ARTHUR M. BOYER, OF \VINNETKA, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO M. R. SIMPSON, OF. SAME PLACE.
HORSE-BLANKET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No.341,635, dated May 11,] 886. Application filed February 18, 1886. Serial No. 192,444. (No model.)
T all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ARTHUR M. BOYER, a citizen of the United States, residing in Winnetka, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Blankets or Coverings for Horses, Mules, &c., of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide the blanket or covering for horses, mules,&c., with means whereby it may be held in place and strengthened and its durability increased.
The invention consists in the combination, with the blanket or covering, of a band or strap of leather, webbing, or other suitable material, extending from the breast of the animal around the shoulders and over the withers and sewed to the blanket or covering, the
ends being fastened by a buckle at the breast. The accompanying drawing shows a blanket to which my improvement has been applied, and in said drawing A represents the blanket or covering, which may be in any of the ordinary forms, and which usually extends as far on the neck of the animal as the point D.
Bis the strengthening band or strap. As appears from the drawing,it extends from the breast over and around the shoulders and withers, and it ends as secured at the breast 0 by a buckle or equivalent fastening, 0. That portion of the strap intermediate between the ends is securely sewed to the blanket or covering.
The drawing shows but one side of the 5 blanket; but it is to be understood that the side not shown is similar.
The strap may be secured to the inside or outside of the blanket, as preferred.
The peculiar advantage and utility of my invention is that by its use, as indicated above,
upon the blankets or coverings of horses, mules, &-c., the tension along the neck, edge, and about the breast on the blanket itself is transferred to and evenly distributed along and around the band or strap B, the blanket or covering, when the ends of the strap or band are fastened together, being held in place upon the animal, strengthened in the part most subject to Wear and tension, and its durability greatly increased.
I am aware that it is not new to provide horse-blankets with strengthening cords or strips sewed around their edges, and also that surcingles have been permanently attached to horse-blankets; but these do not embody my invention, the essential novelty of which is found in the fact that the flat strengthening band or strap extends from the breast up over and around the shoulders and withers of the animal, whereby and by means of which siin- 6o ple and economical strengthening-strap all the strains usually borne by the blanket about the breast and about the shoulders are transferred from the blanket itself to and along such single strap. 6 \Vhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- A. horseblanket provided with a strengthening strap or band suitably attached to and passing entirely around back of the neck-open- 7o ing of the blanket, said strap being connected at the breast by a buckle and extending over the shoulders and withers of the animal and adapted to strengthen the blanket, substantially as described.
ARTHUR M. BOYER.
