The present invention has relation to that class ot' ice-machineswherein a liquetiablega-s, prel'erably that of ammonia, is introduced in a compression-pump. and is compressedto a lpartly statel of liquetaction, the pressure being` subsequently removed,the -liqueiied refrigerating agent expanding through tubes, coils, tanks, or other Ichambers, and the frigoritic ett'ects produced by the volatile liquid again assuming its gaseous state is utilized t'or absorption ot' heat.
lThe invention therefore consists in an iur proved arrangement ot' coils, combined with successive oil-intcrcepting tanks, and certain improvements in the construction ot' the gas- 4 .compressor and its' adjuncts, as willbe hereinafter described, and specitieally set t'orth in the claims.

The construction of the apparatus and its operation havinl been fully set t'orth, i will now describe more minutelv the compressor. The compressiiig-cylinder A is provided with a jacket, K, in the lower portion of which a certain quantity ot" crude lubricating-oil is kept to lubricate the piston L and seal its periphery against the interior ot" the cylinder.

Pendent from the center oft-he valvechamber is a cylindricalprojection, yw, to guide-aud retain one end of-the coil-spring T, while the opposite end is guided and retained by a similar projection, upon the top of thevalve, the distance between the projections regulating the distance that the valve can be lifted 'olf its seat.
The valve-chamber has also between it and itsjacket a space in communication with the gasreceiving chamber surrounding the cylinder A I for the reception of `cool gas to cool the walls of thevalvechamber. The` lubricating-oil in thebottom of the cylinder is incommunica- 3o tion with an .oil-chamber, U., located between l the twostuingboxes, through which the pis-v tonrod passes, and at one side ofthe cylindrical jacket K is connected a glass gage, y, to
show the amountof oiltherein, an additional supply of oil being admitted by means of a suitable hand -`,pump,V V. The interceptiug cylinder B isalso provided' with a glass gage,
z, to indicate the amount of oil therein.
The liquid-holder D, in 'connection with the 4o main holder E, is considered of lgreat importance, asit keeps eondenserandfreezing coils entirely free from eil, as it eondenses the oil vapors besides a limited quantity of am' monia-gas, which latter` expands by introducing it with the oil back tothe pump-cylinder,` and reduces the temperature of the oil down below freezing-point, and-thereby keeps .thev
' stuffing-box perfectly cool, as well as coolingv the pump. The construction ofyalve inthe 5o piston is also of importance, as it has comparatively little lift, and consequently lasts `much longer, as Well as` allowingthe liquid and'gas to pass'freely to top of piston.
Having 'now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

In an ice-machine, the combination of a gas-compressor adapted to contain oil in its lower end, two oil-interceptors communicatv ing with each other and with' the compressor, 6o and one or. more liquidholders communicat# ing with each other and with the interceptors, condenser-coils, and freezing-coils, substan-v tially as and for the purpose set forth.

In an ice-machine, a gas-compressor and 6 5 twooil-interceptors,one arranged horizontally, or nearly so, and the other arranged vertically and communicating with the compressor at both top and bottom, and with a chamber between the'stuing-boxes, in combination with 7o two liqu'id-h0lders,one of whichcommunicates with thejnterceptors and the other with the ,condenser-coils and freezingcoils, said holders also communicating with each other, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
