substantially shorter than said first leg 11. Leg 11 includes, in the form shown, a pair of threaded spaced apart apertures 13-14 through which a positioning device such as a threaded cap screw 15 or the like may be inserted. The cap screw 15 is substantally flat on its lower threaded end 15a thereof and includes a string retaining slot 15b extending entirely thereacross.
A notch 16 is provided in spaced relation between said apertures 1314 and is formed from bending a section of the material of leg 11 in a direction opposite to that of leg 12. This formed upstanding leg section is designated 17 and in the form shown includes a string retaining notch 18 on the outstanding end thereof. Further in the form shown, a magnet or other metallic attracting device 19 is provided in relatively close association to the junction point of leg 11 and leg 12 which magnet 19 is particularly utilized when the device 10 is to be positioned on metallic door frames or the like. Magnet 19 will hold the device 10' to the door frame F as particularly illustrated in FIG. 1 to facilitate positioning of the door frame F within a partition wall W.
A pair of slots 20-21 are formed at the junction of the legs 11 and 12 and are provided in substantially parallel, adjacent relation to the leg 11 and extend through leg 12 to provide a line positioning slot for certain applications of the device. The other leg 12 of the device 10 is provided with a pair of bifurcations 22-22 on its outward extending end and a leaf spring member 23 is mounted through a pin 24 between the bifurcations 22 22. The purpose of this leaf spring 23 will be explained hereinafter when a description of the uses of the device is made.
As illustrated in FIG. 1 the line holding device 10 receives its greatest use when mounting metal door frames in partition walls. As illustrated in FIG. 1 the partition wall is usually of less thickness than the frame such that upon the application of plaster to the surfaces of the wall the finished wall will mate with the flanges of the door frame. As illustrated in FIG. 1 the device 10 is positioned against the door frame such that the magnet 19 will attract and hold the same on to the side flange of the frame. In positioning this device 10 on the frame it will be noted that the aperture 13' is positioned in at a particular dimension from the junction of the legs 11-12 so that it may be utilized as an inspection hole should score lines be scribed on the frame to assist in determining the proper block height with inspection being made through aperture 13 to determine whether the device 10 is properly situated with respect to any one of the scribed, block marking lines. In order to obtain the proper offset for the plaster to be applied to wall W the adjustable string positioning member 15 is placed through aperture 14 and positioned therein such that the string S will be held at the proper distance from the leg 11. The notch 15!; serves to particularly hold the string at this proper location and the string S after passing through the notch 15b is brought into the aperture area 16 of leg 11 and is wrapped about the outstanding lug member 17 again utilizing the string connecting notch 18 formed therein for positive attachment thereof.
It should be obvious that when, for example, two doorways are to be spaced on a wall that if one person were to perform the string fixing operation that he would have to in some manner, hold one of the positioning devices 10 into one of the door frames while keeping the string taut and affixing the other member to the other of the door frames. With the magnetic device 19 as provided in applicants unit this problem has been solved in that it is a simple task to place one of the devices 10' on one of the door frames and accomplish the strong tensioning and measuring without the devices 10 falling from the door.
Applicants device 10 is also capable of performing any different string aligning functions for the laying of brick or block. As illustrated in FIGS. 5 and 6 for example, when laying large concrete block the device 10 may be positioned within and upon the blocks simply by moving the adjustable string positioning device into the aperture 13 such that the dimension between the positionable member 15 and leg 12 is slightly greater than that normally provided between the side surface of a. block B and the inner apertures normally provided between the side surface of a block B and the inner apertures normally provided therein. In this case the notches -21 are utilized and as these notches are arranged adjacent and parallel to the leg 11 they will hold the string S at the top of the block B. Again it is necessary to afiix the string to some portion of the device 10 for anchoring the same and the upstanding lug 17 and notch 18 are again utilized. After positioning the device 10 onto the block, applying tension to the string will pull the same into frictioned contact with the block and hold the same thereto.
When laying bricks or what may he termed solid block C applicants device may be utilized in the same manner as discussed in FIGS. 5 and 6 except that in this case the device 10 must be broadened to permit grasping of the block C between the adjustable member 15 and the leg 12. To permit this broadening the adjustable device 15 is now shifted to aperture 14 such that the dimension between the extended positioner 15 and the leg 12 is slightly greater than the width of the solid block. Again the notches 20-21 are utilized to positively hold the string at the upper level of the block C. The upper leg 11 again lays adjacent the top surface of the block C.
One other common nseage for the device 10 embodying applicants device is as a trigging device. A trig is essentially a unit which will hold midpoints of a string at a proper level such that no sag will occur along a long course of block. In order to accomplish this the string positioning device 15 is now reversed from its normally described position such that the enlarged head 15c thereof will lie inwardly of leg 11 and is inserted into leg 11 such that the lead 150 is spaced only slightly from the inner surface thereof. In this manner it is possible to position the string S above the head 15c and below the leg 11 to hold the same at intermediate points on the wall and hold the string at the upper surface of a block. use the leaf spring 23 is utilized to properly force the head 15c of the adjustment element 15 rearwardly against the front surface of the block such that the string S will be positively held in proper position. The use of the leaf spring should be obvious from FIG. 10 in that it provides a bias against the rear surface of the block or brick.
An obvious use of applicants device is in the laying of blocks and maintaining a line from a corner. In this instance the adjustment member 15 would be retracted and much as illustrated in FIG. 1 the device would engage the corner of the block with sides 12 and 19 disposed on adjacent sides of the block.
It should -be obvious that in the primary use of applicants device which is the setting of metallic door frames in partition walls and the like that the magnetic member 19 provides its greatest use and in the other installations and uses the magnet performs no specific function but the shape and elements of the device become more important in these individual block laying methods.
It should be obvious that applicant has provided a new and unique masons line device which incorporates a magnetic holding unit therein to particularly afford attractive holding forces when setting metal door frames and the like in partition walls.
It will, of course, be understood that various changes may be made in the form, details, arrangements and proportion of parts without departing from the scope of my invention, which generally stated consists in the matter set forth in the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
1. A masons line device including:
(a) a body member defining:
(1) a first leg; (2) a second leg arranged generally normal to said first leg;
(b) an adjustable line positioning element adjustably receivable through said first leg whereby a length of line may the positioned at predetermined parallel distances from said first leg; and
(c) biasing means pivotally mounted on said second leg, shiftable into face to face relation with said line positioning element to provide a clamping and holding force for articles received therebetween,
2. The structure set forth in claim 1 and notch means formed in said second leg on at least one side thereof adjacent said first leg for placement of the line thereof.
