A further object of the invention is the provision of a cable-bending tool having cable engaging portions which are movably secured to the cable-bending tool and capable of altering their position relative to the tool as a cable is being bent thereby.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a cable-bending tool incorporating means for moving a pair of cable engaging arms relative to a fixed cable engaging die so as to bend the cable sharply thereover.
The cable-bending tool disclosed herein comprises an improvement in the art in that a simple inexpensive device is disclosed which may be easily operated manually or attached to and operated by an electric drill. The device will bend wire cable from Zero to 90 and will bend the cable in a relatively short bend so that the cable can be shaped to conform with the particular use and position desired. The cable-bending tool disclosed herein will quickly and easily handle cables of one-half inch to one and one-half inches in diameter and without changing the cable-engaging dies.
The spaced oppositely disposed cable-engaging dies are pivotally arranged relative to the remainder of the tool so that they can be positioned close to the main cable-engaging die over which the cable is bent or they may be moved outwardly relative thereto and thus easily and effectively control the sharpness of the bend by controlling the area of} the cable which is bent.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts .and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being the intention to cover all changes and modifications of the example of the invention herein chosen for purposes of the disclosure, which do not constitute departures from the spirit and scope of the invention.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein:
FIGURE 1 is a perspective view showing the cablebending tool engaged on a section of bent cable.
Broken lines in FIGURE 1 show a straight section of cable and alternate positions of portions of the cablebending tool.
FIGURE 2 is a longitudinal section on line 2-2 of FIGURE 1.
FIGURE 3 is a cross section on line 3-3 of FIGURE 2.
By referring to the drawings in FIGURE 1 in particular,
3,415,104 Patented Dec. 10, 1968 it will be seen that the cable-bending tool comprises an elongated cylindrical body member 10 having oppositely disposed longitudinally extending slots 11 therein. One end of the body member 10 is threaded and receives an internally threaded cap 12 which is apertured to pass an elongated screw threaded bar having a nut 13 on its outermost end. The opposite end of the screw threaded bar which may be best seen by referring to FIGURE 2 of the drawings wherein the screw threaded bar is indicated by the numeral 14, will be seen to be engaged against a thrust bearing 15 which in turn is apertured so that a reduced end portion of the screw threaded rod 14 can be piloted in the aperture in the thrust bearing 15. The thrust bearing 15 is positioned in the end of the body member 10, the end having been inturned as at 16 to form a suitable supporting construction. A removable and replacable fixed die 17 has a caplike configuration 18 engaged over the end 16 of the body member 10 and this is provided with spaced oppositely disposed outturned bifurcated jaws 19. A cable to be bent is disclosed in FIGURE 1 of the drawings and in FIGURE 2 of the drawings and positioned between the jaws 19. The cable is indicated by the letter C. A yoke 20 has a threaded aperture centrally thereof threadably engaged on the screw threaded rod 14 with the oppositely disposed ends of the yoke extending outwardly through the slots 11. A pair of links 21 are pivotally secured to the opposite outer ends of the yoke 20 by pivots 22 and the outermost ends of the links 21 are pivotally attached to cable-engaging dies 23 by means of pivots 24. The cable-engaging dies 23 are angularly shaped so as to accommodate cables from one-half to one and one-half inches in diameter. Still referring to FIGURE 2 of the drawings, it will be seen that the left hand end of the screw threaded rod 14 has an annular shoulder 25 engaged against the thrust bearing 15 while the right hand end or opposite end thereof has a secondary annular shoulder 26 engaged against a secondary thrust bearing 27 which in turn is positioned in the cap 12. It will be observed that the nut 13 is formed on an extension of the screw threaded rod 14 and extends outwardly through an aperture in the end of the cap 12. It will further be seen that the cap 12 is threaded onto a thread pattern formed on the outer surface of the elongated cylindrical body 10 and that the assembly of the cable-bending tool is thus held in assembled relation as shown.
In order to use the tool, the double bifurcated jaws 19 on the cap 18 are engaged on the cable C to be bent as seen in broken lines in FIGURE 1 of the drawings. The screw threaded rod 14 is revolved by imparting motion thereto by way of the nut 13 to move the yoke to the position shown in broken lines in FIGURE 1. The dies 23 are hooked over the cable at desired positions relative to the arms 19 and the screw threaded rod. 14 is revolved to move the yoke away from the jaws 19 whereupon the dies 23 will bend the cable over the die 19 to the desired degree. It will occur to those skilled in the art that the nut 19 and the screw threaded rod 14 which is secured thereto may be rotated manually by .a wrench engaged thereon or an adaptor fixed to an electric drill can be engaged thereon and a device operated rapidly thereby. In either event, the length of the portion of the cable being bent may be controlled by the initial positions of the dies 23 relative to the central die 19 and the degree of the bend may be controlled by the distance the yoke 20 is moved away from the die 19.
It will thus be seen that the cable bending tool meeting the several objects of the invention has been disclosed and having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
1. A cable bending tool comprising an elongated cylindrical body member, a cable engaging die positioned on one end of said body member and an apertured cap positioned on the other end, a screw threaded rod positioned in said cylindrical body member and journalled at its opposite end, a yoke threadably engaged on said screw threaded rod and having oppositely disposed portions extending outwardly of said cylindrical body member through oppositely disposed longitudinally extending slots therein, a pair of cable engaging members and links pivotally connecting said cable engaging members with said oppositely disposed portions of said yoke and means on said screw threaded rod exteriorly of said apertured cap for imparting rotating motion thereto so as to move said yoke and cable engaging members relative to said die on said elongated cylindrical body member.
2. The cable bending tool set forth in claim 1 and wherein said cable engaging die comprises a cap having a pair of oppositely disposed angular jaws extending outwardly therefrom.
3. The cable bending tool set forth in claim 1 and wherein said cable engaging members each include at least two an-g ularly related substantially planar portions. 4. The cable bending tool set forth in claim 1 and wherein said links are of lengths equal to at least onethird that of said cylindrical member.
