CASE FOR LEAD PIPE. No. 341,663. Patented May 11, 1886.
WITNESSES: I -swam W BY ATTORNEYS.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALBERT KOHLER, OF WACONIA, MINNESOTA.
CASE FOR LEADPIPE.
SPECIFICATION foiming part of Letters Patent No. 341,663, dated May 11, 1886.
Application filed March 4,1886.
of which the following is a specification, ref-' erence being had to the annexed drawings, forming a part thereof, in which Figure 1 is a plan view with parts removed to show the internal construction. Fig. 2 is a transverse section taken on line no as in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of one of the curved strips for separating the different convolutions of lead pipe.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the different figures of the drawings. I
The object of my invention is to provide a simple and efficient device for containing lead pipe, in which the several coils of the'pipe will be isolated from each other, and thus prevented from being destroyed or injured by the jamming of one layer or coil of pipe upon another.
My invention consists in a crate or case, preferably made in octagonal form, with one or more partitions, and a covering and bottom made up of transverse strips crossing the frame at different angles, and curved strips secured to the transverse strips of the partition for separating the adjacent convolutions of the pipe.
To an octagonal frame, A, are secured series of transverse strips a, forming, together with the frame, one side of my improved carrying-case. The opposite side is similarly formed of an octagonal frame, A, and transverse strips a. The strips in both cases are attached to the outer sides of the octagonal frames, forming recessesb 1) within the frames, in which the coils of lead pipe are received.
A central slatted partition, B, formed of the transverse strips 0 and the curved separatingstrips d,is received between the frames A A, and the lead pipe (3, which is to be carried in the case, is coiled first around a central boss, 6, attached to the slatted partition B, then in increasing spiral between the several separating-strips d until the coil of pipe reaches the inner surface of the frame A, when it is bent and Serial No. 194,080. (No model.)
passed through to theopposite side of the slatted partition B, and coiled from the periphery of the slatted partition inward toward the central boss, 6, on the opposite'side of the slatted partition between the curved separating-strips d, as shownin Fig.1. By means ofthis arrangement the several convolutions of the pipe are separated from each other, and are held individually, so that they cannot be injured by contact with each other.
Several slatted partitions B may beincludcd between the outside frames, each slatted partition carrying two coils of the pipe, which may be a continuous piece, or it may be in several sections. The frames A, B, and A are clamped together by bolts f, passing through them at or near their angles, and a bolt, f, passing through the center.
Instead of employing strips a a. to form the sides of my improved case, I may close it tightly by means of boards secured to the frames A A. I
To secure strength and rigidity, Iarrange the series of strips of which the caseis formed so that they cross each other at different angles.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, with a slatted partition, B, formed of strips 0 and curved separating-pieces d,secured to the strips, and provided with central bosses, e, on opposite sides thereof, and the frame A A, of protecting-covers and means for securing the covers to the slatted partition, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. As an improved article of manufacture, a case for carrying pipe, formed of a slatted partition, B, provided with curved separatingpieces d and central bosses, e, the octagonal frames A A, strips a a, secured thereto, and bolts f, for fastening the several parts of the case together, substantiallyas herein shown and described.
