TILTABLE TABLE 'Sheet Filed April 28, 1967 FIG; 4
FIG. 5
United States Patent 2 Claims ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A table of the type shown in Patent No. 3,115,849 in which the bolts mounted in the table top are cast into rigid position in the table top and extend loosely through relatively large apertures in a plate, or cover portion which is mounted on a supporting member. The bolts being each threadedly engaged by a nut having a convex spherical surface to press a concave spherical surface of a washer that slidably engages the surface of the plate or cover portion on its side remote from the table top so that the bolts are subjected to almost no bending stress which stress, in the Patent 3,115,849 caused early failure of the device and precluded forming the table top as an integral plant surface. The und-ersurface of the table top being formed with ribs that include the bosses.
The objectives of the present invention are:
To provide a top for such a table that is suitable to be made by high pressure die casting;
To obtain a flat, smooth top surface without indented areas;
To obtain a lighter weight top with sufiicient strength to carry a projector or like machine;
To provide a universal inclining feature with adjustment bolts rigidly cast into the table top;
To provide a method of seating the tilt nuts by use of washers having a spherical seat in which the washers are self aligning and provide positive locking between the tilt nut and the table top support;
To provide a reduction in the cost of production of the table by eliminating separate assembly operations, and by eliminating the need for extensive preparatory operations for the application of the final finish.
Other and further objects and advantages will appear from the following specification taken with the accompanying drawing in which like characters of reference refer to similar parts in the several views and in which:
FIGURE 1 is a plan view of the table top;
FIGURE 2 is a bottom view of the table top;
FIGURE 3 is an elevation;
FIGURE 4 is a section through the table and adjusting support on line 4-4 of FIGURE 2 in one adjusted position; and
FIGURE 5 is a view similar to FIGURE 4, but in a different adjusted position.
Such tables are portable and are demountable as is seen in Patent No. 3,115,849.
Referring more particularly to the drawings the device shown embodying the invention comprises an upright supporting post adapted to support a table or support 11, while allowing adjustment thereof to desired angular relation for the support of a projector or the like.
On the upper end of upright post 10 is provided a supporting member 12, having a hollow portion 13 adapted to receive the upper end of post 10 which is adapted to engage the lower surface of the top or cover portion 14 on which is positioned the contact button or the like 15 which is preferably spherical as shown and on which the table is adapted to be supported. The contact button 15 is preferably positioned in a spherical recess in the lower side of table 11.
Patented Jan. 14, 1969 The portion 14 of member 12 has the projections 16 having openings therethrough aligned with screws 17 carrying threaded nuts 18 whereby adjustment of nuts 18 will effect angular adjustment of table 11 to thereby effect desired angular positioning of a projector or the like supported on table 11.
Screws, or bolts 17 are cast into the table top 11 so they are integral therewith and are each preferably provided with a head, or the like embedded in a boss 20. This has the result of reducing the assembly time of bolts with the table top and gives a flat top without depressions. The mass of the bosses 20 is included in the ribbing 36 which extends radially from a central boss in which the recess is provided to receive button 15.
Around the edge of the table is a flange 31 to which the under surface ribs 30 extend. These ribs 30, 31 and the bosses 20, and boss 20a that includes a depression to receive boss 15, constitute an integral framework which is covered by a thin plate of the die cast metal that is integral and cast simultaneously with the framework. By this structure the entire table top may be high pressure die cast and will require little further treatment to prepare it for finish coating, and will require no further operation to assemble the bolts with the table top and will not have unevenness in the table top.
The adjusting nuts 18 are provided with convex spherical surfaces, and washers 19 are provided with spherical concave surfaces so that the washers 19' remain aligned with the nuts 18 and distribute the pull of the nut 18 equally about the rim of the aperture in lug 16, and this structure also assures an axial pull on bolt 17.
The manner of mounting the part 12 :on the element 10 is not part of the present invention and any known mounting may be used.
What is claimed is:
1. An adjustable table comprising a table top having a central boss on the underside, a depression in the bottom surface of said central boss, three bosses arranged in a triangle about said central boss, three downwardly extending bolts each integrally cast with its head completely embedded in one of said three bosses, a support member having a central upstanding projection engaging said depression in said central boss, three apertures arranged in a triangle about said central upstanding projection one opposite each of said bosses, each said bolt extending through a corresponding said aperture, a washer having a generally spherical depression on each said bolt, and a nut on each said bolt having a surface complementary to said depression on the corresponding washer.
2. The table top of claim 1 in which said table top is high pressure die cast and includes a peripheral flange and a plurality of generally radial ribs, certain of said ribs being arranged to include said three bosses arranged about said central boss, and further ribs extending from said three bosses to intersect an adjacent radial rib and an integral web forming a flat face on the side of said table top away from said bosses, said web being cast integrally with said bosses and said ribs.
