M. R. VINSON.
PLOW.
No. 342,483. Patented May 25, 1886.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MICHAEL RINEHEARDT VINSON, OF HOPE, ARKANSAS.
PLOW.
EPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 342,483, dated lMay 25, 1886.
Application filed February 17, 1886. Serial No. 192,232. (No model.)
T0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, llIIClHAEL RINEHEARDI VINSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hope, in the county of Hempstead and State of Arkansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Plows, Sod-Gutters, RootCutters, and Ground-0ultivators5 and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the in vention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the lelters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention has relation to sod and root cutters and ground-caltivators; and it consists in the novel construction and arrangement of its parts.
In the accompinying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same with some of its parts broken away to show the manner of fastening the same together. Figs. 3, 4, 5, and (i are detail views.
My invention is described as follows: The plow-stock l is made in the ordinary manner, except that the beam 2 is long enough to allow of an extra foot in front, 3, in addition to the usual foot, 4.. To the foot4 is bolted a common iron half-shovel or steel-twister plowpoint, 5, or other plow-point, for bedding purposes; The front foot, 3, is mortised into the beam 2 at the same angle as the foot 4, and is I braced in position by a combined upright cut ter and grass-rod 6, the upper end of which is secured to the lower face of the beam 2 by a tenou and bolt, 7, and itslower' end secured to the front face of the foot 3 by a tenon and bolt, 8. The front face of this combined upright cutter and grass-rod 6 is cut away until its front face forms a segment of a circle, and this front face is tapered to a cutting-edge, 9. At the lower end and front face of the foot 3 is bolted my combined plow-point and cutter 10, the middle of which is raised to a sharp edge, 11. Its tenon 12, which extends from the upper end, enters the front face of the foot 3, and immediately under the tenon 8 of the combined upright cutter and grassrod 6, its upper corner resting against the lower edge of said tenon, while the lower face of said cutter l0 rests on the seat 13 of the foot 3, and is bolted thereto by bolts 14 and a bolt also through the tenon 12. The edge 11 of the combined plow-point and cutter 10 and the edge 9 of the combined cutter and grass-rod 6 meet and form one continuous sharp edge from the point of the cutter 10 to the lower face of the beam 2. At the point where the combined upright cutter and grass-rod 6 and the combined plow-point and cutter 10 meet the front face of the standard 3 is beveled off on either side, forming inclines 15. The plow as thus constructed is adapted to plow through new land or land never before broken. It will cut roots and turn a furrow for bedding up the land at the sameti me. It will also cut through the turf and bed up old fields that have grown up in sedge-grass and sprouts for a number of years.
Having described my invention, what Iclaim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
The combination of the plow-stook 1, having the plow 5, with the plow-foot 3, having the seat 13 and inclines 15, the combined upright cutter and grass-rod 6, having the curved front face and sharp edge 9, and combined plow-point and cutter 10, having the sharp edge 11, its lower face resting on the seat 13,
substantially as shown and described, and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix mysignature in presence of two witnesses.
MICHAEL RINEHEARD'I Vl NSON.
