UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SOMMERS CROVELL, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
IRON FENCE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 342,429, dated May 25, 1886.
Application filed July 1G, 1885.
.To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SoMMERs CROWELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the countyvof Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Iron Fences, of which the following is a specification.
It has been customary in the manufacture of pickets of an iron fence (that were constructed of east and wrought metal) to either cast the ti-p or end portion upon a rod laid in the mold or to rivet and in some cases unite the cast and Wrought metal with lead packing, involving .much labor and expenditure of time.
The object of my invention is to overcome these difiieulties and form a picket4 expedi-V tiously at a greatly-reduced cost.
My invention consists in the improved coustruction ofthe end portion of a picket of an iron fence, commonly known as the tip, with a recessed clamping-piece, in such a manner that when the sameis placed upon one side ofthe end of a vertical rod and united to a corresponding1 clamp directly in line upon the opposite side of the rod by meansu ol' bolts passing through holesin their opposing cheeks (said bolts having nuts upon serew-threads on their outer-ends) the two surfaces of the clamps are drawn tightly together, securing the tip upon the rod, dispensing` with the use of rivets, lead packing, or similar devices to unite the parts together, as will be hereinafter described.
In the accompanyingdrawings, which make a part of this specification, Figure l is a front elevation or face view of a panel composed of three pickets of my improved fence. Fig. 2 is an edge view of a picket. Figs. 3, 4:, and 5 are respectively a rear face, an edge, and an end view of the tip B. Figs. 6, 7, and S are respectively similar views of the casting C, to which is attached the clamp d. Fig. 9 is a vertical section of one end of a picket, showing the connection of the clamps d d', the tip B, and casting C.
Like letters of reference in all the figures indicate the same parts.
B represents a tip, detail views of which are shown in Figs. 3, 4, and 5. portion a is provided with a slot or passage, b, topermit of its attachment to the horizontal rod E, and it is permanently connected thereto by any suitable means.
Projecting in a vertical line from the case or box a is the clamp d, which is recessed in its center to admit of the clamp lapping half over the rod D. The casting C has a clamp, d', upon its upper end, which is placed directly inline with the clamp d upon 'the opposite side of the rod D. Each clamp d d is provided with holes ce in the cheeks, which permit ofthe passage through them of the connecting-bolts f f. These bolts have upon their outer ends the nuts gg, by the turning ofwhich, and their consequent tightening, the clamps d d are drawn together, binding the tip secu rely upon the end of the rod D. The tip B being cast with the recessed clamp d, obviates the necessity of casting it upon a rod of wroughtiron, or riveting or forming a lead packing to unite the two pieces. Vhen the clamps of the tip B and piece C are drawn together upon the rod D by means of thescrew-boltsfj'and their nuts g g, a iirm connection of the parts is effected.v i
Fig. l shows a face view of three pickets, in which the tip B and pieces C are attached to opposite ends of the rod D, the connection of the parts on each end being similar.
The same construction of 'pickets is applicable to guards for cellar-windows, gates, posts, and similar purposes.
I claim as my invention- A fencepieket composed of the tip B, having the clamp d, and the piece C, with the clamp d', said elamps'being recessed and provided w'ith holes e e, whereby the picket B and piece C are connected to the rod D by means of the bolts f f and nut-s g y, substantially in the manner shown and described.
SOMMERS CROWELL.
